Chapter 78 "Approaching Exodus"

Chapter 78 "Approaching Exodus"

Dusk has arrived. Kevin, Demetri, and Isaiah have reached the edge of the forest. They see a small buffer zone of plains that separate the forest and the city.

Isaiah: Wow, there it is… I can’t believe it took us three days to get here...

Demetri: Yeah, it’s about damn time. We should have gotten here faster.

Kevin: We could have had I not needed to carry you for a good part of yesterday…

Demetri: Shut up! Just be happy I’m almost back at 100%!

Isaiah: Yeah, your balls aren’t as swollen anymore!

Demetri stares at Isaiah.

Demetri: Don’t talk about my balls, man...

Isaiah spots a team of two running into the city.

Isaiah: Look! Who are they?

Kevin: Can’t tell. They’re too far away.

Demetri: There are only two of them, so it’s a team that lost a member at some point.

Kevin: Maybe it’s that Sydney girl again.

Demetri and Isaiah are both sweating profusely.

Isaiah: Nah, I don’t think it is…

Demetri: Nope! Definitely not!

Kevin: *sighs* You guys have realized that she’ll castrate you the next time she sees you, huh?

Isaiah and Demetri: Yes!

Kevin: Well, at least you’re learning.

Kevin starts walking further into the forest and places their supply bag against a tree.

Demetri: What are you doing? We’ve gotta head towards the center!

Kevin: Going into that city at night would be stupid.

Demetri: What? Why! We just saw that team do it!

Kevin: In this forest, we only have to worry about the other teams, and most of them have probably suffered injuries of some kind. If we go into the city, we have to stay on the lookout for pros and if they find us… that’s it.

Demetri shuts up.

Isaiah: So it’s safer out here, you’re saying?

Kevin: Pretty much, and we’re in no rush, we’ve got the orbs we need to give us an excellent chance to pass the exam, and there are still two full days left. We can afford to play it safe.

Demetri: Pfft, whatever...

Isaiah and Demetri both walk over to Kevin.

Kevin: Alright, I’ll get a fire started. We can get a good night’s sleep and be well rested to hopefully finish out this exam tomorrow.

Isaiah: Right.

Demetri is in deep thought.

Isaiah: Is something wrong, Demetri?

Demetri: We only have a blue and a green orb… which means we’ll have to complete a challenge if we want to pass the exam.

Isaiah: Yeah... but we’ll get an easier one because we have an orb of each starting color!

Demetri: Easier by comparison. The challenge could still be tricky. It would probably be better to collect three white orbs before going straight to the center. That way-

Kevin: The more time we spend in the city, the higher the chance a teacher finds us and tries to take us out. We have an avenue to passing; we can’t get greedy.

Demetri: I’d rather fail because we were greedy than willingly walk into a losing scenario because we didn’t take a chance!

Kevin: The risks far out way the reward. The white orbs are a trap, remember? You should only collect them if you’re in a dire situation, and we’re not.

Demetri: We just need three of them! Do you really think this red orb challenge will be simpler than that?

Kevin: Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, but we won’t know if we never make it to the center, and there’s no guarantee that will happen if we follow your plan.

Demetri starts walking away in frustration.

Isaiah: Demetri, wait-

Demetri: I’ll take the first night watch shift!

Demetri storms off.

Isaiah: *sighs* Just when I thought we were starting to get along.

Kevin: He’ll be fine… he’s just worried.

Isaiah: I am too… if we fail that challenge… that’s it.

Kevin: There’s no reason to worry about that now. When the time comes, we’ll go in there and take care of business.

Kevin walks off to collect sticks for a fire.

Isaiah: (I hope so…)

Silver and Angel are steadily progressing through the forest towards the city. The tops of skyscrapers can be seen in the distance. Angel is carrying Alden.

Silver: It won’t be long now. If we hurry, we might be able to reach the center before midnight.

Angel: That’s a little ambitious, don’t you think? There’s no prize for first place. We shouldn’t push ourselves if we don’t have to.

Silver: The longer we take to finish this exam, the higher the risk we’ll be attacked and forced into a meaningless battle. Alden is basically useless right now, and although that isn’t much different from usual when you combine that with the fact that I used all of my silver dust to secure our second orb, it’s not a pretty situation. So time is of the essence for us.

Angel: I guess it makes sense when you put it like that.

Angel feels moisture on his back.

Angel: What the?

Alden is sweating profusely.

Angel: Jesus Alden! Get a grip!

Angel lowers Alden to the ground.

Angel: What’s wrong, man?

Alden: N- n- nothing is wrong!

Silver starts walking towards Alden.

Silver: That was the least convincing “nothing” I’ve ever heard. Tell us what’s wrong, now.

Alden: P- promise you won’t be mad?

Silver: No.

Alden looks down in defeat.

Alden: *under his breath* I lost our orb…

Silver: What did you say?

Angel: Speak up, Alden.

Alden: I LOST OUR ORB!

Silence.

Alden: Will one of you say something…

Angel: Jesus, Alden… how did you screw up that badly?

Alden: … maybe something nicer?

Silver forms a massive wrist blade of silver.

Silver: You waited until NOW to say something!

Alden: I- I’m sorry! I knew you’d be mad! I was afraid!

Silver winds back his arm.

Silver: Oh, I’ll make you afraid!

Angel grabs Silver’s arm.

Angel: Woah, dude, there’s no need to do that!

Silver: This idiot just made us waste valuable time and energy believing we had the orbs necessary to pass the exam when we didn’t! Do you realize how bad of a position we’re in now!

Angel: That doesn’t mean you should beat him into the dirt for it!

Silver: Yes! Yes, it does!

Silver turns to Alden.

Silver: How did you even lose it? It was shoved up your colon, for Christ’s sake!

Alden: I don’t know! It was there when Ash beat me, and I passed out... you don’t think… oh my god...

Angel: Alden… Ash is too innocent for that… plus how could she have known it was there in the first place?

Alden: Let a man dream!

Angel: That is one weird dream, man…

Silver: My question still hasn’t been answered! How did you lose-

Silver remembers the random splash of water during his fight with Justus.

Silver: The water…

Angel: Hm? What water?

Silver: Alden must have shit himself after losing to Ash.

Alden: Oh, come on!

Angel: That explains the smell…

Alden: You mean you knew!

Silver: The orb probably rolled off the cliff and fell into the gorge afterward. At that point, it landed in the river.

Angel: So it’s in the gorge then? There’s no way we can go back there and still have time to finish the exam.

Silver weighs his options.

Silver: Unfortunately, you’re right. That orb is gone.

Alden: Oh god! I did shit myself!

Angel: So what do we do? It’s almost sundown, and we only have one orb.

Alden: Aw, man! There’s shit smeared down my whole leg!

Silver: It’s too late to do anything now. Let’s set up camp and discuss our next action overnight.

Alden: This suit was a fucking rental!

Angel: Got it. I’ll collect some firewood.

Alden: My whole body was so numb from the beating that I didn’t even feel this! What the fuck, man!

Silver: Alright, I’ll prepare our rations for the night.

Alden: *cries*

Silver: Alden, clean yourself up!

Alden: It’s everywhere, man!

Silver: Then clean everywhere!

Alden: *cries louder*

Jace, Justus, and Ash have taken shelter under a large tree for the night.

Jace: Well, that was a pretty uneventful day…

Ash: Yeah, I can’t believe we didn’t see another team…

Jace: This is looking bad… we have only two days left, and I’m not confident that we’ll be able to get the orbs we need.

Ash: Don’t say that, Jace! Remember, we have to keep up the positive energy!

Jace just points to Justus, who has his back turned to them and looks completely dejected.

Ash: Well… that still applies to both of us!

Jace: Right… anyway… I’ll take the first shift of watch duty. I guess… try to cheer him up?

Ash: Alright…

Jace springs into the air. Ash turns to Justus.

Ash: (He’s been like this ever since his fight with Silver… I hope he’s alright.)

Ash approaches Justus.

Ash: Justus…

Justus doesn’t respond.

Ash: Uh… I’m sure you’ll get him next time!

Justus doesn’t respond.

Ash: Please say something...

Justus: Something.

Ash: Now you have a sense of humor?

Justus: Humor for what?

Ash stares at Justus blankly.

Ash: Are you doing okay?

Justus: I’m fine.

Ash: I- I’m sorry if I’m disturbing you…

Justus: You’re not. I just don’t feel like talking.

Ash: But you haven’t felt like that in two days…

Justus: I have a lot on my mind.

Ash: Like what happened with Silver?

Justus doesn’t respond. Ash clenches her fist.

Ash: Why are you so upset about losing one battle! You’re still stronger than most of our class! I wish I was as strong as you... maybe then I wouldn’t have had to forfeit to Kevin...

Justus looks over his shoulder at Ash.

Justus: I thought you didn’t regret your decision to withdraw from the tournament.

Ash: I don’t… but I… I guess… I just want to know what it’s like to be as strong as you.

This catches Justus’ attention.

Ash: From the moment school started, a handful of you guys were just… were stronger than everybody else. There was a pretty clear hierarchy established from that point. Everybody else looked weak by comparison.

Justus: What makes you bring this up?

Ash: Jace lost to Angel… handly. Angel’s really strong, but I don’t think about that because you guys… are just stronger.

Justus looks away.

Ash: I look up to you guys in many ways. I hope to one day be as strong as all of you. And I know Jace, Angel, Karma, Zach, Blair, et cetera… they all feel the same way, but most of us have fought against at least one of you and have been completely dominated.

Justus flashes back to his fights against Karma and Angel from the Sports Festival. He recalls Blair’s fight against Silver, Jace’s fight against Kevin, and Zach’s fight against Aaron.

Ash: We all work extremely hard, but it never feels like we’ll be able to reach that level. So… I… I guess it just makes me upset to see you like this, you lost, but you’re still way stronger than I’ll ever be… and it makes me feel... useless.

Ash and Justus are silent for a few moments.

Ash: I’m sorry… I shouldn’t make this about me.

Justus: It’s okay, I understand.

Ash: You… you do?

Justus: My father’s success makes me feel inadequate.

Ash: Oh… I- I- I’m sorry, I didn’t mean-

Justus: Ash, it’s alright, let me finish.

Ash: Oh- okay.

Justus: I lost to Silver, but I’m not distraught because of that.

Ash: Then why are you so sad?

Justus: Because he beat me at my own game, he overpowered me. Not even Kevin was able to do that.

Ash remembers Justus’ fight with Kevin.

Justus: It’s not about the loss… it’s about what the loss means. I need to integrate more moves into my repertoire, change my strategy, and find a way to progress. That’s what a fight between rivals means; it doesn’t determine who is stronger definitively… it indicates to the winner that they’re moving in the right direction, and it demonstrates to the loser they’re going in the wrong direction.

Ash: I… I think I get it. You’ve been quiet cause you’re trying to figure out what you can do to get better… so that you can win next time you fight Silver.

Justus: Precisely.

Ash: But… but what does that have to do with-

Justus: Hard work isn’t the only thing that makes you stronger; you have to have direction. If you’re just trying to get strong by doing the same things repeatedly, eventually, you’re going to hit a wall. You have to adapt, learn new things, and evolve as time goes on. One person did that, the one that changed the way he’s perceived more than anybody else: Hayze.

Ash: Yeah… watching him beat Silver was...

Justus: Unbelievable.

Ash looks down at her hands and clenches them.

Ash: I understand, Justus; if I want to get stronger, I need to change things up!

Justus cracks a small smile.

Justus: (Me too, Ash… me too.)

Inside the city, Zach, Karma, and Alexis are hiding in an alleyway.

Karma: This is pretty nerve-wracking.

Zach: Should we really be trying to get these orbs at night? If a teacher spots us, it’s over.

Alexis looks serious.

Alexis: We can’t waste time. We haven’t seen another team yet, so there’s a chance we’re the only ones who made it here today. Tomorrow will be different. Nearly every other team could be here; we need to at least secure one or two orbs tonight, or else getting here early was for nothing.

Karma: She’s right, this city isn’t big enough for all 14 teams to be moving independently without running into each other, and we’re bound to not be the only team trying to collect ten white orbs to pass.

Alexis: With 14 orbs in total to start, at max, only seven teams can pass with two originals.

Zach: And the other seven teams will have to try and get white orbs…

Alexis: Exactly, but remember I said: “at max.”

Zach: So these next two days will be a white orb scavenger hunt…

Karma: Yeah…. So any advantage we can get is for the best.

Zach: Alright, I’m picking up what you guys are putting down.

Alexis nods. The three peak out of the alleyway into the street where a machine containing 10 white orbs is sitting.

Zach: So there are 10 of these things scattered randomly around the city?

Karma: By the looks of it, yes.

Alexis: We can only take one orb from a machine. It appears the orbs are labeled, so everyone will know if you’ve been it or not.

Zach: Damn, and I bet they’re all out in the open like this too!

Karma: Yes, and once we take an orb, the pros will be alerted of our presence and be on much higher guard.

Zach: Well, at least we can get this one and-

Alexis notices something.

Alexis: Get down!

Alexis, Zach, and Karma duck into the alley. A few seconds later, Colossus touches down in the street.

Zach: /Is that Colossus!/

Karma and Alexis both shush Zach.

Zach: /Sorry./

Colossus quickly scans the street and looks back at the orb machine.

Colossus: (Walker said that students could reach the city as early as day 3, but I haven’t seen anyone, and all of the machines are untouched hm… no matter, I’ll resume my rounds.)

Colossus leaps off. The three exhale in relief.

Zach: He would have been the worst person for us to fight…

Karma: I know. It’s a good thing Alexis noticed him in time.

Alexis watches as Colossus gets farther and farther away.

Alexis: (Now is our chance!) Are you ready, Karma?

Karma: As ready as I can be.

Zach: You got this!

Alexis helps Karma to the street. Then, she uses her quirk to accelerate herself to the machine as quickly as possible.

Karma: (Alright! I just need to get the orb and run!)

Karma finds the orb marked for her team and takes it out of the machine.

Karma: (Got it! Now time to-)

An alarm built inside the machine starts blaring at an ear-splitting volume.

Karma: Oh crap!

Alexis: Karma! Run!

Colossus hears the alarm in the distance.

Colossus: Looks like the fun has begun!

Colossus begins leaping back in the direction of the machine.

Colossus: (Even with these restraints, I have to be careful. These kids aren’t going to be at 100% at this point in the exam, I could seriously hurt them..)

Alexis runs to Karma and aids her back to the alleyway.

Karma: Sorry, I should have been more careful and checked for traps.

Alexis: It’s okay. What’s done is done; we can’t worry about that right now.

The sound of Colossus returning can be heard in the distance.

Zach: Oh man! This is bad!

Alexis looks at Karma and Zach’s injuries.

Alexis: (In our condition, there’s no way we can escape Colossus…)

Alexis looks panicked.

Alexis: We might have just failed this exam on a stupid mistake... (Aaron, I’m sorry.)

Karma: Alexis, hold this.

Alexis: Huh?

Karma: Take the orb!

Alexis grabs the orb from Karma’s hand.

Zach: What are we going to do? Colossus will be here any second now!

Karma: We need to get out of here at any cost!

Karma places her hands on Zach and Alexis’ shoulders.

Karma: I will use my ultimate move to get us out of here. Buckle up!

Alexis: Huh?

Zach: Wait, what-

Karma: Slipstream Acceleration!

Time flashes before Zach, Karma, and Alexis’ eyes.

Zach: What the hell is going on!

Alexis: It’s like we’re watching a movie in fast forward!

Suddenly the three are in a building 20 blocks away from where they were before.

Alexis: Did we just teleport?

Zach pukes.

Zach: *groans* Warn us next time, Karma…

Karma doesn’t respond.

Zach: Karma?

Karma isn’t moving.

Alexis: Karma! Are you alright?

Zach: She looks frozen...

Alexis gets a look of realization.

Alexis: This must be the side effects of whatever she did.

Zach: What? What do you mean?

Alexis: Remember what she said on the first day of school?

“ Karma: I'm Karma Montgomery, my quirk lets me travel back in time 3 seconds or forward in time by 3 seconds, but if I overuse my quirk, I’ll become frozen in time and unable to move for a couple of minutes. “ - Chapter 6

Zach: So... this was her overusing her quirk to get us away from Colossus quickly?

Alexis: I think so.

Zach: Well, it was pretty effective.

Alexis looks at the white orb Karma retrieved.

Alexis: So… this is what it took for us to collect a single white orb... we nearly failed.

Zach: It did seem like it was too easy… they knew we would just wait for a teacher to finish patrolling and then go for the orb.

Alexis: Yeah, and assuming the distance between each machine isn’t uniform, we have no way of being able to know when a teacher will be far enough away. It’s going to be tricky to collect nine more of these...

Zach: I think we’re up to it! We’ll get better at it as time goes on!

Alexis: Yeah… we just need to come up with a plan...

Hayze, Eve, and Jake are staring at the city on top of a hill.

Hayze: Tomorrow we will reach the city.

Eve: Oh joy, I’m sure that will go as well as the rest of our endeavors have.

Jake: *mocking* My name is Eve. I hate everything!

Eve punches Jake.

Jake: Worth it…

Eve punches Jake again.

Jake: *groans* Okay… that one wasn’t.

Eve: Good answer.

Hayze notices something in the distance.

Hayze: Hey guys, do you see that?

Eve and Jake both look and see a dying forest fire with a trail of burnt trees in its wake.

Eve: *sighs*

Jake: I guess Blair is nearby.

Hayze: That’s not good…

Eve: Why? I thought you liked Blair?

Hayze: Blair isn’t the one I’m worried about…

Eve thinks for a moment.

Eve: You know…

Hayze: You know what?

Jake: Nothing!

Eve punches Jake again.

Jake: Alright… I’ll stop.

Eve: As far as I know, Blair, Saige, and Wes are on good terms with all of us. We could potentially try to team up.

Hayze: Hm…

Eve: What’s that “hm” for? I thought you and Saige were friends?

Hayze: “Friends” means a different thing in Saige’s world…

Eve: Just man up! What’s the worst she’s going to do to you?

Hayze: I’m not the one I’m worried about…

Eve: Jake?

Hayze stares at Eve.

Eve: Me? I can handle Saige!

Hayze: You’re uh… never mind, let’s do it.

Eve: Glad you see it my way!

Eve grabs Jake by the neck and points him in the direction of the forest fire.

Jake: *choking*

Eve: Teleport us there!

Hayze: You could have just asked him to-

Eve: Just grab on!

Hayze: Alright…

Hayze places his hand on Jake’s arm. Jake teleports them to the burnt remains of the forest.

Hayze: This was definitely Blair’s doing…

Eve chucks Jake aside.

Jake: *gasps for air*

Eve: Well, I guess we’ll have to split up to find-

Saige: *off-screen* Hayzey!

Hayze: You were saying?

Eve: Shut up.

Saige emerges from the trees and approaches Hayze, Eve, and Jake.

Saige: Hayzey! I missed you!

Hayze: The feeling isn’t mutual…

Saige: Liar!

Eve: Saige, what the hell happened here?

Saige: Oh, Blair had an accident.

Hayze: Saige…

Saige: Oh, alright! Blair and Wes got into a fight with another team and defeated them, but it was… costly.

Hayze: How “costly”?

Saige: Follow me.

The three follow Saige as she leads them away from the burnt trees.

Saige: Wes was removed from the exam during his fight with Bruno, we’re not sure what happened exactly, but he’s gone.

Hayze: Damn...

Eve: Not surprising.

Jake: Called it.

Hayze looks back at Jake and Eve.

Hayze: Anyway, so I assume that you were able to get Bruno’s orb.

Saige: Yup, that plus our other green orb means we’re all set to pass this exam.

Eve: Wait, “other green orb”? So you beat another 1-B team as well?

Saige: Yes indeed! We took them down on day 1.

Hayze: You guys have done pretty well for yourselves, minus the whole Will thing.

Saige: Eh, I’m sure he’s okay. So, how many orbs do you guys have?

Hayze: Uh…

Eve: None.

Saige stops.

Saige: None?

Saige turns around and looks upset with Hayze.

Saige: What have you guys been doing these last three days!

Eve: Tell her how we lost our orb, Hayze. I’m sure she’ll love to hear that.

Saige stares at Hayze with a pouty face.

Hayze: I smashed it…

Saige: You did what!

Hayze: It was so another team wouldn’t get it! Don’t worry, we’ll be fine-

Saige: You better be!

Saige storms off.

Hayze: Is… is she mad at me?

Eve: God, you’re bad at this…

Eve follows Saige, and Hayze turns to Jake.

Hayze: Do you…

Jake: Nope.

Night has arrived. Killian and Gavin approach the center building of the city.

Killian: Yahoo! We made it before the end of the third day!

Gavin: Yeah, very Gucci!

Killian: Now, let’s pass this exam!

Killian and Gavin enter the building. It looks like the lobby of a hotel with three elevators lining the wall.

Killian: Well, this is interesting… not what I was expecting.

Gavin: Yeah! Yeah!

A portal opens, and Walker steps out.

Walker: Welcome to the end of the Final Exam. Now that you have stepped foot in this building, you’ve officially locked in your orbs. Present them to me.

Killian takes off their supply bag, opens it up, and takes out their two green orbs. Walker takes them and verifies their authenticity.

Walker: You have two green orbs. Congratulations, you have passed the practical portion of the final exam.

Killian: Yes!

Gavin: Yeah, sauce!

Walker: You may now take the elevator in the middle. It’ll take you to the lounge, you’ll stay there until the exam finishes, there’s catering, showers, fresh pairs of clothes and your own private rooms, again congratulations.

Walker turns to leave through his portal.

Killian: Wait! Mr. Walker!

Walker: Yes?

Killian: Is Whitney alright?

Walker stares at Killian for a moment.

Walker: She’s fine, but she needs rest. The eliminated students are being treated on a separate floor of this building because you’ve passed the exam. You can visit her if you’d like.

Killian: Okay, thank you.

Gavin: Yeah! Yeah!

Walker leaves through his portal, and he reemerges in the control room with Houston.

Walker: I didn’t expect anyone to finish by day 3.

Houston: Well, then you underestimated my students! I’m not surprised at all that Killian and Gavin passed already!

Walker takes his seat and looks up at the monitors.

Walker: (At this rate, it’s becoming clear that not everyone from my class will pass, but the question is… who?)

Saige, Eve, Hayze, and Jake reach Saige’s campsite, where they see Blair is laid out on the ground wounded.

Eve: Blair!

Hayze: Oh my god…

Saige: She got it bad against Talon and Ester.

Blair is very pale and barely conscious. Eve kneels down next to her.

Eve: Blair, are you okay?

Blair doesn’t respond. Saige walks over.

Saige: I extracted the claws that created the initial wound and stitched her up, but she’s lost a lot of blood.

Eve: So what do we do? If she stays like this, Mr. Walker will have to pull her from the exam soon.

Saige: Well, that’s why I came looking for you guys.

Eve: Wait, what do you mean, “came looking”?

Saige: I can use my quirk to create the supplies for a blood transfusion. I just need blood.

Eve: Don’t ignore my question! What did you mean by that?

Saige: I saw you guys earlier today when I was on top of that hill over there, I figured you’d climb it for the same reasons I did, then head over here once you saw the forest fire, or I guess former forest fire.

Eve and Hayze stare at Saige.

Saige: Tee hee!

Hayze: *sighs* Whatever... do we know Blair’s blood type?

Saige: B positive, haha, ironic.

Eve: Damn, I’m A negative.

Saige: What about you, Hayze?

Hayze: I’m O positive.

Saige: Okay, that’ll work. O positive can donate to any other positive.

Blair: Hayze…

Everyone looks at Blair.

Eve: Blair, you should save your strength.

Blair: Hayze… come here…

Eve moves over, and Hayze kneels down next to Blair.

Hayze: What is it, Blair?

Blair: I… I never…

Hayze: Huh? Never what?

Blair: I never thanked you… for saving me… back in the forest.

Hayze realizes Blair’s referring to when he rescued her from Ivy.

Hayze: Oh… that’s okay. You don’t need to thank me for that.

Blair: I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you… so yes… yes, I do…

Hayze looks concerned for Blair.

Blair: I’m sorry for taking so long to say something… but now you’re here to “save” me again… it just reminded me of back then… you stood up to the girl that killed Mr. EMD… for me… and I didn’t even bother to thank you...

Hayze smiles.

Hayze: Don’t worry about it, Blair. I would have done it for anybody.

Blair looks away. Eve smacks Hayze in the back of the head.

Hayze: WHAT WAS THAT FOR!

Eve: YOU SHOULD KNOW WHY!

Saige: Alright, let’s get this transfusion underway…

Elsewhere in the forest, a large campfire crackles.

Sydney: Well… we have two more days left… and we don’t have an orb.

Sydney and Desiree are with Hailey, Verity, and Fabio.

Sydney: We all lost to 1-A teams… as embarrassing as that is, we all have a common goal now.

Talon and Ester are also among them.

Talon: We have zero orbs between the seven of us. We’re all destined to fail this exam.

Hailey: But if we work together, we can crush those 1-A students!

Sydney: We may not all pass, but if we’re going down…

Sydney takes two sticks with the names “Isaiah” and “Demetri” carved in them and throws them in the fire.

Sydney: We’re taking as many of them down with us as possible.
