The rain continued to beatdown on Thabo. Each drop was a reminder of how dire his situation was. He had one point left and this turn would prove his last. He looked back. The white brilliant light that represented his life was now no more than a dot in the distance, a dot getting smaller with each passing moment.
He reached for his deck, his hand stopped of drawing. It trembled in the heavy rain. He squeezed into a fist and withdrew.
The Ferryman tilted his head in confusion. The green magic fire that formed his eyes not dimming in the heavy rain. “What is wrong?”
“I have 1 Life Point left.” He said. “I’m going to lose.”
“Most likely.” The Ferryman said. “But it is the nature of every game. Good thing we’re doing this for fun, hey?”
Thabo looked at his feet. The water was pooling in the boat as it slowly sunk into the black sea. He looked back at the light, that was now flickering in the heavy rain.
“What’s the point of me playing if I’m just going to lose?” he said more to himself.
“Don’t lose hope.”
Thabo looked up. The Ferryman continued looking at him expectantly.
“Don’t lose hope.” Thabo heard the voice again. He looked at the cards in his hand. He saw Robo Girl wave and say, “Don’t lose hope. Believe in yourself. Believe in me and we will change fate itself.”
Thabo nodded. There was still a life he had to go back to and he did not want to give up now. I draw!
He felt as if he had no body. Floating near the ceiling of a hospital room. Looking down, he could see himself, lying on a bed, face swollen and hooked up to a few machines. The girl he would see in his visions was sitting next to him, sleeping on his hand.
He was suddenly pulled back onto the boat. Looking at the card in his hand, he smiled.

“For 2 Aura, I activate Life Line! I can only activate this card when my opponent has double or more Life Points than me and while I also have no Unit Creatures on the field. It allows me to draw one card and one additional card for every Unit on your side of the field.”
“Uh, I have Grim King and Imp of Black Claw, so you draw 3 in total.”
Thabo nodded. “I draw 3. First one!”
When he drew, Thabo saw his parents. His father was pacing around the hospital room, his mother was on her knees praying. He could sense them wishing that he would return. He looked at the card in his hand. It was a card called ‘Cost Up’. But with this card, Thabo knew exactly what was in his deck. He knew exactly who he was and wanted more than anything. To go back to the people who loved him.
He knew the deck his soul built and knew that there was one card… one card that could save him and ensure he won and went back to his loved ones.
“I draw, again!”
Now he saw his friends and other family members, each visiting him, each wishing him well. He knew all their names, knew what they meant to him and each one made his drive and determination to win stronger.
He was back on the boat, he looked at the card in his hand. This one was called Exchange of Fortunes. This card would help but it was not the card that would turn this whole game around.
“Searching for answers?” The Ferryman said.
“I have my answers and I will draw them. Now for the final time,” Thabo’s hand rested atop the deck. “I draw!”
He had another vision. A vision of his whole life flashing before him and everything that had happened that led up to him being here, in the Between. He saw other visions, visions of him growing old with the woman he loved, he saw the birth of his first child, he saw himself growing old. When he came back to the Between, he had even more hope that he could defeat Fate and survive this game in the Between. He just needed the card in his hand to be the card he needed.
He looked at the card in his hand. It was one of the few things he could see clearly in the pouring rain. He slowly turned it around to see if it would be the card he needed, if it would be the card that would save him…
