A Game In The Between
Black Imp of Claw

Black Imp of Claw

The Ferryman studied his hand for a moment, unbothered by the rain pouring down over him and Thabo and by the high swells of the black sea. Its bony mouth twisted into a grin. “I think I know what I will do.”

Thabo was in such pain that he could not fully focus on what the robed skeleton was saying.

“I change two of my Treasure Tokens into Auras!” The being said as 2 Treasure Tokens went from brilliant gold to glowing blue. “This will allow me to play, Soul Transplant! This allows me to discard a Unit Creature with an effect. Then I can give that effect to a Unit I control on the field.”

“Wait,” Thabo said, weakly, “Your Grim King is going to get stronger by getting an ability?”

“Exactly. I discard Sap Battery Man!” The card in the Ferryman’s hand turned into a purple orb of light. It then fused into Grim King, giving the empty black sockets of the skeleton Unit Creature a feint purple glow. “Now, if I pay 1, I get to return one Inert Token Treasure to the Treasure Pile!”

Thabo looked on in surprise. “You’ve added 2 Treasure Tokens into the Pile? You can damage me for 2.”

“Only if I don’t summon another Unit Creature.” The Ferryman’s smile grew more horrifying as the flashes of purple lightning in the darkness above them flashed. “A good thing I am summoning another Unit. I summon, Black Imp of Claw!”

A section of the downpour of rain suddenly twisted and combined until it formed a sphere of water. There was an inhumane shout emanating from the sphere of the water. The sphere rippled and exploded, the scream of the Unit Creature inside becoming louder. Black Imp of Claw was a short creature wearing a dirty tuxedo, which curved over its hunched back. It had sickly yellow eyes that glowed eerily and claws at the end of its hands that were almost as large as its tiny body.

“That’s a misplay,” Thabo managed to fight the pain he felt and crack a smile. “Even though it’s a Value 1, that now means you can only hit me with a total of 2 damage.”

“Ah but Black Imp of Claw has an ability that may remedy that.”

Thabo frowned. “What? What is its effect?”

“How about I show you. Black Imp of Claw, attack!”

The creature leapt for Thabo and slashed its claws at him. Thabo screamed as he was thrown back on his butt.

His Life Points dropped to 5.

“Now,” the being with glowing balls of green flames for eyes began, “if my Black Imp of Claw attacks you directly, I can pay 1 Treasure Token,” as he said this, one of the being’s Treasure Tokens returned to the Treasure Pile, “and I can force you to return 2 Treasure Tokens.”

“No,” Thabo said as he lost 2 treasure Tokens. He breathed easier as he now had less Treasure Tokens causing him pain. “He was now strong enough to sit up. “Wait, if I lost 2 and you paid one, that means…”

“Yes, with 4 Treasure Tokens in the Treasure Pile, you will now take 4 damage. Grim King, attack!”

Grim King rose to his feet again, striking an intimidating figure in the now chaotic word of The Between. It grabbed its scythe and flew towards Thabo, slashing at him. There were numerous flashes of purple lightning overhead and a scream erupted from Thabo the moment the scythe made contact and his Life Points dropped to 1.

“You are now down to 1 Life Points. This turn will be your last!”
