18. First time speaking in another language.

Four days had passed while I was reading that book about Magic and was understanding more about the language. I could finally speak this kingdom's language, although it was still pretty hard to pronounce the words.... I had Chloe hunt for food during these days, and Arci searched for sources of water. Apparently,

he found a river stream just 300 meters from where we were. I also made 2 pieces of furniture. A wooden

table and a simple chair.

I was currently outside the house, practicing magic.

(Cmon... Cmon... Distort!)

A small space of reality was distorted above my palms. I was practicing Spatial Magic.

(Okay... Im getting better... I just have to increase the size...)

I was able to distort space since yesterday. I was so excited that day. I was currently learning Spatial

Magic at dawn, and Starlight Magic at night.

(Cmon, maintain it...)

The distortion in reality was getting bigger. I then started to move it around. It was moving slowly, as if it was

a firefly... The size of it wasn't that big, it was only the size of tip of your finger... I was manipulating

manacules to create a distortion in space using my mana.... It felt exhausting.

At one point, the distortion just disappeared, and I collapsed. It seems like I ran out of mana... Damnit.

(Status.)

I check my status screen.

My stats had increased slightly. However my intelligence stat increased from 143, to 173. A 30 point increase. I was still level 1... How do you level up? Also my HP and MP increased... I understand MP but why HP?

"How is your progress Ryan?"

"It's going pretty well... I think it changed from the size of a pinball to a tip of a pinkie finger."

"That's quite the good news. Can you stand up?"

"No, not at all."

It seems like this status effect is called 'Mana Deficiency'. After exhausting your mana, you weren't really able to move... However I heard that mages could get used to it. I waited until my body had enough mana to move. After sensing that my muscles were coming back alive, I stood up. I then took a drink from the wooden cup that I made. River water was refreshing.

Today, I decided that I was going to the town. I was going to register to the Adventurer's Guild and earn some money. Arci would stay back home, and Chloe would follow me until the forest edge.

Why was I going with Chloe? Well, even though I killed a goblin, I was still painfully weak... I decided to have Chloe follow me to deter any monsters on the way

I was a bit nervous... This would be my first time going there with nobody. I was going to go there alone, and I wasn't too fluent in the language at all. I hope nobody there thinks I'm a weirdo or something.

"Have a safe trip, Ryan."

"Yeah. Make sure you lead any monsters away from the house."

I left. I was walking ona forest path with Chloe. I took a look at my surroundings. The trees were swaying,

bird were chirping... I could hear all sorts of wildlife. The rays of the sun brightened up the forest, turning it into a splenderous, marvelous sight. It was really nice taking a walk with this view. It was relaxing.

After walking for about 20 minutes, I could finally see the edge of the forest. I could see the town in the

distance.

"Chloe. You have to wait here okay?" I said as I ruffled Chloe's head.

"Woof!"

It seems like Chloe understood what I said, and decided to sit there. I took a walk toward the forest edge.

I was nervous... I hope I'll be fine.

*Step*

*Step*

*Step*

The leaves on the ground rustled as I stepped on them, I was nearing the forest edge... And right at the

line between the forest and grass... I stopped. I lift my hand, allowing the light on the other side to shine

down my palm... It felt warm.

I then took another step. I was out of the forest, I took a look behind me. I could not see Chloe, probably because he blended in so well with the foliage. After looking behind me for a couple of seconds, I decided to walk forward. I was finally about to talk with the people.

(Finally... I'll be able to talk to normal people...)

I wasn't too smooth with this kingdom's language. I practiced with Arci, but I was still not too confident.

(Alright... Dont be scared, its not like anything scary will happen)

I kept walking towards the town walls, for the first time they looked really big... However, when I was about to enter, I was stopped by the town guards.

"Halt! Stop right there, suspicious person!"

(Uweh? What? Why am I being stopped? Wait... Of course they would stop some random guy coming out of the forest!)

"Uh, uh, What be problem?" I awkwardly talked broken sentences.

(Shit! I messed up! Now they're going to be more suspicious of me!)

"...Are you the one named Ryan?"

"Eh? Yes, right. I-, I'm named Ryan."

"Ah... Seems like that way of speaking does make it you. A higher up told me to allow you passage... Are you sure you'll be fine with that way of speaking, lad?"

"Ehm, yes. I be fine..."

"Ahahahaha! No need to be so tense... Go ahead, this town is well receptive to strangers, as long as you aren't from Silvatica of course."

It seems like Dain did a couple of things to allow me passage... I guess that's one thing to be grateful for.

"T-thank you..."

I thanked the guard with a wavering tone... Damnit, I was making a fool out of myself here... Who would thought talking to strangers would be so hard?

I walked inside the town, and I was immediately barraged with a plethora of information... Last time I was here, I couldn't understand anything they were saying. However, now i could... The town felt much more

alive than last time, I could hear children playing, people bargaining, mothers buying vegetables...

However, I was hit with a realization.

(Shit! I don't know where the Adventurer's Guild is... Should I ask people??? But its so embarrassing..."

Yes, I didn't know where the Adventurer's Guild was. I had to ask for directions from people.

(Alright, deep breaths...)

I walked toward an adult male behind a stall, he was selling vegetables.

"Hello there! Are you here to buy vegetables? It's just 10 dori for one cabbage, one small bronze coin!"

"Erm, no... Do you know where Adventerur's Guild is?" Aaaah! I messed up the spelling!!! So embarrassing!

"Why are you talking like that? Are you perhaps a foreigner?"

"Yes... T-this is fi- My first time being in this town..."

"Aaah, I see... Well if your looking for the Adventurer's Guild, you simply have to stay on this road, turn right,

and then stick onto that road. After arriving at an intersection, simply turn right and then turn left. After

walking for a couple of minutes on that road, you should see the Guild. Are you perhaps going to sign up?"

"Um. Yes."

"No need to be so tense. Well, if your going to sign up, just be careful with the requests okay? Many young men near your age choose goblin subjugation as their first commission. Most never returned. Dont underestimate goblins young man, choose the ones about picking herbs or deliveries first... And maybe after a couple of requests, try joining a party. That will set you straight on the adventuring life. Just remember not to take any hard commissions on your own."

(Yep, seeing how goblins are able to fight like that, no wonder they didn't return.)

I took the adult man's words to heart. I then thanked him for helping me with the directions, he warmly smiled and told me to buy from his store next time.
