Chapter 5: Ahead of the game

Pov: Momo

Back to just before the opening of the portals.

It was just another dull day in English class For Momo. Coach Hales was droning on about how he had to write an entire essay on the red wheelbarrow poem.

The were a few things occupying Momo's mind. The first was her worry for Trish, who had come to school Monday with bruises and burns all over her stomach and arms. She wore a sweater and pants to cover the evidence even though it was sweltering outside.

The abuse had been getting worse every day, and today, her thighs, arms, and stomach had cigarette burns all over them, and her stomach was the color of a plum. Seemingly her mom didn't even care if Trish lived through the experience this time.

'Is she even going to live to see another day? I need to get her out of there.' Her eyes narrowed to slits, her thoughts turning dark. 'I'm going to kill that woman, I fucking swear it.'

Trish feels trapped because every time she runs away, the cops always bring her back hours to days later. They never listened to her or Momo.

The second thing on her mind was James and the insane things he now seemed capable of. He texted everyone after the game. Letting them know he is somehow able to deadlift double the world record, run 10 miles in 8 minutes, and he has yet to dare to test his striking strength.

The final thing on her mind is the foreboding she has had for weeks. As if something has been biding its time to do something awful.

Interrupting her thoughts. Everyone in their minds suddenly heard, "Congratulations. Your universe has been selected for the unification of worlds''.

Except for Momo, who heard something else entirely. A deep sultry voice spoke, dripping with sex. "What are you doing here? This doesn't make any sense. You shouldn't even exist anymore.

While the voice continued speaking, one card appeared in her vision. On it was a woman that looked a lot like Momo holding a ball in her right hand that was a mix of light and dark magic, and on her left, she held a giant ax, and it read.

The heroine of Duality: Only one Heroine of Duality can exist simultaneously. She walks the line of both light and darkness. A contradictory existence that defies reason.

Black and white light exploded out from her body. Her Dress burned away in a heatless white fire only to be replaced by a black hoodie and trap pants. Most of the light then recombined into a Breastplate and Chainmail Greeves.

The breastplate looked modern in design, but its color was highly different. It was half black and half white split vertically, both colors combined in the middle to create a colossal yin-yang symbol over her belly. The Chainmail Greaves had interlocking black and white links.

The last bit of light transformed into a substantial 2.5-meter ax that appeared in her hands. Its haft was abyssal black, covered in red demonic magic symbols. The blade was Ivory white with intricate golden angelic magic designs.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

The list of skills she unlocked kept droning on; the rest were D rank or lower.

Her eyes felt like they were on fire, and now her left eye iris turned red, the whites of her eye were dyed black like ink, and her left eye's iris went gold.

A loud ripping sound reverberated around the classroom. Three-foot Green Bipedal frog creatures started stepping through the portal. In just 5 seconds, three dozen of them were in the classroom, and more were following every second.

Momo's Demon eye showed her the creature was a D-rank monster called Kaejin, a bipedal frog monster whose intelligence was on par with humans but had a strong bloodlust. Readying her ax, she shouted a battle cry, and then a blood bath ensued.

Fifteen minutes later, her classmates were either dead or dragged through the Portal, and dozens of Kaejin surrounded her. Lifting her ax once again, she swings with all her might like it's a baseball bat and cleaves through three more.

Activating her Dark magic, a black ball appeared in her right hand; pointing at the ones to her left, she screamed, "Shadow Lances." Five Obsidian lances shoot from her hand and stab into the shadows of the Kaejin, killing them instantly.

Spinning in a circle with her ax outstretched, she becomes a whirlwind of blood and gore.

While also spamming the shadow lances, they kept stabbing into the shadows of the creatures, killing them.

For every three she killed, five more joined the fray. She was slowly overwhelmed. All her skills, though very effective against these numbers, were practically useless.

Ten minutes after being surrounded, Momo was unconscious and dragged into the portal. Having killed 200 Kaejin, the floor was filled with at least 2 feet of blood.

Hours later, she regained consciousness, pain coursing through her body. Water washed over her face as she was dragged through a shallow river.

Looking straight up at the sky, she saw six suns instead of one. 'Dorothy, You're not in Kansas anymore,' the line flashed through her mind.

Her ax reappeared in her left hand, and she swung it at the creature dragging her. Completely bisecting it, blood shooting out like a broken hydrant. The Kaejin make a loud croaking sound alerting all of its kind nearby.

For dozens of miles around, the croak could be heard. Except in one area, which was currently being shaken apart by a massive creature walking in the forest. Hundreds answered the call, all rushing toward the origins of the croak.

Fighting off wave after wave of them, the river was stained red with blood. She had learned her lesson last time. She made sure not to get surrounded, using her magic to keep the ones behind her at bay as she decimated the ones in front of her with her ax.

After two hours of endless fighting, her body was in near-perfect condition, with her Hp, Stam, and Mp regenerating to nearly full in mere seconds. Mental fatigue was piling on with every kill, causing her to slow down unconsciously.

Their stats blackened her heart, and a lump formed in her throat. These monsters were more robust than the one that nearly killed her and did Kill Cedric; hundreds of them were there.

Almost as if she was on autopilot, she selected Chaos Bolt with auto cast selected. Just trying everything she could to give Momo even a chance at life.

But Trish was too focused on Momo and didn't notice the creature Sneaking up on her, quietly swimming in the water with its blade outstretched. It then jumped out of the water, Swinging its blade towards her neck.

In the milliseconds before it hit her. She saw Momo fling these spears of black Shadows toward her, but she was over 500 meters away, and they were not fast enough.

The last thing Trish heard was her best friend screaming, "No!!!" Then she felt a sharp stinging pain in her neck, and her vision did a 360. The last thing she saw was the black spears closing in on her just a few meters away and the sight of Momo being taken over by a pure black aura.

Then Trish's vision stopped completely, darkness overtaking her. The last thing she saw in her mind was a massive maw with pitch-black teeth darker than darkness grinning.
