El pulls a cart out of the barn and heads to the fields. He loads it up with straw before heading back to the cattle, distributing food, checking on the animals, and walking the perimeter fence. It doesn’t take too long. A few of the cattle reach the ends of their terms. They’re pregnant and it was going to be El’s job to help them deliver.

The teen marks each cow that's pregnant with a collar. El hammers a post down and fixes up the fence’s perimeter before turning back towards the barn. A flash of light draws his attention towards the sky. He looks up to see a small ball of flame crash down through the roof of the barn.

El’s eyes go wide as his feet start carrying him forward before the rest of his body has time to process what happened. He reaches the barn doors and stops staring into the room. Laying on a pile of straw is a man.
The man appears to have fiery red hair and shiny black eyes. He’s muscular, a moving statue of manly physique. He wears a chain skirt, leather sandals, and has a belt across his chest.
The boy rushes forward to check the man for injuries or burns. But he seems almost unscathed. His eyes slowly open as he groggily looks around.
“Ugh,” the man holds a hand to his head, “be useful and get me a drink.” The man crashes his head back down in the straw.
“Yessir.” El replies.
The boy runs off to the well, fetching a bucket of water, and returns with it. He sets it down next to the stranger from the sky. The man opens one eye and takes a look at the bucket.
“I meant a stiff drink.”
“I’ll get you that as soon as you tell me your name,” El says, with a hand near his sickle.
“You wouldn’t be able to touch me, let alone take me kid. I am Bandlor, the God of War.”
“Right, because a God would crash down into my barn.” El raises an eyebrow. “How can I trust you?”
“You can’t. My powers were taken from me and I was cast out.” Bandlor looks at the bucket of water.
“I have a mug in here somewhere.” El turns and climbs up into the rafters where his bed is.
"New world, same shit." Bandlor mutters.
The boy retrieves a tin mug and climbs back down with it. Handing it to Bandlor, the God-man uses it to scoop some water for himself.
"What did you say?" El looks to Bandlor with bright eyes.
"How old are you? Bandlor grunts.
"Eighteen? You fell from the sky; did that hurt?" El's curiosity radiates from him.
"God, you are young." Bandlor grumbles. "It didn't hurt me much. Maximum fall damage barely touches you once you gestalt."
"What?" El blinks.

"Ugh, nevermind." Bandlor shakes his head. "So you really are just a commoner."
“You said you were the God of War?” El crouches down next to him. “Could you train me to fight?” Bandlor side eyes El taking in his appearance.

“Not to be a downer, but you look barely beyond average. That isn’t good enough to live through any real conflict. You need to be legendary. Maybe stick to your farming.” Bandlor takes another swig of his water.
“You don’t understand. My dad is dead, I lost the rest of my family, and I can’t just stay here on this farm forever. I need to be strong enough to fend for myself, to find my family, to protect people worth protecting.”
“Sounds like you’re a fool.” Bandlor doesn’t look up at El as he speaks.
“Three adventurers came through here a few days ago. They lit our mill on fire, attempted to burn it down, but I spotted the smoke. The fire didn’t do too much damage, but I don’t know why they lit the fire. I don’t know why they left so quickly.” El drops his shoulders. “The Lord recently sent a courier to town. If something is going to happen- If these adventurers have ill intent towards us or if they have some plot with the lord…”
“Stop panicking.” Bandlor looks up at El with little sympathy.
“I want to fight for my town, for my friends. You may not have your powers, but you've been in a thousand fights.”
“A million.” Bandlor leans back and puts his hands behind his head. "But I'm not gonna bet on some kid with a non-player class and no perception of the system."
“I don't understand magic, so what. I don't know what makes adventurers special, who cares. I'm going to fight anyway and I need your expertise. I need help. I’ve managed to fight a couple of Kobolds, but these adventurers are on another level.”
“You’ve spilled blood before?” Bandlor raises an eyebrow and looks the kid over.
“Yeah.” El shrugs. “It wasn’t enjoyable, but I did it to protect the village.”
“That's how you got that wound.” Bandlor nods to the bandages on El’s arm.
“No, I killed a wolf last night,” El answers.
“Huh.” Bandlor shifts and slowly rises. "You protected the village?"
"Well, no, I think I just wanted to adventure. To be a hero." El replies.
"So you had a call to adventure." Bandlor rubs his chin for a second. “Kid, you mind if I do some magic?”
“Ugh, no, I don't mind, go ahead.” El shifts uneasily.
“Bandlor places a thumb against one of El’s temples and chants a small incantation. A golden aura surrounds El and then disperses.

“Hah! I take what I said back. You might just be legendary. Let’s get you ready for a fight.”

“Alright, I need to survive as a common person now. If you have money, then that could seriously help me get set up here. If I can live here then I can continue to train you after today.” Bandlor explains.
El follows him past the cattle field and out into the fields.
“Where are we going?” El asks.
“I am tracking one of the wolves. You heard what I said about gold though, right?”
“Yeah, I have enough.” El says as he loads his crossbow.
“Enough for a god?” Bandlor smirks. “What, you’re a field hand? What if I said I want fifty gold?”
“Done. I’ll pay you when we go back to the barn,” El replies quickly.
“What? Really? You just have that kind of money?”
“I do.”
“Hmm. Alright. Well we are almost on top of this wolf. Climb that hill and see if you can spot it with your bolter.” Bandlor points to the tallest hill around.
El nods before climbing it as quietly as he can. He makes it to the top of the hill, lies down, and scans the area. Spotting fur moving through the grass, he takes aim. Waiting until the wolf rears its head, a rabbit in its mouth, El fires. The bolt grazes the wolf and it takes off sprinting.
El takes a deep breath as he reloads. He stands up on one knee, balances the shaft of the crossbow, and aims once more at the fleeing wolf who is now much further. He fires.

El drags the corpse of the wolf back to Bandlor. A bolt through its heart.
“Good job kid. Let's head back.” Bandlor smiles.
"What are you having me hunt for?" El asks.
"You had a call to adventure! It's rare, it's over played, if not a bygone theme, but you might just have the slimmest chance of getting a handle on the system."
"What does all that mean?" El throws his hands forward feeling lost.
"It means you need to earn more experience." Bandlor replies.
El pays Bandlor who heads to the local tavern for the night. The teen retires to his bed.
