El heads out of the barn the next day to go to the fields. Arkin catches him and tosses him an apple to eat.
"Don't work too hard," Arkin calls out.
"Four years and now you tell me I can take it easy?" El questions teasingly.
The teen smiles as he walks out to the fields. He needs to keep earning and keep saving. Hopefully one day he can buy a real set of armor and a weapon. Though he needs the training to use them.

One of the other field hands reports to Arkin that there are some holes in one of the fields. He found the remains of a rat. Arkin is sure it's a snake den.
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.
El heads out to the field, digs up the holes, revealing two snakes. He easily dispatches them with his shovel.

El spends the night with Arkin looking over the Mill’s repairs.
"Tomorrow you can start taking care of the cattle instead of harvesting Rye. The others need to catch up to all the work you've done." Arkin says.
"Watch the cattle? Aren't they on the other side of the village?" El asks.
"No, the yield over there wasn't as good. They need to move over here where the ground is more fertile." Arkin answers.
"Alright. I can help out with the cattle."
"I know you can son. It's why I keep you around." Arkin grins.
"I thought I was here because of my dashing good looks." El pushes Arkin's shoulder lightly.
"Don't pick on me. I'm old." Arkin shoves El.
"You can't pull the old card. The halflings say you're a quarter elf." El fires back at him.
"They smoke too much!" Arkin yells.
El and Arkin maintain eye contact for a second before the farmer's lip quivers. They both burst out in laughter. The two walk back to the farmhouse to enjoy some dinner before El retires to the barn for the night.
