After work, El waits at the Barn for some time. He walks around the barn and around the fields. Bandlor never shows up. After almost two hours. El goes to the tavern to find him. Two of the Lord’s guards are in the tavern having a drink.

Drigs nods to El as he enters and then heads through one of the back doors. Erin rushes over to El smiling in a much different way than she was the other night. It was a fake smile.

“Oh, you came. Here I need you to take this back to Arkin.” Erin hands El a small bag.

“No problem,” El responds before turning and leaving. He opens the bag once outside, but it is full of rocks.

El heads around to the back of the tavern where Drigs is waiting for him. The tavernkeeper nods to him and steps further behind the cover of a few crates. El leans against the wall next to him trying to make himself flat against the building.

“There’s eight of these guards in town, the lord and his accountant, and the three adventurers are back,” Drigs says. “They say that they saw smoke rising from the town on their ride out of here. Said that there was someone or something else hunting the kobolds when they were here. The guards are asking all sorts of weird questions.”

“Alright, we can probably get ahead of this situation. Or I could come clean about following them out to the kobold lair.” El says.

“Bandlor was taken by the guards for questioning. He said he would cover for you while you get out of town. Go to the kobold den. It’s the last place they would look for you.” Drigs grabs El’s shoulders. “You got that?”

“I can’t leave Bandlor.”

“You can’t fight eight guards, let alone an adventurer,” Drigs replies.

“Alright. Fine. Then I’ll go.” El nods. Drigs lets go of him and El takes off into the hills beyond the village.

He takes a long way around to the barn to collect his things. He climbs up into the rafter to bundle up his stuff. He ties it off to the backpack that he was using for weight training. With everything together, he’s ready to go.

A creak from the ladder sends him spinning around. The elven adventurer is facing him. One of his hands reaches around for a dagger.

El reaches for his sickle, but the ranger-elf lunges forward slamming his blade towards the teen. El quickly dodges away and carefully takes a few steps out onto the rafters.

“No use running boy.” The elf growls.

“What do you want?” El calls out holding his hands out for balance.

“For peasants to know their place.”

The ranger runs forward, wobbling on his second step onto the rafters. El takes the opportunity to slash out with his sickle. Managing to just barely graze his arm. The ranger pulls on El’s arm, balancing himself, before slashing out with his dagger.

"I'll kill you and all your friends who tried to cover for ya." The Elf slashes through air missing his taget.

El steps backward, pulling the ranger almost off the rafters, as he misses with his blade. El slams his sickle down into the chest of the elf, dealing two damage before the elf thrusts his dagger through El’s abdomen dealing four damage. They push away from each other before lunging for another trade of blows.

El slashes his sickle through the eye of the ranger. The curved blade scoops through the brain of the elf. The field hand lets go of the handle as the body falls backward slamming into one of the rafters before falling the rest of the way down. His hand shakes as he looks down at the body for a few terrifying seconds.

El gathers his stuff, climbs down, and tries to remove his sickle. It won’t come out of the skull easily with a tug and El hears voices approaching the front of the barn. He takes the bow from the dead elf, the quiver full of arrows, the dagger, and then grabs his own shovel. He slams the shovel through the neck of the elf, grabs the head by the sickle’s handle, and carries it with him as he runs out the back of the barn.

He throws his pack into his cart, grabbing the end of it, and runs with it out past the hills. His cart bounces along behind him as he flees into the setting sun.

El makes it to the kobold den but decides to camp just inside the entrance. Tomorrow he’ll explore the warren.
