Grond Part 2

Twelve pairs of elephant legs, the body of a whale, the tentacles of a giant squid, and with the head of a mammoth. The magnum opus summoned by the necromancer guild was the ugliest thing Fritz had ever seen in his life. It was an affront to evolution. The creature was huge. Its size was beyond what should have been physically possible for flesh to move. It scuttled like an insect. Its tentacles lashed the air violently and erratically as if it tried to feel it's way around. From the guardhouse, Fritz watched it with abject horror as it made its way from the undead encampment.

Fritz's heart pounded in his chest as he beheld the creature. The sheer power of the monstrosity was a clear danger. The other abominations paled in comparison. What Fritz witnessed was truly an affront to God. The beastkin watched it lumber towards them. Flanked by a veritable army, Grond advanced. Ada's eyes bulged at the sight.

"Fritz! Look! It's an ugly monster! What do I get if I kill it?!" Ada exclaimed, pointing towards Grond. Brenn let out a long slow whistle.

His heart nearly seized in his chest, as adrenaline began pumping. The wave of undead moved behind it, ready to support. From the camp of the necromancer's dark waves of power emanated like the heartbeat of approaching doom. Fritz turned back to the guard.

"Get ready! Get ready! Gaspard, get those cannons ready to fire! They're trying to bash down the gates!"

The guards jumped into action. The crews grabbed ramrods and gunpowder cramming the explosive charges down the barrel. As they did, several cannon balls were picked out from the pile. The beastkin placed the cannonballs at the mouth of the barrel, before shoving them down. Pushing the cannons up to the window they waited for the command. The large monstrosity ambled its way across the pockmarked field. Its twelve pairs of legs easily navigated the craters and ravaged landscape. Ada was practically salivating at the monster. Her fingers ran over her rapier as if she were daydreaming about slaying it. Moving like a centipede over the rough terrain it finally came into range.

"Fire!" Gaspard screamed. The guard holding the linstock placed it onto the touch hole. The gunpowder exploded sending the iron screaming. The magnum opus of the necromancer's guild never faltered from its course as the volley hit it. The sheer size of the monstrosity made it an easy target. The cannon balls punctured its flesh. A stray ball hit one of its legs. The force of impact breaking and twisting its elephantine leg. Yet the abomination had plenty to spare. The creature barely flinched, never faltering from its one true mission. It ambled forward as the tide followed behind. Fritz's ears rang like a bell as he moved to the window. The creature was still coming. Its eyes glowed with an indescribable dark magic.

"Keep firing!" He screamed over the chaos.

It kept barreling forward. Heedless of the damage, as the guards reloaded the cannons. Moving towards the back of the guard house, he looked down past the gates to the assembled barricade. Warriors stood at attention below waiting to defend the gates if the unthinkable happened.

Moving back towards the windows, Fritz ordered barrels of napalm over to be tossed outside, spilling onto the ground just before the gate's entrance.

The beast kept coming as the guard continued piling on the damage. The iron shot barely slowed the monstrosity down. Just behind it the legion of undead shuffled, waiting for the gates to come crashing down.

As it neared the heavy wooden gates it finally accelerated. Its large elephantine legs propelled it forward in a mad charge as the mammoth head pulled inward. Grond was preparing for impact.

The guards ignited the napalm. Heeding no sense of danger it charged through. Its legs coated in the sticky burning mixture. Yet the monster wouldn't stop. Fritz moved back towards the murder hole, as the abomination crashed into the gates. Its large skull splintered into the wood, as the gates shuddered to hold back the momentum. The wood cracked, barely containing the abomination. The guardhouse shook. The force of impact was like the loudest drum Fritz had ever heard. A deep bass reverberated throughout the city.

Choking fumes drifted up from the murder hole. Fritz moved to throw more burning napalm down, as Grond freed itself from the gates and prepared to strike again. The whale flesh burned like an inferno. Yet it wouldn't stop. Backing out slightly, it struck the gates again. Its head slammed into the gates. Thick wooden boards fell onto the ground as flames licked the gates. Fritz had to kill it and then put out the fire. Time was running out. The abomination would break soon if more wasn't done. Just outside defending the gates, guardsmen saw the creature. Tentacles lashed through the shattered gates. Pulling back it prepared to deliver the final blow.

Flames consumed its body like never before. Licks of fire hovered dangerously close to the murder holes. Fritz stood before the murder hole. The creature retreated pulling back as Fritz conjured a bundle of explosives. He threw it down the hole onto the creature's spine. Fritz jumped away for cover, as he waited for the burning body to ignite the charge.

With a final charge, the creature slammed into the gates. Swinging back, the door to the city was finally left open for the undead horde. The creature only made it another step before the charge ignited, blowing its spine to shreds. The guardhouse seemed to jump up. Fritz lost his hearing completely as the explosive shock wave traveled throughout the city. Bits of tentacles and blubber shot high into the air to land randomly amongst the buildings of Hueryss. The abomination collapsed into an unmoving burning heap of blubber half blocking the gates.

The gates were open to the horde.
