Chapter 9: This Farce Must End

Chapter 9: This Farce Must End

A few moments earlier.

The moment Kazumichi saw the horde of zombies accompanied by the ghouls, he immediately used [Analyze] on a zombie, then again on a ghoul to see just how strong they were.

Although Kazumichi was curious about how monster stats worked compared to those of other creatures, he didn’t have time to think about that. After quickly looking at the two status screens to gauge the enemy’s strength, he followed up by activating [Stealth] before using [Psi-Step] to teleport himself behind the horde that was blocking the entrance to the dungeon. He still wasn’t sure of the level and strength of each zombie and ghoul, but if their averages were around the two he inspected, then they wouldn’t pose a challenge for him. However, the horde of undead would likely kill the adventuring party if he didn’t step in.

It was then that he heard Vesryn asked where he had gone, but he was currently busy blasting zombies with his own [Arcane Bolt] barrage. However, Kazumichi was in no rush to steal the show. So he watched and waited. Each time Kirk’s team killed a few zombies, Kazumichi would kill one or two himself.

Despite the odds not being in their favor, Kirk’s team slowly dwindled the numbers of the zombies, only for one of them explode when it was slain. Bone fragments went flying, damaging all of Kirk’s team, as well as killing another zombie that was nearby. That one too had the [Burst] racial ability, which set off a chain reaction as others fell.

On top of some of the zombies exploding when they died, the ghouls had closed in on the group as well. The one Kazumichi had inspected, Ixnoc, used its [Miasma] ability, causing a thick purple cloud to fill the cramped corridor. The other ghoul did the same before both of them alternated between using their [Paralyzing Slash] and [Paralyzing Bite] attacks.

Kazumichi watched as one-by-one, Kirk’s party was overrun and dropped to the floor from the ghouls’ paralyzing attacks. With a bored sigh, Kazumichi quickly dispatched the remaining zombies and ghouls before letting his [Stealth] end. He walked over to the group, noticing that they were still alive, if barely.

Although he had made quick work of the undead, Kazumichi didn’t get out completely unscathed. The miasma was still thick in the air, and he watched his health tick down, only to shoot back up from his HP regen.

He stared down at the members of Kirk’s party, and he could tell that even though paralyzed, Vesryn was glaring at him. “Don’t look at me like that,” Kazumichi said. “I didn’t want it to end this way. I truly wanted to keep traveling with your group for a while longer. You’ve helped me learn a lot about this world,” he explained, feeling as if he owned the group that much.

“However, you’re just too weak,” he added as he stared off into the distance. Thoughts of his own weakness in his previous life flashed through his mind, before he blinked a few times and returned his focus onto Vesryn. “The weak die, and the strong survive. That’s just how it works,” he stated coldly.

Making his way over to Yarkin, he took one of the Halfling’s daggers before returning to Vesryn. “You were right to be suspicious of me. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you could have done,” he spoke as he ran the blade across the Elf’s throat, staring into his eyes as he choked on his own blood.

Kazumichi then returned to Yarkin before pulling his head up a bit. “You could have tried to kill me, but it would have just ended things much sooner for you all,” he whispered as he plunged the dagger into Yarkin’s heart. He then stood up and turned to face the sibling, letting another sigh escape his lips.

“I liked you two the most, but I can’t leave any witnesses. I’ll make it quick,” he said more gently, before raising a palm to each of them and letting an [Arcane Bolt] claim their lives as well.

He then closed his eyes as he finally focused on the system messages that he had been ignoring.

“Hm, so people give experience equal to their current level?” Kazumichi wondered aloud at the now silent dungeon corridor. “Good to know,” he said before taking the time to loot each of the corpses.

Among the party’s things, he found several magic items on both Dalia and Vesryn, and threw them all into one of the four packs the party had. He also took extra changes of clothes from Vesryn, and all the weapons the four adventurers had. He stripped them of everything that looked valuable. However, one item stuck out among Dalia’s belongings. It was a small cylindrical crystal that came to a point on each end. Kazumichi stared at it for a bit, but his [Analyze] ability wasn’t able to tell him anything about it.

“Does that mean I need a different skill specifically for items?” He mused to himself before stuffing the crystal into the already overcrowded pack he was now carrying. “Oh well, another mystery to add to the pile,” he huffed, then turned to see if the undead had anything of note. When he found that they didn’t, he continued on deeper into the dungeon.

I wonder if the rewards for clearing the dungeon will be greater if I solo it? He pondered, and a wave of excitement washed over him at the thought.
