Kazumichi continued to explore the forest he was in, considering the different options for where he’d sleep once the night came. There were plenty of massive trees with large branches that he could try to sleep on, though he didn’t think that was the best choice. Not only could he fall out and get injured, but he wasn’t sure what types of creatures lived in the forest, other than the Greater Elk he had killed earlier. Besides that, he considered the possibility of it raining, even though he didn’t know the current season, or if rain was even possible in his new world.
Eventually, Kazumichi found a cave as he ventured deeper into the forest, and decided to take a peek inside. He was still wishing that his [Stealth] ability lasted longer than 18 seconds. However, considering how easily he had managed to take down the Greater Elk, and his boosted stats, Kazumichi figured he should be strong enough to take on anything that might attack him inside the cave.
Still, Kazumichi decided to move slowly into the cave. As he went further in, he quickly realized just how dark it was compared to the outside. “Shouldn’t I be able to see in the dark?” He thought, having known from various games that most bestial-humanoid creatures had some form of nightvision or darkvision. That’s when he remembered that he still had some Racial Points he could spend and immediately stopped moving to bring up the status screen.
Once he had finished spending some of his Racial Points, Kazumichi brought up the list of his Racial Abilities to check the information there.
Racial Points: 850
Racial Abilities
Shapechanger - Lv50
Every 10 levels, you can select a new form to take on. When you turn into another form, it lasts for a number of hours equal to 10% ability level (5). You can choose to return to your original form at any time.
Chosen forms: human, wolf-hybrid, wolf, dire wolf
Casting Time, instant. Cooldown, 1 minute.
Heightened Senses - Lv50
Grants an additional bonus to your Perception ability equal to your Heightened Senses ability level.
Darkvision - Lv50
You are able to see in pure darkness as if it were low light, and low light as if it were bright light. The range you can see out to is equal to your Darkvision ability level + your Perception value (187.5.) in feet.
Since his Perception value was 137.5 thanks to the boost it got from Heightened Senses, he could now see out to 187.5 feet in complete darkness. Kazumichi was glad that the system kept track of all the different values for him. Having to calculate them himself would have gotten tedious very quickly.
Once he was finished letting his eyes adjust, he continued further into the cave. He only made it another 300 feet or so, before his ears twitched at the sound of movement up ahead. Kazumichi froze, not out of fear, but to better hear the noises. At first, he couldn’t place what it was, though it sounded somewhat familiar to him. It took him a few moments, but eventually, he recognized the sound as a sleeping animal breathing. He could tell it was a large animal, and given that he was in a cave, that narrowed down the possibilities. Or at least, it did for his world. Here, he wasn’t sure exactly what he would run into.
Part of him wanted to turn around and leave the cave. Habits from his previous life still hadn’t fully left him yet, but Kazumichi suspected that being a coward in this new world wouldn’t let him last long. Steeling himself, Kazumichi began to move forward again to see what the sleeping creature was.
When he finally got closer, he was somewhat relieved to see that the creature in question was a bear. That is until he saw the size of it. Just like the Greater Elk before, this bear was massive. His [Perception] ability also helped him notice that the area the bear was sleeping in, had been hollowed out to accommodate its massive size. Deep claw marks had torn out sections of the stone walls, and judging by how deep the marks were, the bear’s claws were even longer and tougher than his own. Despite this, he had the advantage and though he didn’t like the idea of killing a sleeping animal, Kazumichi knew he was in a survival situation.
Much like he had done with the Greater Elk, Kazumichi activated his [Stealth] ability, and charged toward the sleeping bear. However, unlike with the Greater Elk, the bear had somehow noticed him, evident by it waking up and looking in his direction. With a deep roar from the bear, Kazumichi’s hands shot up to cover his ears in pain. Apparently having high [Perception] ability wasn’t always an advantage.
The bear rose up, and though it was around Kazumichi’s current height of 9’6, it seemed to be slightly faster than him as it swiped at him with its claws. Bracing himself for the pain, he was surprised to find that there wasn’t any. Looking down at his chest where the bear had swiped at him, Kazumichi saw that not only had the bear not managed to slash open his flesh, but his HP had only dropped by 2 points.
With a smirk, which looked far more menacing in his wolven form, Kazumichi charged at the bear again. His own claws shredded through the beast’s thick hide in seconds. Just like with the Greater Elk, the fight was over quickly, though he had gained more knowledge from this fight than he had in his previous one.
Dire Bear slain.

Kazumichi whistled mentally to himself at the increase, since his current form wasn’t suited to actually whistling. He then brought up his full status screen again to see the changes.

Kazumichi realized a few things as he looked over his status screen. Firstly, he noticed that his stats didn’t increase with each level up. This meant that he would have to actively spend his Stat Points to get stronger. Secondly, he realized that he could have handled the bear fight more smartly by first using his [Analyze] ability on it, and then using [Psi-Step] to close the distance. He figured had he done that, he could have killed the bear before it woke up. However, had he gone with that tactic, then he might have not realized how little damage the bear could do to him.
With the cave secure, Kazumichi headed back towards the entrance. He didn’t think he had been in the cave for very long, but to his surprise, it was now dark outside. This was evident by how his [Darkvision] hadn’t changed much. There was more light than in the cave, and he knew that was likely from the moon. Looking up to confirm his assumption, Kazumichi was surprised to see not one, but two moons in the sky. One was approximately the same size as the moon from Earth, while the other was nearly triple in size.
“I suppose I shouldn’t be that surprised,” he remarked to himself with a slight shake of his head. He knew that the new world he found himself in, wasn’t the same as his. However, Kazumichi couldn’t help but try to find similarities between the two worlds. There were still many mysteries he was sure he would discover.
“I’ll just have to treat this like a video game, and explore as much as I can while trying to survive,” he muttered as he looked out at the forest.
As Kazumichi was lost in his thoughts, his Wolven ears twitched as they picked up the sound of something off in the distance. His [Perception] made it possible for him to know which direction the noises were coming from. He also realized that from the voices he heard, they were most likely people. This quickly piqued his interest, and without hesitation, Kazumichi took off as silently as possible towards the sounds.
