Chapter 10: Man or Monster Now

Chapter 10: Man or Monster Now

As Kazumichi continued his way through the dungeon, his mind began to wander. He had killed Kirk’s party with such ease, and without feeling any remorse or hesitation. The rush of gaining experience from them only made him want to find stronger people to kill.

Is this normal in Enniros? Do people seek to kill others to increase their own power? He wasn’t quite sure what to think about it. On the one hand, he was glad he finally had enough power to protect himself from those that would harm him. But on the other hand, must he sacrifice his humanity in the process?

Kazumichi thought back to a time in his previous life, when he was in highschool. An older kid bullied Kazumichi daily, until he had finally had enough. Kazumichi had taken a knife with him to school, determined to teach the bully a lesson. But when he confronted the other student, he found that he lacked both the strength and resolve to be able to do anything. In the end, Kazumichi received a much harsher beating than normal, along with having his knife stolen by the older kid.

His thoughts returned to the present, and he clicked his tongue at the memory. “I’ve been given a second chance, and now I have the power to live my life however I want,” he said with conviction. “So what if others view me as a monster now. I’ll help those I want, kill those I want, and do whatever I want!”

The sound of his voice echoed through the dungeon caverns, before silence once again returned to the surroundings. “No one will ever make me do anything I don’t want to do ever again,” he muttered to himself, his fists clenching as he stared ahead.

He continued further into the dungeon, not encountering anymore monsters for a while. It took nearly an hour before he eventually found another creature. This one was larger than even the Dire Bear and Greater Elk he had fought. The creature he was currently staring at had greenish-gray skin, and two tusks protruded from its lower jaw. Long, thick arms like that of tree trunks ended in massive fists the size of boulders. A pair of glowing red eyes turned to face him, and it let out a bellowing roar.

Kazumichi activated [Analyze] and was surprised by what he saw.

I thought this was supposed to be a lower level dungeon. Why is there a level 15 here?

His thoughts were interrupted as the Dire Troll charged toward him with surprising speed for its size. It swung one of its massive fists at Kazumichi. However, instead of evading, he decided to lift his hand simply to catch the troll’s fist.

Stolen novel; please report.

The troll’s eyes widened as the smaller creature caught its punch. The creature strained against the hand that held it back, doing its best to push its fist forward. But the tiny creature didn’t budge. Not only its small arm, but the troll couldn’t even push the smaller creature back along the floor. The troll let out another bellowing roar, anger filling its eyes as it drew its fist back. Throwing another punch at the impudent creature, the troll was surprised when it didn’t see its fist fly forward. Instead, it heard a loud thud and glanced behind it to see its entire arm lying on the ground. Looking at the bloody stump to its right, a pained roar echoed around the dungeon room even as the arm slowly began to regrow from its [Regeneration] racial ability.

Kazumichi stared back up at the troll, who was now missing an arm. His palm was still extended, and the residual flecks of mana still lingered from where he had fired the [Arcane Bolt] that took the troll’s arm.

Hm, interesting. The damage from my [Arcane Bolt] in combination with my Magic Attack stat, was more than enough to outright kill the troll. However, it seems that as long as it isn’t a vital spot, a creature can still survive such a disfiguring and brutal attack.

His gaze remained locked onto the troll, seeing its arm regrowing due to its racial ability to regenerate.

If I remember correctly, a troll’s regeneration can be stopped by using fire or acid. I don’t have any elemental attacks like that. But it would be prudent to get some, just in case. For now, however…

Kazumichi adjusted his palm, aiming it at the troll’s face this time. He then activated [Mind Blast]. For a moment, nothing seemed to happen. But after a few seconds, blood began to leak out of the troll’s eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Its head then exploded, coating the back wall of the dungeon room in a mess of gore. Kazumichi then walked past the troll’s body, not bothering to loot it since it didn’t seem like the creature had anything of value on it. However, when he didn’t receive a system notification for slaying the creature, his attention whirled back towards it.

He thought that by destroying the head, it would end the creature. But that wasn’t the case, as its regenerative capabilities were already quick at work to regrow the huge monster’s head. Narrowing his eyes, Kazumichi sent [Arcane Bolt] in a barrage at the troll. No matter how many times the monster dropped, it managed to get back up again.

Shit. Do I need to use fire or acid before killing it? He wondered as he opened his status screen. He continued to use [Arcane Bolt] to bombard the troll as he hurriedly looked for either a fire or acid based attack he could purchase with some of his points. Sorting the list by Sorcerer spells, he quickly found one and bought it, then increased its level to 100. Once done, he sent the newly purchased [Fireball] directly at the troll’s face.

A massive explosion of fire engulfed nearly the entire room. The troll was completely consumed by the flames, but Kazumichi found himself also being burned by his own attack. He quickly activated [Arcane Barrier], which helped to lessen the damage he was taking. Combined with his own HP regeneration, he was able to stave off the flames long enough to survive.

Once the initial explosion was gone and the flames died down, Kazumichi saw no signs of the troll. However, a smirk crossed his lips as he finally saw the system notification he had been waiting for.

He let out a low whistle as he saw the amount of experience he gained, granting him three levels in each of his classes as well.

That is some really nice growth. I should be more careful with my attacks though. I was so caught up in killing that thing, I forgot to look at the specifics of [Fireball]. With that thought, he brought up the spell in question.

Fireball - Lv100

When activated, you hurl a small mote of fire toward a point you can see within 1,000 feet of you. Upon impact, the mote explodes into an inferno with a radius in feet equal to your Fireball ability level. The damage you deal to everything within the radius is equal to your Fireball ability level + 100% base magic attack (800).

Casting Time, instant. Mana Cost, 100. Cooldown, 6 seconds.

That’s a big radius. Perhaps I should start getting some Warrior abilities. So far I’ve been relying mostly on my Sorcerer abilities, and occasionally my Psionicist one. But if I’m going to become a monster in this world, I’ll want to get up close and personal from time to time.

A wicked smirk crept across his face as he continued deeper into the dungeon.
