51 - Vengeance of the Skies

It was a night like many others.

Or so it would have seemed to an earthling watching Panpolis at that moment.

The citizens, though, accustomed to a never-ending cycle of light, knew better than that.

In the air, fear and expectation could be felt.

The reactions were various: who felt great curiosity observing the unique color of the sky.

Some retired soldiers were terrified because of the resemblance to the Demonic sky carved in their memory.

Crazed inhabitants of the slums laughed uncontrollably in the streets, announcing the end of the world.

Aristocrats observed slightly bored the sky as if waiting for the great finale of the show.

They instinctively thought their centenary lineage would save them from any catastrophe.

The merchants were already furiously working on ways to earn more in the following times of change and hedging their current investments.

In this fervent atmosphere, only Skalia wasn’t worried in the slightest about the sky.

For all she cared, she was more worried about dying because of her insufficient sleep, rather than some improbable Armageddon.

Still, she watched the sky as the bed continued rejecting her.

*I might as well watch something interesting before dying. *

At the oriental extremity of the continent was Panpolis.

Thanks to this location, the city developed a commercial and military harbor in the same geographical gulf.

It wasn’t clear from the city, but everything started hours before with the sea waves.

High tens and tens of meters, impetuous water walls fell impetuously on the ships.

This scene felt artificial even to people used to the idea of magic.

Someone was creating this natural event voluntarily.

Sure enough, the message of the eel-like brother reached his older sibling.

As the fishermen cursed the sky while calculating the economic damages they would suffer thanks to the tsunami, it started pouring down.

''It never rains, but it pours'', fitted the situation, both literally and figuratively.

The water of the tsunami was enhanced by the water of the incoming tempest.

Water, winds, and finally, thunders.

The forces of nature seemed to rebel against humans all of a sudden.

From this point on, all the citizens of the port region had the power to do was watch the scene, kneel on the ground, and pray to their respective God.

Useless was trying to escape or protect themselves in underground shelters.

This desperate situation could be caused and solved only by the gods.

Fear was mixed with rage in many of them.

The fear of dying fought with the raging pride opposing the idea of praying to the invisible monsters destroying their quiet lives.

Seeing this, both the individuals behind all of that continued laughing at the ridiculousness of the situation.

Poseidon talked to Zeus through two coupled crystal spheres.

‘’Ahahahah, are you watching those insects?!

With their prayers, I almost got back all the causality I spent creating the tsunami!

How foolish…Should I do it more often to earn more?! ‘’

Zeus watched his stupid brother, red in the face, veins protruding, drunk for power, and probably another mix of drugs.

Waiting to gain some more from the worship of the desperate citizens, he decided to utilize the character he had trained him to react to.

‘’Ahahah, that’s for you to decide, that is, if you have enough power for that! ‘’

The slight prick felt by Poseidon, but somehow it made him relax seeing the usual reactions from that man full of ego.

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

‘’Ah, if you have that much power, show me your final fireworks! ‘’

Hearing the challenging tone, Zeus felt like sighing but endured.

*Should I just go with it or rebut him before…yeah, first, a slight tease. *

‘’Recently also aquatic shows are quite popular, why don’t you show me how it’s done?! ‘’

Poseidon was already hooked on the word ‘aquatic’ and was now red because of rage, not excitement.

*How dare he?! *

‘’I will definitely show you! ‘’

At that moment, a tornado made of water raised from the sea.

Inside could be seen pieces of destroyed ships, swimming school fish, and rocks.

All the sea was inside of it.

The kneeling crowd, watching all that, fainted as if instinctively opting for the most painless death possible.

Poseidon was momentarily ticked off by the interruption of that influx of ‘money’ and the judging eyes of Zeus made him anxious.

As a teacher checking for the student to complete the assigned work, his eyes observed him.

New energy filled his crazed sight, and the water mass doubled again. Losing control of that much destructive power meant destroying the whole port section of Panpolis.

Finally, Poseidon released that colossal cone-shaped water mountain.

He decided to spare those praying just a moment before as a future means of passive income.

In this way, the size of the Gulf of Panpolis doubled in size in around one minute.

No ships or wrecks could be seen anymore.

Half the buildings and the entire harbor pier disappeared as if dispersed by the wind.

The only lifeforms that could be seen when the vapor created by the impact started dispersing were those who had fainted, now floating on the sea surface.

Zeus watched the post-apocalyptic scene created by his brother and didn’t know what was the most effective way to make fun of him first.

‘’Sometimes, I don’t know if I should call you naive or money-hungry.

If you wanted to spare them and gain more causality in the long term, you should have at least shown them your full power instead of carelessly making them faint! ‘’

Poseidon's breath was now ragged because of the intense attack he had just released.

Still, oxygen was always enough to shout to his older brother.

‘’Shut your trap and keep your part of the deal! ‘’

Grimacing slightly because of the clear ordering tone, Zeus felt for a moment the need to slap that fish-brain moron but managed to control his anger and answered after coughing, feigning ignorance.

‘’I think you’re too out of breath to make yourself heard…

Anyway, I’ll show you how it’s done. ‘’

A moment later, the sky darkened as the people of Panpolis were now seeing.

Then, when all eyes were waiting, holding their breaths, watching the dark sky, tens, hundreds, thousands of thunders showered the ground.

None had time to pray, ready itself for death or similar actions.

A second passed, and the eyes closed because of fear, opened again.

They weren’t dead yet, or so it seemed.

In that incredible scene, where the hearts were surprised to be able to beat yet, the eyes started searching for proof of what had just happened.

As controlled by an unknown force, all the eyes in Panpolis moved in an erratic, chaotical manner, before stopping suddenly on one mountain of charred stones, surrounding a crater tens of meters deep.

Before, that place was the temple of Nemesis.

Years later, that day would be remembered as the start of the War, as the ‘’Vengeance of the Skies’’.
