Chapter 9

As the days went by nothing was that different, once I got used to the changes, ignoring the night shifts, it felt pretty similar to before the expedition, although I had lots of fun daydreaming about what was going on with the expedition. Maybe they had found more demons like the one that had attacked me before they found me. After a while at the church, my opinion of it had only grown and I had become every patriotic about it, I was proud of our soldiers and was sure that they would be fine if they fought anything like it. I was more unsure about what I wanted to become when I got here, there were a surprising amount of options, but after seeing how amazing the soldiers looked I think that I might have found my calling. Before this I had been studying carpentry to help with my job, they were the books that Markus had gotten for me but now, I resolved that once I finished the ones that he gave me then I would ask for ones about fighting, and maybe I could ask Remi about fighting. Also when I thought about it now being a wagon boy was a blessing in disguise, if I were going to be a soldier then I would probably go on expeditions to places and it would be helpful to know about these things.

It was another completely normal day we were two months from the day the expedition left and none of us were worried. I had been working on some boxes, now that we had run out of boxes to fix in the church people had been bringing me boxes for me to fix, this was because of Luke, making me think that maybe I was judging him too harshly, we had talked about how I didn’t have anything to do, and then we had switched to talking about our plan for the future. Luke had told me that I would probably need some money if I wanted to start as a soldier, and together we had brainstormed the idea to tell people out in town that I would fix their boxes for a very good price. However this came with a lot more challenges than I had thought leaving me with more complicated boxes than I had ever had to deal with, most of the boxes and other things in the church were made by the same person or were made with canvas, leather, wood or some combination of those materials. However there were no such restrictions from the boxes out in town they were all shapes and sizes, right now I was working on a cylindrical shaped box that was giving me some trouble, it was a combination of wood and leather and it had a large chunk missing from one of the corners, I had to peel back the leather then cut out a chunk of wood surrounding the whole to get a clean hole and then I had to find a new piece of wood, fit it into the hole, then I had to reattach the leather around it. It was taking me a long time since there wasn’t really anyone to teach me.

Other than that today was completely uninteresting, I didn’t even have a watch. But then all of a sudden three of the four boys on watch came running down. That was bad, there were four boys on watch at all times each with a different job in case of an emergency one would come get the rest of the wagon boys to help unload, and if everything was good and how it should be, we would only see that one boy running down to com eget us. The second was supposed to go tell Markus and the other bosses in charge is there was a problem, we could see both of these boys and it wouldn’t be that concerning, but it was the third boy's appearance that really frightened me, the third boy was meant to go get Remi, but only if there was a lot of injured or there was a medical emergency. Seeing all three come running, as well as it only being month two of three made me really worried. I decide in that split second that if they are going to find Remi then it must be an emergency then my help would be better spent, helping her. I race down the halls to Remi’s office, she is sitting there tying a plant with twine preparing it to be dried out. I run in and shout

“The expedition is back, and they need you.”

“She looks up sharply.” the smile that had been on her face immediately got wiped off.

“Help me grab my things.”

Standing up she grabs a wooden box and opens it, I remember repairing it, it has tons of different smaller partitions on the inside to hold small vials and plants inside. She grabs tons of herbs many I recognize some for burns, bleeding, and magic, but the most that I recognize are for pain. However there are many that I don’t recognize or that I have forgotten the meaning for.

Going over to her wall she starts pulling down different drying plants and bottles from the shelves. She then reaches over and pulls out another bag this one is canvas and she throws an entire drawer full of bandages into it. She also takes a third back and puts some things that I haven’t seen before in it. A wicked-looking saw, a hammer for some reason, and some other tools although she gets in the way and doesn’t let me see what else she puts into the bag. Once she is done she hands me both the wooden bag with herbs and the canvas bag with bandages take that and go I’ll be right behind you. With that we both start running back to the wagon yard, on the way we pass the boy who is coming to warn Remi, he looks at us in shock until he notices me and then nods before turning and running in a different direction no doubt to go warn someone else. We both get to the wagon yard to see the gates open and all hell breaks loose.

The walls and the gate had somewhat blunted the sound and I had left before the expedition had gotten close, but now that they were here and the gate was open I could hear the groans, the crying, and the screaming. I laid eyes on the troops that had left earlier a few months ago proudly decked in wight, blue, and yellow. Now their tabbards were more brown and red than the original colors.
