Chapter 8

Another few weeks had passed and now my job was much harder. We were packing up a wagon, we were getting ready to send out another expedition and we had to prepare it before Breakfast. When I got there in the morning Markus was waiting for me.

“It’s time to start packing a wagon, everyone will be helping so wait here while I go and get the rest of us.”

When he returned he gathered everyone up and then began“When you all got here I mentioned that sometimes you would have to work long hours. Well, that time is now. You have to all start packing the wagon and then we can finally go to breakfast if we finish in time.” With a clap, we were sent scattering. I went over with a few of the boys and started bringing boxes over to the wagon. Once I’d brought the first box over I went up to Markus.

“How long will this expedition last? Or a better question is how many supplies will we need?”

“The trip will last about 3 months so what does that tell you?”

“That would be dozens of boxes. But that would probably need two wagons.”

“Yep that's right, but because two wagons are going that means there are even more people helping with the second wagon so how much of each thing would we need.”

“At least 24 boxes of grain and probably around 16 of dried meat and fruit. Plus the equivalent in other supplies.”

“Correct, now get it done.”

I went back over the the boxes and started hauling them to the nearest wagon with a few of the other boys. After a while, we had brought all of the boxes and now we had the difficulty of getting them into the wagon we brought a long wide piece of wood and laid it against the side creating a ramp. We would layer the crates in the bottom of the wagon creating a second floor. The wagon was incredibly deep, for this express purpose, so we had to bring in another board to use as a ramp into the wagon. Once we got everything set up we started fitting crates into the bottom of the wagon once we had fit all of them in we had a pretty solid new floor. There were small gaps between most of the boxes, but this was intentional there were small drains in the bottom of the wagon so we needed a way for the water to reach these drains although if everything went to plan then hopefully we wouldn’t need to use these drains at all. Once all of the crates were in the bottom of the wagon and setup correctly we took a giant piece of canvas and set it over all of the crates. Then we took planks that we had and laid them on top of everything. They fit like a glove, these wagons had been made for this specific purpose making everything fit together like a puzzle. Once all of the boards were set up the wagon looked strange as though it just had an abnormally thick bottom. You couldn’t tell that there was storage beneath the boards unless you knew about it. Once we did that we placed the canvas boxes at the front and put the leather rolls along the walls. Once we did everything looked rather nice and organized. However, we weren’t done. We did the same thing with the other wagon putting in a few extra boxes of everything to make sure they had enough just in case and also to make everything symmetrical. We also put a few extra things with the leather rolls. We put about forty tents along the edges of the wagons. Then we were almost done with everything. The seven o’clock bell had come and gone and we were rushing to get everything done. Once the exhibitionists were done with breakfast they needed to leave and we had to be ready. Once we had all of the canvas boxes and the leather rolls added we covered them in tarps that we tied down against the walls of the cart. Now that everything was tied down we added a few empty chests and boxes on the sides around the tents and leather rolls. We also put a wagon top inside the wagon free floating so they could put it up with short notice. They lit lanterns and put them on polls sticking out of each of the corners. I watched as four horses were led to each wagon. I didn’t get to see the horses very often so I was somewhat curious. With everything set up, all we had to do was wait.

A few minutes later a large cohort of troops march out to the wagons, each of them wearing chainmail or leather armor. With a matching helmet on each of their heads and a matching tabard that was white with a blue and yellow design. Watching all of this happen was quite impressive and I stood a little straighter and puffed my chest out a little more in pride for our church and their expedition. All of the troops filled into the wagon except a few of them who sat at the front and grabbed the reins. With a yell, they were off. I stood there a little longer than the rest and watched them ride out into the street. Then once they were out of sight I went to go have breakfast.

The next few days after that were hectic Markus wasn’t exaggerating when he said that we would work long hours there was a lot less work to do but the hours were terrible. There had to be at least 4 people at the wagon yard at all hours of the day no matter what. This meant that we were on a rotating schedule where some of us would have to stay up however to counteract this there really was no work to do so we would often just sleep during the day when after we had the all-night shift. During this time I rapidly increased my reading ability. The first week or so was stressful and then it calmed down, they weren’t supposed to be back until three months from now so we didn’t have to worry for a while. Although we still kept watch anyway. I spent a lot of this time reading or exercising, if you weren’t on watch then you were not working so I would often sit in the wagon yard and read. Or would visit Remi and see how she was doing and she would sometimes show me her collection of plants and have me try and remember their uses. I spent a lot of time reading her plant book. Where I learned about many different plants. I would then have fun being quizzed by Remi Later before working out. We would play this game where I would do weighted pushups, I was able to do weighted pushups now, and for every question that I got wrong, I would have to do a pushup. Although it’s not too bad right now because I’m still a slow reader and I haven’t read that much. There aren’t that many questions that she can ask me although with how much we hung out I was learning lots of different ones very fast

“What do you use to help with burns.”

“Hah Trick question! What type of burn?”

“It is swollen and red with large blisters forming.”

“You use sandbloom gel.”

“And if the burn in bright orange of dark purple also with large blisters.”

“Then you want to use a more processed solution. Like accenderet balm. ”

“Not bad.”

This continues for a long time and by the time we finish all of the questions I am shaking and immediately collapse. With a smile, I stand and look at Remii.

“I’m pretty impressed ”

I have been going through these questions for the past few days and I finally have most of them memorized. Today a lot of the questions were tricks where there wasn’t enough information to accurately treat the wound or symptom.

“Thanks, sadly I have to go, I don't have much time to make it to dinner. And then my next class. I also have to take night watch today.” I say with a groan.

“Well have fun!” Remi says with a bright smile. Although I can see the cruel gleam of laughter in her eyes.

Walking out I head to dinner. This time it's meat from a pig. I get thick pieces of pork along with potatoes and carrots, and like always two thick slices of bread, not that I’m complaining. Along with some sort of light cider. I sit and dig in eating quickly, Luke doesn’t come to visit me today which I don't really care about. When I finish I return my tray and head towards my only class reading and writing. I had gotten to continue with the history book and it had been very interesting I liked reading much more than I did writing and it was always with a heavy heart that I was taken out of the book to be told that I should practice writing. After arriving I grabbed the history book off of Mr. Hislop's desk and sat down beginning to read…

After the war Between Confident and Coraline. There was a period of peace with rapid growth and expansion everyone remembered what Confident had done for them and the church was doing amazingly expanding alongside the kingdoms of of humankind. After a while however, there was some dissent, what if It had been made up, the non-believers said, or how could he be that powerful it must be an exaggeration, or even that their magic wasn’t what helped balance the magic and prevent the gates. Some even went as far as claiming that Confident was the evil one by taking control of all the magic in our world and him getting rid of our portals was a bad thing. This led to mankind, which up until this point had been one large kingdom, the Kingdome of Confident to splinter into many different factions, many wars also followed often against the church leading to a period of weakening that the church still hadn’t fully recovered from. The wars lasted decades when one group was routed another army would rear its ugly head often from a different faction trying to capitalize on seemingly a moment of weakness by the church, however. After 50 years of fighting the church had -

sorry time is up Dante, time for you to practice writing. I groaned,

“Can’t I read a little longer, please?

“ Nope, you need to write about it while it’s fresh in your mind.”

With a sigh, I closed the book and took a piece of paper that he was holding for me. After a few classes, my handwriting had become somewhat legible and that’s when we switched the slate for paper and a pencil. With one last sigh for good measure, I leaned over my paper and started writing.

I Sat at the wagon yard and thought about the history that I had read today it was so interesting that I had gone through life not knowing how I had ended up here. I didn’t mean how I ended up at the church. But why I was here as a human, some all-powerful being came to our world thousands of years ago and had a battle that shook the entire world and in the aftermath my ancestors were able to find a way to thrive, eventually ending up with me here. Wars had been fought the entire fate of humankind had been at stake, yet none of that mattered I was still here, everything had lined up perfectly so that I would be here right now it was amazing. With that last thought, I turned back to my book. Markus had let me use one of the lamps and I was sitting on top of the roof by the wagon yard gate and reading my books, Right now I was learning about how to treat different infections.
