Chapter 3 - Escape to Nevaron

Chapter 3 - Escape to Nevaron

The king's castle was splendorous. It was incredibly tall, with walls detailed with figures of angels and reliefs of flowers. The columns were thick and full of detail at their base. The floor was smooth and shiny, so clean that you could even see your reflection in the water.

Once there, Nork climbed the castle stairs and abruptly entered through the large main door, walking quickly with an angry expression on his face. He heads for the king's chambers.

On the way, he meets two butlers standing in front of a room. Alfred and Thaddeus.

— Alfred, Thaddeus! Is the king in the royal hall?

—Yes My Lord... But what do you want with him? Why are you so angry?

Alfred asks worriedly. You've never seen him so nervous before.

— Don't worry, Alfred! It's nothing!

And he continues walking towards the royal hall.

— What's it going to be this time, Alfred? Hasn't he given up on that silly idea?

Curious, asked Thaddeus.

— I don't know, Thaddeus... I don't know...

...

..

.

Arriving at the door to the royal hall...

Pof!!!

Nork gives the door a big push, and the noise goes through the whole immense room.

Far away from Nork, at the beginning of the hall on a large metal throne, was the king. He wasn't startled by the noise at the door.

His seat was in a part of the hall where the floor was much higher than the entrance and there was a small staircase to the lower part.

Pointing his finger at his father, Nork began to speak in a loud voice.

— I TOLD YOU, DIDN'T I? I TOLD YOU THEY'D ATTACK AGAIN AS SOON AS THEY COULD!

— IF WE DON'T PUT AN END TO IT ALL THOSE PREVIOUS BATTLES WILL HAVE BEEN IN VAIN! DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY MEN WE LOST IN THEM?

The king looked down at his son and said.

— You don't learn, do you, son?

The King descends from his throne and walks slowly up the stairs to his son, standing on the same level. Face to face with his son, he says in a cold, serious tone.

— The answer is still no. I won't let you lead my army on a suicide raid into the lands of the Orcs and Goblins. It's a foolish and immature plan. Don't let your emotions guide your decisions. It will only cause bad things for you and my kingdom.

Nork recruits hard.

— For the love of the gods, listen to me, father. We will carry out an attack on their fortress, we will stay in the country of Nevaron. Everything will go well, it will be a success.

— We can't let them attack us and get away with it. We must give them an answer.

— If everything goes according to plan, we'll secure our borders and we won't have to fight any more pointless battles like the ones we're fighting today.

— Best of all, we will restore our honor as the strongest kingdom of all. We will have everyone's respect.

Shaking his head sideways in denial, the king replied.

— You still don't understand, do you? Why are you so immature, son?

Nork looks confused, but doesn't answer anything.

— Why would a prosperous, healthy and wealthy kingdom like ours enter into a foolish war that would bring us nothing but death and suffering? Just for honor? You would risk the lives of all of us just for honor or for an insignificant improvement to our border, would you?

— Nork, a king first and foremost has to look after the well-being of his kingdom and its citizens. Keep the kingdom strong, united and above all happy and confident for the future. That is the duty of a king.

— You have to understand that, son, because after I die you will be in charge of the kingdom and you will take care of everything just as I did. You will be a kind and caring king.

Desperate and not knowing what to say, Nork choked on his words.

— But... father, what if...?

The king's face was contracting with rage and his forehead and neck were already full of veins. With a look of rage, he let out a great shout.

— THE ANSWER IS NO!

He turned his back on his son and walked towards the throne. As he sits down, he turns around again and says.

— Didn't you hear what I just said? Go back to your room. I don't want to hear any more about this. Get out of here!

Taking his arm, he signals his son to leave the room.

Nork grits his teeth as hard as he can and shouts as loudly as he can.

— AERYS BRAVIER! I KNOW, YOU FOOLISH KING!

— I WILL GO TO NEVARON AND DO EVERYTHING I SAID! WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT! I WILL END THIS UNNECESSARY WAR! I WON'T BE A COWARD LIKE YOU!

The King, seeing this, stood up and rebutted his son's answer even more loudly.

— YOU ARE FOOLISH AND ARROGANT! UNWORTHY OF THE POWER YOU POSSESS! YOU WANT TO BRING WAR TO THE GRISHWOLDS! YOU WILL BE PUNISHED. GET OUT !!!!!

Nork comes out of the hall like a beast, pushing everything around him. His expression of fury would scare a grizzly bear.

He walks fiercely to his room where his wife and daughter are. He gets there.

— Honey, put some cold clothes on Sam. We're going on a trip.

Little did his wife know that he had already arrived from his mission. Seeing him enter the room like that without so much as a "hello" worried her.

— What? What happened? Why are we traveling? Were those screams you and your father? And how was the mission?

— I don't have time to answer that. Do what I just said. Put some cold clothes on Sam. We're going to Nevaron.

— I and a few other men are going there to sort out the kingdom's affairs.

Trembling with fear, she takes hold of Nork's right arm.

— But why now, dear? I'm getting scared of you

Seeing that his wife was frightened, Nork gave her a brief smile to calm her down. Stroking his fiancée's head and smiling, he said.

— Don't worry, everything will be fine.
