Chapter 5: The Codex's Label Operation

Chapter 5: The Codex's Label Operation

Codex sat on the stool by the cafe's countertop while the cafe was half packed with mostly people in their teens with a few elderly couples. Catherine walked in front of Codex and placed a sundae in front of her. Codex stood on her stool and bowed to Catherine at a perfect ninety-degree angle.

"I- um, a simple thank you is more than enough," Catherine said as she pleaded with Codex to sit on her stool properly before she fell off it. Codex carefully sat down on the stool and created a spoon from her cluster of small pink cubes before beginning to eat the sundae. Codex took a bite of the sundae, but a techno neon shadow formed over her eyes as she felt a wave of unease come over her. Codex slowly glanced up to see Catherine holding a metal spoon in her hand while giving Codex an intrigued stare.

"Well, guess you won't be needing this spoon then," Catherine remarked as she dropped the metal spoon into a red Ne-Lon cube with a cleaning symbol engraved onto it. The spoon fell through the Ne-Lon cube before landing on a conveyor and heading through the hole in the wall leading to the backroom. Codex stared at her constructed spoon before sighing and taking another bite of the sundae.

"So... um... I hope you don't mind me asking, but... what's your name? Ion didn't mention it when he asked me to check in on you before he left for work," Catherine asked as she crouched down to match Codex's eye level. Codex averted her eyes a little from Catherine, causing Catherine to nervously and awkwardly smile.

"Probably because I don't have a proper one...," Codex murmured. Catherine raised an eyebrow before she leaned on the countertop and rested her chin on her hand.

"Proper one?". Codex nodded whilst she had her spoon in her mouth.

"Yeah... my previous... guardians only referred to me by my Ne-Lon ability....". Codex took in a long deep breath.

"Hyper Infimum Codex Cube: Infinite Codex," Codex stated before letting out the remainder of her breath once she finished speaking.

"That sure is a mouth full for a name...," Catherine remarked playfully as she glanced upwards.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

"Perhaps you should give yourself a new name," Catherine recommended. Codex placed her hand on her face but shook her head.

"But naming kids is something adults do tho...," Codex whined in a sulking manner. Catherine listened to Codex's words; she couldn't help herself but smugly grin.

"So, you want Ion to give you a name then?" Catherine inquired. Codex was quiet before glancing up at Catherine with puppy-dog eyes.

"Yeah...," Codex uttered shyly while covering her face with her arm. Catherine giddily smiled at Codex's adorable reaction and told Codex she'll let Ion know. Catherine spotted someone entering her cafe and said to Codex she'd be right back before she hurried off to take the new customer's order.

Underneath her arms, Codex had a neutral expression while wondering if she played up the abandoned kid role a little too well.

"I'm fairly certain if he names me, Mr Ion will be more susceptible to my influence, and he will...," Codex uttered mentally before she felt a paw tap her shoulder. Codex raised her head and saw Felina (wearing her purple dinosaur-themed cat-shaped onesie) sitting on the counter next to her sundae.

"I'm fine... just a little tired," Codex stated while smiling at Felina. Felina nodded before she teleported away.

"Now.... Wait, what was I thinking about again?". Codex scratched her head before shrugging, and she continued to eat the sundae she was given.

Meanwhile, Ion soared through the airspace of the many levitating, neon-light-filled city blocks as Felina sat on his shoulder.

"It's just like those people to not even give the people in their care proper names," Ion snarkily grumbled as he placed a hand on his chin.

"But she wants a name given by me...?". Ion glanced at Felina as she was giving Ion a smug side-eye.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Ion said snarkily as Felina side-eyed him even harder before disappearing. Ion groaned and rubbed his eyes with his fingers.

"I'm guessing Felina told me about it now, so I have more time to think of a decent name for...," Ion uttered.

"Codi? Nah, too close to the one the institution gave her.". Ion continued to vito more names as he flew towards his destination.
