Chapter 1006: 313. Noland does good deeds_2
Xander picked himself up from the ground, looked around, but couldn’t catch sight of Evelyn Thatcher.
When he glanced at the rooftop where the person in the black robe had been, it was already deserted.
“Damn it…” Xander cursed under his breath, anxious and at his wit’s end, unable to find any way to call Evelyn back.
As he fretted, the shadow death overseers waved their whips, driving the laborers towards the City Gate.
Xander was compelled to move with the crowd.
Halfway there, members of the Vigilance Team set up a Magic Megaphone on the rooftops, broadcasting commands from the Upper City Area to the crawling Shadow Death Labor Corps below.
...
Xander’s mind was preoccupied with finding Evelyn, and he didn’t pay close attention to the content broadcasted by the Magic Megaphone.
It wasn’t until he followed the crowd out of the urban area, stepping onto the vast plains, that he suddenly snapped back to reality.
“Where are we going?” Xander hurriedly asked a fellow laborer nearby.
But the laborers near him had already been tormented to near death, all in a state of confusion with no response.
It took Xander nearly two minutes to find a laborer who still retained a shred of cognitive ability.
The laborer, with dead fish eyes, glanced coldly at Xander and said:
“Where else could we be going? We’re off to build a barrier.”
“What barrier? Where are we building it?” Xander grabbed the laborer’s arm and asked.
The laborer shook off his wrist:
“In the Stone Forest, idiot. Stop grabbing me.”
Stone Forest, constructing a barrier… Xander was taken aback, thinking of the “Thunder Wizard” he had heard about before.
Could it be that the group of Thunder Wizards hadn’t left the Stone Forest?
Were they going there to build a barrier in order to confront the Thunder Wizards?
Xander took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down and think quickly.
Shadow organisms didn’t build barriers by wielding hammers and building materials, constructing defensive structures as living humans might, in a slow and cumbersome manner.
The shadow death overseers would set up a large Magic Circle in advance.
The Shadow Death Laborers stood on the nodes of the Magic Circle.
Once the Magic Circle activated, it would quickly extract the shadow energy and Soul Energy of the Shadow Death Laborers, summoning a Shadow Barrier that levitated mid-air.
If they were lucky, the Shadow Death Laborers in the Magic Circle could retain some Soul Energy and not die on the spot.
If they weren’t, they would be drained completely, forced to transform into Shadow Fragments and be reborn in the Lower Town of City of Exiles.
Xander knew that if he wanted to make contact with the Thunder Wizards, he would have to find an opportunity to leave the group and rush into the depths of the Stone Forest before stepping into the Magic Circle.
But escaping from the group under the watchful eyes of the overseers was undoubtedly suicidal, and he might even end up shattered along with his fragments by the overseers, with no chance of resurrection. noveldrama
What to do, what to do, what should I do…
Xander was extremely anxious.
A strange feeling mysteriously emerged in his heart.
Xander shuddered, looking around in all directions, feeling as though someone was watching him.
All he could see were the numb laborers and the cold overseers — it seemed no one was paying him any attention.
Maybe I’m having illusions because I’m too tense… Xander scratched his head, once again forcing himself to calm down.
As he continued to follow the group, he pondered how to make contact with the Thunder Wizards.
For him, there were only two worst-case scenarios.
One was to be caught on the spot by the overseers and subjected to torture.
The other was to be blasted into waste by the Thunder Wizards after successfully escaping, should they perceive him as an enemy.
Either scenario signified that he and Evelyn would have no chance to escape their predicament.
But to do nothing would be to face the same inevitable fate of death.
For himself, and for Evelyn, Xander decided to take a risk and bet it all.
…
…
“What a group of woefully unfortunate people. They were living well just outside Baldur’s Gate, then abruptly attacked by dark creatures, and now they have become Shadow Death Laborers in the City of Exiles.”
Inside the Temporary Base, Noland Lee frowned as he contemplated the Deconstruction Results in his mind.
To prepare for the counterattack from the City of Exiles, he had purposely placed numerous “Tracking Marks” in the direction of the City of Exiles.
Any “Tracking Mark” that sent out a Mental alert would receive Noland’s immediate attention.
About 3 minutes earlier, a “Tracking Mark” on the outermost perimeter of the Stone Forest caught Noland’s attention.
He cast “Mind View” at the mark, peering through the Magic Vision, and saw the Shadow Death Labor Corps approaching the Stone Forest.
The Shadow Death Laborers numbered around 6000.
They were huddled together en masse, surrounded on all sides by shadow death overseers drifting in the air.
Such a large group of people suddenly moving towards the Stone Forest was bound to draw Noland’s attention.
Noland immediately cast Deconstruction on the Shadow Death Laborers and the overseers, extracting plenty of Information.
Noland had intended to use Deconstruction to check the Labor Force for high-Level Shadow Death Scouts hiding among them.
But after observing many laborers’ Memory Fragments, what he sensed was only extreme numbness, as if everyone had lost the hope of life.
Nearly all laborers’ memories were filled with random images and lots of content harmonized out by the System.
There was but one individual who showed unusual animation — a laborer named Xander.
His Memory Fragments were highly intact, indicating that he was clear-headed and determined, not reduced to a fool by the dire circumstances.
