Chapter 1005

Chapter 1005: 313. Noland does good deeds.

“Ding ding ding ding ding ding!”

The bell rang rapidly and urgently, as though hastening the slow-moving Shadow Death Laborers to gather quickly.

From the mouth of the alley came the shouts of the Supervisors, and occasionally the sound of whips cracking against the laborers could be heard.

Xander and Evelyn Thatcher exchanged glances, sensing a hint of something unusual.

In Lower Town, the bell rang every six hours.

The Supervisors used the bell to summon their Shadow Death Laborers, count them, check their work, and distribute food—a sort of shadow fruit containing slight soul fragments.

...

The bell they heard now was the third time today.

At first, Xander and Evelyn thought it was a regular assembly signal, but now the commotion at the alley end made them feel the situation was rather urgent.

The irritable and cold-blooded shadow death overseers seemed extremely anxious, as if they couldn’t wait to gather all the laborers in the square immediately.

Working together, Evelyn and her partner lifted the pot of thick porridge they had been cooking and walked out. noveldrama

Thanks to the thick porridge in the pot, the shadow death overseers did not want to see the scene of the pot being overturned.

The bubbling and thick liquid inside the pot effectively kept the overseers waiting at the mouth of the alley at bay, preventing their whips from landing on Evelyn and her partner.

“Hurry up! Hurry up!” a shadow death overseer shouted at Evelyn and her partner several times, throwing their whip towards the roof eaves nearby, repeatedly urging the passing laborers.

Evelyn and Xander kept their eyes on the ground, avoiding eye contact with the overseers.

They kept moving, conversing softly as they walked.

“This assembly seems a bit different,” Xander said.

Evelyn raised her head slightly, glanced around, and then quickly lowered it again:

“I saw members of the Vigilance Team. These guys usually don’t show up here during the assemblies.”

Using his peripheral vision, Xander caught a glimpse of the Vigilance Team members on the rooftops and saw a few shadow death wizards holding two-handed magic wands:

“Their gaze makes me feel uneasy, Evelyn. Could this have something to do with the Thunder Wizard out of the city?”

“Shush, don’t talk now.” As soon as Evelyn saw that they were approaching the Vigilance Team members, she immediately ended the conversation.

Being Undead doesn’t mean they don’t need light.

In the City of Exiles, the Shadow Deathers use candlelight that emanates a dark purple radiance to illuminate the roads.

Sunlight from the surface and normal light would harm the Shadow Dark Soul.

Only this dark purple glow is suitable for the Shadow Dark Soul. Not only does it light the way, but it also nourishes the Soul of the Shadow Dark Soul, replenishing some Soul Energy and shadow energy.

Evelyn and Xander followed the crowd through the Street Alley lit by dark purple candlelight and joined the bustling square.

There, they saw even more members of the Vigilance Team.

Those guys stood on the rooftops around the square like statues, quietly watching the Shadow Death Laborers in the square, their gaze indifferent and somewhat disdainful.

A few distinctive figures caught Evelyn and her partner’s attention.

These were a group of humanoid creatures clad in Black Robes, standing on the rooftops further away.

The wide Black Robes completely obscured their appearance and build, making it impossible for Evelyn and Xander to determine their identity or origin.

Around these Black Robe figures, several high-level shadow death enforcers were gathered, seemingly protecting the former.

Once the Shadow Death Laborers were mostly assembled, one of the Black Robe figures drew the magic wand from their waist with a gloved right hand and pointed it towards the square.

Despite the distance of over a hundred meters, the person cast a broad swath of black radiance over the laborers in the square.

“The scent of Death Energy… that person doesn’t seem to be from the Shadow Death Watch Group,” Xander whispered in Evelyn’s ear.

Evelyn watched the black light fall on her, and a hazy glow appeared on the surface of her body:

Evelyn carefully felt the changes in her body, but didn’t detect any discomfort:

“This seems to be some kind of death-class detection spell.”

Xander scratched various parts of his body but also didn’t notice anything unusual:

“Yeah, it must be a detection spell. What are they trying to do?”

Evelyn and Xander looked around.

Many Shadow Death Laborers emitted black light, just like the two of them.

However, for some Shadow Death Laborers, the black light emitted had slight white spots in it.

A few notably special Shadow Death Laborers had white, stripe-like radiance appearing within the black light emanating from their bodies.

A group of shadow death overseers pushed through the crowd, rushing toward the laborers who were emitting white spots and white striped light.

Catching people by the overseers often spelled no good.

The scene quickly became chaotic, with cries and howls filling the air as the overseers’ whips cracked menacingly.

“E-E-Evelyn…” Xander suddenly trembled, pointing shakily at her:

“You’ve got white spots appearing on you too.”

“What?” Evelyn looked down and saw that her black body surface, which had been uniformly dark before, was now covered in numerous white spots.

Before Evelyn could figure out what was going on, a black whip lashed out, snapping around her neck and coiling several times, binding her throat.

The owner of the whip pulled back their arm forcefully, wrapping Evelyn with the whip and pulling her over.

Xander, panicked, shouted loudly, trying to pull Evelyn back, only to be hit by several whips, falling backwards to the ground, crying out in pain.

Similar situations played out across the big square, causing utter disarray.

The overseers swung their whips continuously and released ferocious Terror Claws and fear crawlers, devouring a few laborers who were leading the disruption, finally suppressing the unrest at the scene.
