Chapter 3: Suspicious And Doubt

Chapter 3: Suspicious And Doubt

Favorite foods-!

* According to Krux, he likes mushroom stew and a nice piece of warm bread, considering it as his favorite meal. It was special to him because it was usually their meal in the orphanage where they grew up, sharing memories with friends around them while they ate. Krux doesn’t like mushroom stew, rather he sees it as simple food, but because of his past he sees it as somewhat special. Although for bread, Krux really likes bread.

* Fyuma’s favorite food is anything her mother cooks, she was pampered a lot by her. According to her, she also likes mushroom stew, since it was the first meal she had tasted.

* Krus’ favorite food is Krux’s favorite food, but it seems as though Krus doesn’t like mushroom stew.

“I guess cooking isn’t for everyone, huh? Krus, you shouldn’t copy her.” I said with dismay present in my voice, while facing my head at Krus. Now that I realize it, Krus is a beastman fox, basically like Fyuma, but not a wolf.

Anyways, I prefer foxes. Krus’ innocent eyes stared back at me, after a few seconds, her face then turned into a very innocent smile, yet that smile was something I can never return back. I stared at her, my face unmoving.

I kind of wondered, when was the last time I smiled, back at the orphanage, even though we were poor, we were kids filled with wonders of the world. We didn’t know that we were simply fated to be dying in the wet soils of war, soaked with the blood of the dead.

Krus’ eyes were beautiful to me, ethereal, they were blue, like the azure blue skies that we used to stare upon before being sent out to war. The blue sky that we gazed at while sitting beside a lemon tree.

Now that I think about it, their graves, I haven’t visited it for ages right? The mist forest is a large vast forest after all, if I remember correctly, beastmans here worship the God of speed. Which in turn allows them to travel faster.

If not for little Krus here, it would probably take a few hours to fully get to the village, we needed to walk after all to keep Krus safe.

“Big brother Krux?” Krus’ voice rang inside my ear while all of my thoughts disperse, I only stared at her for a bit before raising the palm of my hands gently rubbing her hair and ears. Nevertheless, she purred for a bit before fully melting into my palm.

“You should go to sleep now. Fyuma and I can take care of other things.” I continued to rub my palm against her hair, which was somehow still soft and silky despite being a slave for years. Krus stood up from the rock that we both sat on before walking slowly to the tent.

“I know you’re eavesdropping, you can come out now.” My eyes averted towards the bush that was before in the dark woods. “You’re back early, Krus went to sleep.” I once more said before the bushes started to ruffle once more.

Fyuma stood up from her position. “I want you to answer me a question.”

“If it’s something I can answer, then sure.” My head turned around to her while her eyes were back to its usual steeled eyes, her face seemed like a rock, unmoveable.

“What’s your past?” Fyuma’s voice spoke out, yet I wasn’t surprised. “Your eyes, they feel like they’re staring at something that I can’t see, somewhere so far away. I’ve seen people like that.” Fyuma said before approaching slowly.

“That’s a bold question.” My head turned around and my eyes retreated back to the tent where Krus currently sleeps in, or so I wish to, she just might have a habit of eavesdropping. Actually, nevermind she is eavesdropping.

I could see a very small eye, just right in between the small gap at the entrance of the tent, although it does not matter to me, I plan to lie until the very end. “A normal civilian.”

“A normal civilian wouldn’t go out the way to the Mist forest and have a sword around. Who truly are you?” Fyuma’s footsteps got closer and closer while she glared at me with an unknown intent. I do wonder what it was.

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

“Fine, I’m an adventurer, formerly.” It was a lie, totally an obvious lie. “I retired a few while back, since then I’ve been living a normal civilian life until I met that little fox. I felt pity, so I decided to take her here.” I then averted my eyes to Fyuma’s eyes that looked at me suspiciously.

My eyes, completely dead empty, one without emotion. A poker face. Fyuma’s lips twitched a bit while staring at my eyes.

“That’s a lie.”

“It seems I underestimated you, you’re smarter than I thought you were. What gave it away?” The thing that gave it away was simple. To enter the mist forest, of course you had to enter the legal way, which is by going through the entrance which was guarded by beastmans.

Adventurers are welcome to the mist forest, humans, elves, really any species, since the chief is chill about it. But it’s only for adventurers. When you become an adventurer, you get an adventurer’s card.

And that adventurer’s card was revoked. Meaning if I was retired, I can never enter the mist forest as an adventurer, I entered her illegally. By the way, I could get arrested.

Fyuma’s lips twitched, she gritted her teeth. “You could have said you were an adventurer, yet why not?”

“I was testing you. I gave a small hint. But as to my past, that’s something I’ll never say. We are simply partners in this journey through Krus. I have no obligation to say it to you.” I stared at the eyes of Fyuma, her face frowning before she pounced on me.

I could have simply dodged yet I didn’t why? Because my instincts told me not to. Fyuma’s body crashed against me while I fell to the floor, her body right above me, she sat right on my pelvis while glaring at my eyes.

“It is my obligation because you entered here illegally.” Fyuma’s face immediately got closer each time she said a word in her sentence, until to the point where our lips could just simply intertwine right now.

“Quite bold. I like bigger chests though.”

“Answer me.” She ignored my jab before pulling out her dagger and pointing it at my neck, although it’s a nice pounce, she leaves too many openings. In that moment I could have taken her dagger easily and killed her with it.

“Then make me.”

“You’re the one that’s bold.” Fyuma’s dagger got closer to my neck while I could feel it piercing a small part of my skin. A small drop of blood came out from my neck before my eyes retreated back at her face.

My hands immediately then quickened, seemingly like a blur I took out something from my pockets, of course this alerted Fyuma, her ears perked up while she stared at the thing that I was holding in my hand, her attention diverted.

“An adventurer’s card?” Fyuma’s voice was both mixed in disbelief and somehow relieved, I didn’t know. “Y-you-”

“I lied, I’m an adventurer.” Yes I’m an adventurer, I’m not that stupid to simply enter somewhere without preparations. 1 year ago I decided to register as an adventurer for a specific reason to accept a request that gave a reward that was a very important item that I needed.

Who knew that it would be useful right now? I chuckled inwardly while Fyuma’s shocked face looked at me. “So would you mind getting off-” Before I could even finish my sentence, Krus, who was somehow out of her tent standing just a few studs away from us, was there.

“A-Ahh! They’re making a baby!!!”

“Ayo!?”

“When were you-!?”

“Big sister and big brother, what were you doing last night?”

Oddly enough to the younger beastman, the two of them didn’t respond, Fyuma’s cheeks were beet red, she was absolutely fidgeting while looking around frantically. “Krus, me and K-K-K-Krux were-”

“We were doing something confidential, though, even if I say that you won’t understand it. Let’s just say it simple, it’s a secret between me and her.” I managed to answer clearly while scratching my head, although I can’t deny that the situation was quite awkward after she exclaimed those.
