Chapter 1 - The Fiend’s Awakening

Chapter 1 - The Fiend’s Awakening

When his eyes opened, the world around him was fuzzy at first. The smoke surrounding clogged his nose, and his back was extremely wet. As the world around him came to vision, so did the dawn sky with its faint tinge of orange from the sun, giving an eerie glow to the surroundings. The next thing he realized was how much every inch of his body was hurting. He tried to get up, but to no avail. His ears were ringing, and his sight had yet to fully calibrate. However, despite the ringing, he could hear a faint voice calling to him.

Voice: "Hey, hey, you there! Are you okay?"

It took all of his strength just to bring his head up to see who was talking to him. It was then he realized he was in a large hole. With his vision nearly returned, he could make out that he was in the middle of an icy tundra. The melted snow beneath him had become a sludgy mess of what it once was, making him feel extremely slimy. As he faced the one calling to him, he could just make out a boy and a girl in the distance, standing on the edge of the large crater that he seemed to be in the middle of. He just managed to come out with a reply:

"I don't know."

His answer was honest. He frankly couldn't remember a thing. This entire situation was quite overwhelming for him, as he could distinctly make out the girl sliding down the slope ahead. The boy she was accompanied by was attempting to stop her.

Cautious Boy: "Wait, we don't know if he's-"

She seemed to take no heed to his words however, as she was quickly standing over the boy, her arms on her hips. Her pale blue hair and bright features were a direct contrast to the gloomy atmosphere. Her attire was a mixture of blue and silver, with crystals and embedded snowflakes placed precisely to create a fashion statement. Her skirt swayed in the light wind, and despite the freezing temperatures.

The girl looked down at him with a wide smile, an expression that quickly changed to shock.

Enthusiastic Girl: "Woah, I've never seen a guy like you before. Keilan, Keilan, look!"

The boy accompanying her, Keilan, made his way beside her, his expression souring dramatically with just a glimpse of the person in front of him. He stretched out his arm, facing it to his side as a sword made of ice formed itself in a matter of seconds. It was truly beautiful, as it appeared to sparkle without a care. Some of the majestic quality of it was lost however, when Keilan pointed it in front of him menacingly. His tone was angry and demanding.

Keilan: "Who are you? State your name, affiliation, and intention immediately!"

In all his confusion, a single word rang out in his mind like a bell vibrating. Sorn. He had by now, managed to sit up, and he had a much more comprehensive understanding of his predicament. Looking at the man named Keilan, he appeared to be quite young, probably the same age as the girl next to him. His scowl was an insult to his looks, as his pale blue fringe matched perfectly with the simple yet formal knight attire that boasted the same pale blue tone.

Sorn: "Sorn is my name. I don't really know who I am, much less what I'm doing here."

Staring into Keilan's eyes, it was clear even to him that Keilan’s unflinching blue irises were laced with distrust.

Keilan: "So you have no idea what you're doing here."

His monotone method of communication made it clear he was expecting a specific answer. This was probably why he remained unsurprised when Sorn shook his head. The girl besides Keilan slapped his arm down, glaring at him as his sword lowered, breaking his apathetic demeanor. He opened his mouth but the girl beat him even in this regard.

Not as Enthusiastic Girl: "Seraph's sixth wing, give the kid some slack. He just fell from the sky and looks worse than a furless goat in a blizzard."

She gave Sorn an understanding smile, introducing herself as Crystal.

Crystal: "Nice to meet you, Sorn. I'm sure you have just as many questions for us as we have for you. Would you be alright with coming with us? We can talk when you don't feel like such a mess at our temporary house."

As she reached out a hand to help Sorn up, Keilan, who seemed to be at a loss for words, seemed to regain his footing with that last sentence.

Keilan: "Hold on. Him? You can't be serious Crystal, he shouldn't even exist, just look at his hair, it's black! Besides, that group Tolen part of will be here soon, it would be better-"

Crystal put a finger to her lips, stopping his dialogue.

Crystal: "If they're coming, we should leave soon, Keilan. I'm not changing my mind on this. After all, I'm sure we can trust Sorn! Right?"

She slapped Sorn’s back after saying this, nearly cutting off his breath for a moment. For her lanky figure, she had more physical strength than he could have imagined as he stumbled half a meter forward. He gave a not so very resounding "yeah" before Crystal turned to Keilan with a knowing smirk and her arms crossed. They both knew who would be the one to fold first.

With a hefty sigh, Keilan's sword faded away faster than it had appeared. He gave an another defeated sigh before turning his glare back to Sorn. It was clear now from his expression that what Keilan felt wasn't simply a matter of mistrust, but disgust. As though Sorn was a pest.

Keilan: "I'll be transparent, I don't trust you. Your memories might be gone, but your arrival is too convenient to overlook. Moreover, there should be no other people on this island, especially not someone coming from a comet. Your existence is a threat and if you didn't look so weak and pathetic I would've eliminated you by now. Make sure to remember that, outsider."

Having said his piece, it seemed as though Keilan's confidence had been restored, and Crystal took little interest in his speech, making it clear this was likely a recurring theme for the man. As he turned his back towards them and they began to walk as Sorn had politely accepted Keilan's words, as he wanted to learn more about his situation before making an unnecessary enemy. As they walked more though, Keilan had one more thing to say.

Keilan: "And Crystal, if he's caught, it'll be you taking the fall this time."

Crystal: "Yes, yes, of course."

She turned to Sorn, her interest rekindled as she poked him in the chest. They were matching Keilan's pace as they journeyed but were a few steps behind. Sorn didn't need to be a genius to figure out why Keilan was keeping his distance. It did hurt him a bit truthfully, but it was quite low on the hierarchy of his worries.

Crystal: "With all that aside, I think it's about time you tell me everything about you."

Dawn was now over, and the bright sun gave a bright glow to everything below, shining across the blankets of snow and in turn, the features of Crystal's face as they walked through a thicket of leafless trees in a dense forest. Sorn gave an internal sigh before responding, giving himself a moment to accept and process his current situation.

Sorn: "I guess I came from a comet.”

End.
