Chapter 1 - Vigilante

Red alarm lights blared throughout a laboratory hallway as a systematical voice came out and reverberated through the on guard facility. “Intruder confirmed at sector four. Suspect identity not confirmed. All personnel, please exercise caution if encountered, I repeat.......”, as the announcer continued the warning, a dark blue haired figure in a similar dark blue down jacket and black jeans. Wearing a black mask that resembled a dragon covering half of his face ran across the white hallways. After running for a bit through the hallway, he climbed up a rather thin emergency exit staircase leading upwards in a hurry.

Upon arriving at the top of the stairs, he glanced to the side where two Japanese looking men in suits pointed their pistols at the intruder, “Freeze right there!”, shouted one man as he shot an electrifying bullet that caused yellow sparks to form at the intruder who stopped the bullet as he swung his right arm sideways as if slashing through the air, the bullet fell down as blue sparks let out from his hand. The boy clicked his tongue as he threw a small apparatus at the two, the apparatus burst into thick smoke that impeded the vision of the men as he made a wild dash past them.

“Damn!”, cursed the man as the smoke faded while he turned backward to see where the intruder had run off to. Seeing the intruder at the end of the hallway by the window, the intruder sighed.

“See you.”, said the intruder before jumping down the window as the men cursed before following. “Wait!-”, shouted the second man as the two looked at the dark alleyway beside the building. But to their surprise, the intruder was no longer in sight with only a metal garbage box stood there beside a dim yellow street light.

“He’s..... not there.”, muttered the man in confusion as to where the intruder had gone off to. He gulped as he looked at the other man who nodded before reporting off to their leader.

“Ma’am, er..... the suspect has gotten away. ..  y-yes Ma’am there’s no sign of him anywhere. We’re over at the left alley beside the entrance of the lab.”, said the man shakily as the two gulped at the fact they let the suspect get past them.

A rather annoyed looking blue haired woman in a white long sleeved polo shirt and a police jacket was seen along with the two back up men in suits standing along an empty alleyway with a tin garbage box lit up by a small street light.

“Are you sure this is where he got away?”, asked the woman, with a hint of annoyance in her voice as the men nodded. “Yes ma’am. He got away, albeit we don’t know where.”, said the first man in a suit with a hint of disappointment in his voice while the woman sighed before approaching the garbage bin. “He one upped us.”, muttered the woman before using her foot to push the garbage bin aside, revealing an open manhole which was covered by the garbage bin. The men groaned in surprise, “T-this is....?”, muttered one of the men.

“It leads to the sewers. Tch, they prepared their escape route in advance.”, said the woman angrily as a man gulped.

“Should we chase them?”, asked the man shakily as the woman shook her head. “No point. He already got away by now, if only you guys studied the area properly, you probably could have caught up.”, said the woman, clearly annoyed as the men hung their heads without anything to say for themselves.

“*Sigh* At any rate, looks like we’re getting another job fairly soon.”, said the woman as she picked up a piece of paper beside the manhole. “What is it, Ma’am?”, asked one of the men as the woman stood up again before showing them a piece of paper with a chibi penguin sticker over it with cutesy roundish sticker fonts that spelled,

“Noot noot, better luck next time.”

“H-him again?!”, asked the man in disbelief as the two inspected the square paper even closer as the woman went out and looked at the laboratory from the outside. She glanced at it before sighing. “This lab too huh....... Hmph, what a petty self righteous criminal.”, muttered the woman before glancing opposite of the facility where a lively and bright city stood amidst the night. The wind picked up around her blowing her hair slightly as she looked at the city with distant eyes before shaking her head.

“Come on, we have a report to make.”, shouted the woman bossily as the men straightened up before replying. “Y-yes Ma’am!”, said the men shakily as the woman left, followed by the men as they rejoined the other police officers posted around the facility as well.

Academy City, a city established shortly after the year 2027, along the coast of the pacific ocean, the city is a hub for researchers and students alike, with only one thing in common, their drive for learning more about Asterium, a resource rich in energy and lead to enabling humans in summoning unnatural occurences, in short, it was what people once called magic. In this city of hopes where students aim to become stronger and scientists aim to help the world through their research, a boy had decided to take a different path.

“Yaaaaa~ I didn’t expect you to pull that off amazingly.”, said a carefree looking woman with long black hair with a few streaks of white mostly held back by a headband as she lazed around the couch inside a rather large apartment with a complete kitchen with a square dining table with two chairs. On the other side, near the window panes was a living room with a large flat screen TV and a couch underneath it was a soft and fluffy looking mat as a dark blue haired boy went out of a nearby room behind the living room wearing a tracksuit and penguin house slippers looking tired as he lightly chopped the black hair in the head as he opened the TV where the news played.

“-As for the latest news, a laboratory near the 7th district of academy city was apparently raided by a suspect the police identified to be the same one leaving penguin notes on their heists. This makes it the sixth case so far.......”, continued the reporter as the boy yawned before looking at the woman lazing around.

“Why are you here? I thought you’d be busy with the logistics.”, said the boy with a tired look on his face as he looked at the woman who shook her hand up and down. “Sheesh, what’s wrong with congratulating my favorite accomplice? Good work with that magnificent steal last night.”, said the woman as she smiled at the boy.

“It’s in the contract. Anyways, why didn’t you just call me over?”, asked the boy as the woman shrugged. “You’re sister’s not gonna be here anyway right? With all the work you’re giving her.”, said the woman jokingly as she winked at the boy who paused before looking down.

“I guess so. How are the negotiations doing?”, asked the boy with a curious look on his face. The woman shrugged before responding, “Who knows? That’s not our business. The deal was we’d just help the client take back their data. But well with the penguin notes you’ve been leaving, I’m sure the ACP will do a thorough check up of the lab.”, said the woman contently as she sat up energetically.

“How about you? Are you still hell bent on revenge?”, asked the woman while the boy sighed. “Definitely am.”, said the boy before gripping the mug with chocolate the he was carrying tightly before muttering, “For my parents’ sake and hers, I’ll bring that guy down.”. The woman glanced at him with a bit of concern before sighing.

“Well, that’s not my place to interfere.”, said the woman before grinning. “Oh by the way, I do hope you’ve been exercising your right leg.”, she continued, changing the topic as the boy gave a skeptical glance. “W-what is it?”, asked the boy as the woman chuckled before standing up excitedly as she took out a bunch of papers.

“Congrats, Haku, you’re going to school!”, said the woman happily as the boy named Haku picked up the papers, glancing at it, he started to crumple the papers.

“A-a-ah! W-wait, just hear us out!”, said the woman who started to panic as Haku dropped the paper as he looked at her with a tired look on his face as the woman sighed in relief before sitting down. “Geez, you’re pretty impatient aren’t you?”, said the woman as she collected the papers.

“Pray tell me, how the hell is going to school helping me do my underground work?”, asked Haku as the woman sighed. “Do you really think you can keep your identity from your sister forever? You’ve been out of school for three years, well, barring the academic freeze two years ago, you can’t keep hiding your identity without sticking your head where kids your age gather. Look at it this way, if you go to school, you can go out more without an alibi and even stay after late hours.”, said the woman as Haku sighed.

“Fair point.”, admitted Haku as he nodded reluctantly. “Fine then, leaving the fact that you forced me to school without my consent, which one did you pick?”, asked Haku while the woman gave a wry smile, “Saint Camelot academy.”, said the woman as Haku gave her a look of skepticism.

“W-what?”, asked Haku, clearly bewildered as he leaned closer.

“Saint Camelot Academy.”, repeated the woman with a constant smile as Haku banged his head on the table. “Why the hell did you send me in that whacko school....? What the hell were you thinking, sending me there?”, asked Haku who knew that the logistics was smart. Every decision they made was well thought out and practi-

“Ah that, we played darts over it.”, said the woman as she laughed merrily while Haku gave her a death stare, making her flinch. “N-now, don’t look at me like that, I-I mean, that’s where your sister graduated right?”, asked the woman as Haku banged his head on the table again.

“I hate you so much....... Dammit, Misa.”, said Haku as the woman named Misa sat back. “You managed to finish up until first year two years ago right? There shouldn’t be a problem since you were one year earlier than your batch add the academic freeze, you should be the same age around the second year students. You totally won’t feel left out.”, said Misa as Haku sighed.

“Yeah if the people there were damn normal. The students there are either chuunis or actual workaholics. I mean, what kind of normal person would willingly enroll in a school literally filled with white knights?!”, complained Haku as Misa chuckled.

“Don’t you think that’s pretty nice? A double sided life as a student and a secret agent, it’d be pretty thrilling.!”, said Misa as Haku groaned. “My Astrium capability is absolutely horrible, I don’t think I can survive this.”, said Haku as Misa smiled at him, “Don’t worry, everything’s gonna be okay, you’re our favorite and talented accomplice after all, I'm sure you can survive without using your sword”, said Misa as she ruffled Haku’s hair.

“You and the logistics might have started out as accomplices but we got your back if you have ours. We’ll support you with all we got.”, said Misa as Haku sighed. “Sure sure.”, said Haku as Misa pouted, “Geez, I was being supportive for once!”, said Misa as she stood up along with the papers. “Well I’ll get going for now, still gotta work you know?”, said Misa as she walked up to the door to leave. “Alright, say hi to Miles for me.”, said Haku as he saw Misa off.

“Sure, stay cool, Kuku, I’ll send the details of your enrollment sometime. Have a fun time~”, said Misa as she waved and left the 12 floor apartment building Haku stayed in. Haku closed the door before sighing as he went back inside his apartment and sat down on his couch to relax as he picked up the remote control and switched the channels.

“Guess I’ll just watch Pengu.”, muttered Haku as he took a stick of chocolate pocky and relaxed as his favorite penguin slice of life anime played in the TV. As the show played, Haku was deep in thought over his current situation.

(School huh....... No, that’s not important right now. What I have to do is clear........), thought Haku as he stood up to gaze at the streets outside. Outside was a rather modern looking street with cleaning drones on duty. Seeing small students play around down the street happily, he clenched his fists.

(This city is messed up. People live in blissful ignorance while the higher ups do whatever they want and cover up their crimes. That’s why I’ll change all of it, I have to.......), thought Haku as the entrance door of the apartment opened.

“Yuki-nee?.”, said Haku as he turned around to see a blue haired woman wearing a white polo shirt over a police jacket, with a cup of coffee in hand she looked at Haku.

“I’m back.”, said the policewoman who gave a tired smile.
