Chapter 24 - Landfall

Chapter 24 - Landfall

Ten minutes until the Deity Hammer is fully charged. Damn, this has been the most boring 24 hours of my life. Thank God it’s almost over.

As I gripe over my boredom, I hear an uproarious sound over my head like that of thunder. My head bolts up and in a flash of light I see a figure appear; white hair, dark skin, and a flowing cape. It looks like something out of a superhero movie. The figure slowly descends onto the ground. Awfully dramatic. She speaks in a low, dominant voice.

"I would stop doing that if I were you," she says.

"Why would I stop now?" I chuckle. "I assume you’re the entity the people of this dimension call the Voice of God." My voice picks up in anger. "Tell me, how many souls have you unrightfully summoned to this dimension, denying them of rightful afterlife?"

She laughs. "I lost count at the triple digits." This bitch… I’ll kill her! "And you’re partially right. I’m an avatar of the Voice of God. Killing me won’t truly defeat the Voice of God, and I’d be willing to wager that’s what your machine there is for."

"You’d be right. Golems, take care of her." The two golems I brought spring into action, lunging at her with killing intent. I hear them exchange blows. 30 seconds left until activation. A green orb emerges from the hole in the Deity Hammer, levitating about 4 feet above it. I hear one of the golems break behind me. 20 seconds. I put all of my strength and focus on sending energy into the Deity Hammer. 10 seconds. I hear the other golem break and hit the ground. She winds up for a punch. With her fist inches away from my face, the Deity Hammer activates.

A giant, chromatic beam of incredible energy shoots from the mouth of the Deity Hammer and into the sky. It is unbearably loud, like a diesel engine. A large fracture appears on what appears to be the sky itself. Success! Inches away from my face, her punch stops and once animated body of the God’s avatar falls limp. The beam continues flowing for about a minute before it eventually stops. Out of the fracture caused by the Deity Hammer, I see a smoking body emerge and start falling towards the earth as the fracture closes as quickly as it formed. I didn’t expect it to work THAT well. The body flops in front of me. It looks completely different than the avatar; it has six arms, three legs, and two heads.

"I swear on my soul that I will rescue every poor soul that you trapped here. You deserve far worse than what I’m going to do to you." I extract the god’s soul using my soul extractor and begin examining the corpse for potential resources. After a thorough examination I determine it has nothing of use, but I elect to take a tissue sample due to the extremely unique biology of the god.

"Leviticus, our conquest of dimensions is going to have to be put on pause. I have another job for us right now." I say as I return to the tower.

"Oh?" Leviticus queries.

"If the most recent god I killed is to be believed, we have much work to do in this dimension. Gather the praetors and priests. This may take several months."

I enter my study, delighted to see that Julius’s body is complete. I dare not look at it out of politeness.

"It’s ready whenever you are."

"I’m so excited to get out of this small dirty prison," says Julius. "I owe my life to you."

"Go fuck yourself," says Winter. I suppose after months of painful poking and prodding it’s only natural he would despise me.

"Now, now. I’ll have a new body for you soon, although it won’t be flesh and blood. Luckily for you I’m experimenting with new types of golem brains. The standard clockwork processors I’ve been using have been… disappointing in the intelligence field." He does not respond.

"Alright, Julius. The device on top of the curative vat is called a soul beacon. I want you to channel your intent into it." I gesture to a cube-shaped construct on top of the curative vat. I place her on top of it and she closes her eyes in focus for a moment. The soul beacon begins to glow. "Very good. This device will catch your soul before it moves beyond the Veil and place it in this new body. I assure you that even though it may look shriveled that the second your soul enters it I will push in a surge of Victus (Life) Essentia. This in combination with your soul will allow the vessel to progress at a natural rate."

"Wait… what do you mean ‘catch my soul’?" She asks, suddenly apprehensive.

"Sorry about this. In order to begin the transfer, you have to die." Before she can react I stab her through her tiny skull with my primal cutter. Her small fox-like body twitches for a moment before stopping altogether. There is no room for error. The goggles of revealing show her wise soul emerge from the corpse and gravitate towards the soul beacon. The second it makes contact, I flip a level and release a massive surge of Victus (Life) into the vat. The small, shriveled effigy of a body almost instantaneously grows into a fully formed human. Once again, I dare not look out of politeness. The new body slowly opens its eyes and panics for a moment before I drain the fluid from the vat and open the door. She falls onto the floor in a heap.

"I understand due to the difference in your body’s brain chemistry, it may take some time to get used to it. There’s spare clothes in my closet. Rejoice, for you have been saved." I cackle an almost insane laugh in my thaumaturgical triumph, for I have conquered death itself.
