Night had fallen, casting a warm darkness over Yaris. Ryn found herself enveloped in the comfort of her bed, finally allowing her weary body to rest. Her dreams were vivid, filled with memories of battles and the faces of friends and foes alike. Suddenly, a loud bang shattered the peaceful silence, jerking her awake.
Groggy and disoriented, she sat up and rubbed her eyes. Another loud noise echoed through the room, followed by distant screams and the ominous flicker of firelight dancing against the walls. The grogginess evaporated instantly, replaced by a surge of adrenaline. She leaped out of bed and rushed to the window.
Peering outside, her eyes took in the chaos. Flames licked the night sky, and an eerie glow hovered over the city. The screams grew louder, more frantic. In the flickering light, she could make out figures moving rapidly, their nano-swords glinting as they clashed and fought.
Ryn activated her voice chat, her fingers moving swiftly over her watch. "Kyle, Elara, Jax—anyone! What the hell is happening?" she demanded, her voice stern.
Kyle's voice crackled through the comms. "Ryn! It’s bad. Rogue Droppers have infiltrated Yaris. They're attacking everyone, setting fires... it's chaos out here!"
Elara chimed in, her tone equally alarmed. "We're trying to regroup. Meet us at the Council Chambers if you can. We need to get organized."
Ryn glanced out the window again, her eyes narrowing. Among the chaos, she spotted a group of people moving quickly, and slightly hunkered down, their swords in one hand and guns in the other. She initiated a scan through her watch, and their outlines glowed red on her display—Rogue Droppers were right outside her window.
"Dammit," she muttered under her breath. Ryn grabbed her bracelet, yanking it off and transforming it into the blade she trusted with her life. She materialized on her clothing from her inventory, the motions automatic, and her mind already strategizing.
She pushed open the door to her room and stepped into the hallway, moving quickly but cautiously. The sounds of battle were louder now, the screams more intense. She navigated the corridors of the inn, her footsteps silent, and her senses heightened.
Ryn emerged into the open streets, the full extent of the devastation suddenly hit her. Buildings were ablaze, and the once serene city was now a war zone. Droppers and other players were engaged in fierce combat, their movements a blur of violence.
Ryn hastened her steps, her blade at the ready. She cut through the chaos, her focus on reaching the Council Chambers. She encountered pockets of resistance—players trying to fend off the Rogue attackers. She joined the fray where she could, but these players weren’t fighters, not like she was, and they were easily overwhelmed.
Finally, she reached the Chambers, where Kyle, and the others were waiting. They were battered but alive.
"What's the plan?" Ryn asked, her breath coming in short bursts from the exertion.
Elara spoke first, her eyes scanning the horizon. "We need to secure the area and protect the civilians. We can't let these rogues tear Yaris apart."
Kyle nodded. "We've also got to find out how they got in and what their endgame is."
Ryn tightened her grip on her sword. "Let's do this then.".
As Ryn and the others gathered, Lysandra and the other council members burst into the chambers. Without hesitation, Lysandra moved swiftly to a terminal that emerged from the floor. Her fingers danced over the controls with ease, and a loud ding echoed through the room. Suddenly, a blue glow enveloped the building, forming a protective shield that blocked rogue players from entering.
Droppers began to pour into the Council Chambers, their faces filled with dread. The urgency in the air was so thick it could be cut with a knife. They sought safety and a plan of action.
"They managed to easily get past the Military sector," one of the Droppers said, bewildered. "How did the rogues manage to breach it so effortlessly?"
Ryn moved towards the door, her mind racing, but Kyle grabbed her arm, stopping her. "Ryn, what's the plan?" he asked with concern
She paused, meeting his gaze with a look of frustration. "I don't have a plan," she admitted, shaking her head. "All I know is that we need to stop them before they cause any more destruction."
Kyle's expression hardened. "We can't just rush out there without a strategy. We need to understand how they got past our defenses."
Lysandra, having overheard their exchange, stepped forward. “There must be a breach somewhere."
Elara nodded in agreement. "Let's split into teams. Some of us can focus on defending key points while others investigate the breach."
Jax chimed in, his voice steady. "We should also try to capture one of the rogues alive. They might have information we can use."
Ryn took a deep breath, absorbing their suggestions. "Alright, here's the plan," she said, her voice gaining confidence. "Kyle, Elara, and I will head out to investigate the breach and capture a rogue. Jax, you and the others stay here to defend the Council Chambers and protect the civilians. Lysandra, can you coordinate the defenses and keep an eye on the terminal for any updates?"
Lysandra nodded. "Consider it done. Be careful out there."
Ryn tightened her grip on her sword, feeling its familiar weight reassuring her. "Let's move out," she said, leading Kyle and Elara towards the door. "We have a city to save."
They slipped out of the protective shield. The streets of Yaris were still chaotic, but the shield provided a small haven amidst the turmoil. Ryn led her team towards the Military sector, where they believed the breach had occurred.
As they moved through the city, they encountered more signs of battle—fallen players, both rogue and allied, and structures damaged by the ongoing conflict. The tension was thick in the air, and every shadow seemed to hold something waiting to jump out and attack.
When they reached the Military sector, the defenses were oddly quiet. Ryn's brow furrowed as she scanned the area. "This doesn't feel right," she muttered.
Elara pointed towards a heavily fortified gate that lay wide open. "There. That must be how they got in."
Kyle nodded. "But how did they get past the guards and the security systems?"
Ryn took a breath. "We need to find out. Stay sharp and be ready for anything."
They moved cautiously towards the gate, their weapons at the ready. As they entered the sector, they saw signs of a struggle—scorched marks from energy weapons, and fallen guards. The security systems had been expertly hacked, bypassed with a precision that suggested they weren’t dealing with something ordinary.
Suddenly, they heard a noise from behind a nearby structure. Ryn signaled for silence, and they crept forward, weapons drawn. They rounded the corner to find a rogue player, crouched over a terminal, working furiously.
Ryn acted quickly, lunging forward and pinning the rogue against the wall. "You're coming with us," she said coldly.
The rogue struggled, but Kyle and Elara quickly restrained them. "You have no idea what's coming," the rogue hissed, a twisted smile on their face.
Ryn's grip tightened. "Then why don't you enlighten us?"
The rogue chuckled, but before they could speak, a burst of static crackled through their comms. "All units, regroup at the Council Chambers," Lysandra's voice commanded. "We've found the source of the breach."
Ryn exchanged a glance with Kyle and Elara. "Let's get back. And bring our new friend with us."
As they made their way back to the Council Chambers, the rogue's words echoed in Ryn's mind. They didn't have all the answers yet, but they were getting closer.
They neared the council chambers, but Ryn stopped in her tracks. In the distance, out of the corner of her eye, she saw Jax crumpled against a wall. Panic surged through her, and she quickly turned to Kyle and Elara. "Go on without me," she urged. "I need to help Jax."
Without waiting for their response, Ryn sprinted towards Jax. She knelt beside him, trying to lift him up, but he shook his head weakly. "Ryn...don't," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "Save your strength..."
"Your body core is almost done for," Ryn insisted, pulling out a health item from her inventory, but before she could administer it, a voice from behind her made her freeze.
"Touch him, and it'll be the last thing you do."
Ryn turned slowly to see a tall figure cloaked in a black. The rogue Dropper's sword glowed a menacing orange, vibrating with intense energy. His eyes, cold and calculating, locked onto hers.
This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.
"Who are you?" Ryn demanded, positioning herself protectively in front of Jax.
The rogue Dropper smirked. "Name's Vex. And you're in my way."
Ryn tightened her grip on her weapon, the blade humming to life. "If you want him, you'll have to go through me first."
Vex laughed, a low, dangerous sound. "Oh, I was hoping you'd say that."
In a blur of motion, Vex lunged at Ryn. She parried his strike, their swords clashing with a shower of sparks. The force of the blow sent a shockwave through her arms, but she held her ground, determined not to let him through.
"You've got spirit," Vex taunted, circling her. "But you're outmatched."
"We'll see about that," Ryn shot back, launching a flurry of strikes at him. Vex deflected each one with ease, his movements were quicker than hers.
Ryn could feel the intensity of Vex's attacks. He was skilled, far more than any opponent she'd faced so far. Each clash of their swords sent vibrations through her entire body, and she could sense the raw power behind his strikes.
Vex's sword glowed brighter, and he unleashed a powerful attack that knocked Ryn off balance. She stumbled, her health bar dipping into the yellow. With a growl of determination, she flew into a one handed backflip, her palm scraping the ground with her sword locked tight in the other. Quickly, she spun around slashing her blade across his chest.
Vex staggered back, a look of surprise flashing across his face. "Impressive," he muttered, clutching his chest where her blade had struck. "But it's not enough."
He charged at her again, his attacks faster and more relentless. Ryn blocked and dodged as best as she could, but a vicious strike slipped through her defenses, landing a critical hit. Pain exploded through her, and she felt her body core's energy plummet.
Gritting her teeth, Ryn reached into her inventory and used a health core, feeling the restorative energy flood through her system. Her vision cleared, and she steadied herself, ready for the next round.
The battle raged on, with Ryn and Vex exchanging blows in a deadly dance. She could sense Jax's fading presence behind her, driving her to fight harder. She had to win—for him.
Finally, with a burst of speed and a well-timed strike, Ryn managed to disarm Vex. His sword clattered to the ground, and she held her blade to his throat, panting heavily.
"It's over," she said, her voice firm.
Vex smirked, even in defeat. "For now, perhaps. But this isn't the end."
Before Ryn could react, he pressed a button on his watch, and in an instant, he vanished into thin air and smoke.
Ryn collapsed to her knees, exhaustion washing over her. She turned back to Jax, his health still in the red. She quickly administered the health item, watching as his body core began to stabilize.
"You're going to be okay," she whispered, relief flooding through her.
Jax managed a weak smile. "Thanks, Ryn. I knew you wouldn't let me down." She helped him to his feet, supporting his weight as they made their way back.
Ryn and Jax finally made it back to the council chambers, their steps heavy with exhaustion. The large, ornate doors swung open, revealing a tense and anxious group of council members and fellow Droppers gathered around the central terminal. The air buzzed with nervous energy, the blue glow of the protective shield casting an eerie light over the room.
Lysandra stood at the terminal, a small rectangular device in her hand. The device, though advanced in design, was clearly no longer functional, its screen cracked and circuits exposed. Ryn's eyes immediately locked onto it, recognizing its significance.
"That's a Quantum Code," Ryn said, her voice steady despite the fatigue.
Lysandra nodded, her expression grim. "Yes, Ryn. This is how the Rogue Droppers hacked our military systems and breached Yaris."
Elara, standing nearby, added, "Quantum Codes are typically used for opening loot crates and chests, but I suppose a savvy engineer could upgrade one to perform more complex hacks."
Ryn moved closer, examining the device. "It makes sense. These codes can manipulate data at a fundamental level. If someone knew what they were doing, they could override security systems, disable defenses... essentially, take control."
Lysandra placed the device on the terminal, her brow furrowed in thought. "We underestimated their resourcefulness. And their knowledge."
One of the council members, a middle-aged man with a stern demeanor, checked the terminal. His fingers flew over the holographic keyboard as he accessed the security logs and reports. After a few moments, he looked up, his face etched with concern.
"After your fight with Vex, the other rogue players vanished as well. It’s as if they were never here," he reported, shaking his head in disbelief. "They must have used the Quantum Code to initiate a mass teleportation. Our systems show no traces of their presence now."
Ryn felt a surge of frustration. "So they got what they wanted and disappeared without a trace. We need to find out where they went and what their next move is."
Lysandra sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Indeed. But for now, we must fortify our defenses and ensure that something like this doesn't happen again. We need to be prepared if they attack again."
Elara nodded in agreement. "I'll start analyzing the Quantum Code's remnants. Maybe we can find a clue about where they might have gone. They can’t use this code again at least. Seems like the mass teleportation fried it."
Jax, leaning heavily on Ryn for support, spoke up. "We need to warn the other cities and regions. If the rogues can hack Yaris, they can hack anywhere."
Ryn helped Jax to a chair, then turned to the group. "We also need to make sure everyone here is safe. We can't let fear paralyze us. We have to stay vigilant."
Lysandra straightened."Agreed. We'll send out messages to the other councils immediately. Everyone will be on high alert. In the meantime, we'll bolster our defenses and continue to investigate this Quantum Code."
The room buzzed with activity as the council members and Droppers began to organize their next steps. Elara and a few tech-savvy Droppers gathered around the terminal to start their analysis, while others prepared messages for the surrounding cities and regions.
Ryn took a deep breath, her mind racing with thoughts she couldn’t shake. The Rogue Droppers had dealt a significant blow, but they had also shown their hand. With the right information and preparation, they could turn the tide.
"Ryn," Lysandra called, breaking her train of thought. "Take some time to rest. You've done more than enough for one day.."
Ryn nodded, knowing that Lysandra was right. She glanced at Jax, who was being attended to by a healer, and felt a wave of relief that he was safe. "I will. But if anything happens, anything at all, I want to be the first to know."
Lysandra gave her a reassuring smile. "Of course. Now, get some rest. We'll need your leadership and strength soon enough."
“I’m going to help the others for a bit but I’ll have comms open.”
Ryn and the others fanned out across Yaris, working tirelessly to assist the city's residents. The night was long, but their determination didn't waver as they helped anyone in need and extinguished the lingering fires. As Ryn doused the flames of a burning shop, she couldn't shake the thoughts swirling in her mind.
Why did those Droppers go rogue? It wasn't unheard of for players to attack each other—this was a virtual world, after all, where freedom was one of its defining features. But the notion of going through the grueling Dropper training just to attack innocent people seemed especially morbid.
As she moved through the streets, helping where she could, the images of the rogue Droppers' attack replayed in her mind. The sheer brutality of it all, the way they had bypassed Yaris' defenses with ease. It was clear they weren't just after a thrill or a quick kill—they were organized, methodical, and dangerously skilled.
Ryn paused for a moment, leaning against a wall to catch her breath. She watched as Kyle and Jax worked together to clear debris from a blocked alleyway, their faces set in determined lines, and Elara was nearby, tending to an injured player with a gentle touch.
"Why go rogue?" she muttered to herself, frustration bubbling up inside her. "Why attack cities and kill other players….is it just to get the best gear?"
Kyle, overhearing her, walked over and wiped the sweat from his brow. "It's a question I've been asking myself too, Ryn. It doesn't make any sense. But then again, some players get so caught up in the game, they lose sight of what's right and wrong."
Jax joined them, nodding in agreement. "I've seen it happen before. Some players become obsessed with power and status. They'll do anything to climb to the top, even if it means hurting others."
As they continued their patrol, Ryn's mind wandered back to the moment she first decided to become a Dropper. The training had been intense, pushing her to her limits. But she had persevered, driven by a desire to make a difference, to be a part of something greater.
The thought of others using that same training for such twisted purposes made her blood boil. She had to shake the thought and realize that not every player thinks like she does but still, it’s so careless.
By the time the sun began to rise, the fires were out, and the city had started to calm.
"We did good work tonight," Lysandra said, her voice filled with gratitude as she addressed the group. "But this is only the beginning.”
"Let's get some rest," Ryn suggested, her voice carrying the weight of the night's events. "We'll need all our strength."

Vex and his fellow Rogue Droppers suddenly materialized back at their base, a hidden underground bunker nestled within the Mountainous Region of Abos. The bunker, a relic from an era long gone, was shrouded in darkness, its corridors echoing with the distant drip of water and the hum of old machinery.
Vex tossed off his jacket, the fabric still warm from the earlier battle, and collapsed onto a worn, metal chair. He leaned back, his mind replaying the confrontation with Ryn. A smirk curled at the corner of his lips as he remembered the fire in her eyes and the way she wielded her sword. She was a worthy opponent, perhaps even more than he had anticipated.
With a sigh, he collapsed his nano-sword, the blade folding neatly back into the cuff that sat snug on his bicep. He felt the familiar weight settle against his arm, a constant reminder of the power he held. The adrenaline from the fight began to fade, replaced by a heavy fatigue that settled deep in his bones.
He glanced around the bunker, watching as his comrades dispersed, their faces masked with exhaustion and satisfaction. They had succeeded in their mission, causing chaos and instilling fear, but Vex knew this was just the beginning. There would be more battles, more opportunities to test his strength.
Slowly, he pushed himself up from the chair and made his way to his quarters. The room was sparse, furnished with only the essentials—a narrow bed, and a small desk. He clicked on his watch, removing his boots and armor, the pieces evaporated into digital pixels and went neatly back into his inventory. He fell onto the bed with a loud thud.
As he lay there, staring up at the cracked ceiling, his thoughts returned to Ryn. She was different from the others, driven by a fierce determination that intrigued him. He wondered what had brought her to Abos, what dreams and nightmares fueled her quest.
With a final, deep breath, Vex closed his eyes. The exhaustion from the night's events quickly took over, pulling him into a deep, dreamless sleep. The bunker around him remained silent, a temporary refuge for the rogues as they plotted their next move.
But even in sleep, Vex's mind was a storm of plans and possibilities. The game was far from over, and he knew that the next encounter with Ryn would be even more intense. As he drifted deeper into slumber, a single thought lingered in his mind: she would be ready, and so would he.
