Seven

Two days after the Rogue Dropper attack, Yaris was still a hive of activity as relief efforts continued. Ryn, Elara, Lysandra, and the other Droppers had been working tirelessly to help the citizens recover and rebuild.

Kyle and Jax, both visibly exhausted, stood before the virtual bulletin board in the Council Chambers. The holographic screen displayed various tasks and missions that needed urgent attention. Despite their fatigue, they decided to take on another request to end the day.

"One more, huh?" Kyle said, his voice filled with weariness as he scanned the board. "I guess we can manage that."

Jax nodded, his hand clapping Kyle on the shoulder. "Yeah, one more. We can do this. Let's see... How about this one? 'Deliver supplies to the west district.' Sounds simple enough."

Kyle nodded, appreciating the simplicity of the task. "Alright, let's do it."

The two of them set out, navigating the bustling streets of Yaris as they carried crates of supplies to the west end. The sun was just beginning to set, a warm, golden hue hung over the city. Despite their exhaustion, they worked efficiently, delivering the supplies and ensuring everything was in order.

Once their task was complete, Jax turned to Kyle with a tired smile. "How about we take a break? There's a field not too far from here. It'd be nice to relax for a bit."

Kyle agreed, and they made their way to the field. The vibrant flowers swayed gently in the breeze, their colors creating a serene and calming atmosphere. Jax and Kyle found a spot to sit, the soft grass cushioning them as they settled down.

Jax leaned back, his hands propped behind him as he gazed up at the sky. "You know, this place reminds me a bit of home," he said softly. "The open fields, the fresh air... it's nice."

Kyle glanced over at him, studying the way the fading light accentuated Jax's features. Jax was undeniably handsome, with his buff physique and short-cropped hair, but it was the gentle, caring nature beneath his machoness that Kyle admired most.

"Yeah, it is nice," Kyle replied, lying back on the grass and looking up. "It's almost... peaceful."

Jax turned his head to look at Kyle, a small smile playing on his lips. "It’s moments like these that make all the fighting worth it. We get to see the beauty that's still left in the world."

Kyle nodded, feeling a warmth spread through him. "You know, Jax, I've always admired how you handle everything. You're strong. It's... inspiring."

Jax chuckled softly, a hint of embarrassment in his tone. "Thanks, Kyle. I try my best. But honestly, having people like you around makes it easier. We're a team, right?"

"Right," Kyle agreed, turning his head to meet Jax's gaze. "We are a team."

They lay there in comfortable silence for a while, the only sounds being the rustling of the flowers and the distant hum of the city. Kyle felt a growing connection with Jax, a slow burn of affection that he couldn't ignore.

Eventually, Jax broke the silence. "You know, Kyle, you're pretty amazing yourself. You're always ready to help, and you've got this... determination about you. It's admirable."

Kyle felt his cheeks warm at the compliment. "Thanks, Jax. That means a lot, coming from you."

As the last light of day faded and the stars began to twinkle in the sky, they sat up, knowing it was time to head back. But the moment had solidified something between them—a bond that was growing.

The next morning, Kyle was abruptly awakened by a knock on his door. Groggy, he threw his legs over the bed and pressed his bare feet against the cool floor. His hair was a tousled mess, and he rubbed his eyes, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. Without thinking, he stumbled to the door and opened it.

Jax stood there, fully dressed and looking slightly flushed. His eyes widened as he took in the sight of Kyle standing there in nothing but his underwear. For a moment, Jax seemed at a loss for words, his face turning a deeper shade of red.

Kyle, still half-asleep, noticed the look on Jax's face. "What are you looking at?" he asked, his voice still thick with sleep. It took him a moment to realize his state of undress. "Huh…Oh!"

Embarrassment filled him, and he quickly reached for a nearby blanket to wrap around himself. "Sorry about that. I, uh, wasn't expecting company this early."

Jax cleared his throat, trying to compose himself. "No worries, Kyle. I, um, just wanted to ask if you’d like to be my plus one for a get-together tonight at the town square."

Kyle blinked, his grogginess quickly giving way to surprise and a hint of excitement. "A get-together? At the town square?"

"Yeah," Jax said, his voice a bit steadier now. "It's a small celebration to lift everyone's spirits after everything that's happened. I thought it might be fun. And... I'd like you to be there with me."

Kyle felt warmth spread through him at the invitation. "Sure, Jax. I'd love to go with you."

Jax's face lit up with a relieved smile. "Great! It starts at seven. I'll swing by your room to get you."

"Sounds good," Kyle replied, still holding the blanket around himself. "I'll, uh, make sure to be dressed this time."

Jax chuckled, the tension between them easing. "Looking forward to it. See you tonight, Kyle."

With that, Jax turned and walked down the hallway, leaving Kyle standing in his doorway. Kyle watched him go, a smile tugging at his lips. He couldn't help but feel a flutter of anticipation for the evening ahead.

As he closed the door and started getting ready for the day, Kyle's mind was abuzz with thoughts of the get-together. It wasn't just the prospect of a night out that excited him; it was the chance to spend more time with Jax, to deepen the connection they had started to forge.

The day passed by in a blur of activities and preparations. Kyle found himself thinking about Jax often, replaying their conversations and imagining what the evening might bring. By the time the sun began to set, he was more than ready.

He took extra care in choosing his outfit, wanting to look his best for the occasion. He opted for a simple but stylish shirt and pants, something comfortable yet presentable. After a quick glance in the mirror to ensure everything was in place, he made his way to the door.

Just as he was about to step out, there was a knock. He opened the door to find Jax standing there, looking as handsome as ever in a casual yet neat outfit. Jax's eyes lit up when he saw Kyle.

"You look great," Jax said, his voice warm.

"So do you," Kyle replied, feeling a rush of anticipation..

They made their way to the town square together, their steps in sync as they talked and laughed. The evening air was filled with the sounds of music and chatter, the town square bustling with life and energy.

As they arrived, Kyle couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and happiness. He was glad to be there, glad to be with Jax. The night promised to be one of fun and connection, a chance to relax and enjoy each other's company in the midst of all the chaos.

The town square filled with the sounds of music and laughter, Ryn and Elara made their way through the crowd, eventually spotting Kyle and Jax. They approached them, weaving between groups of chatting players and colorful decorations.

Ryn struck up a conversation, her voice light and cheerful. "It's nice to have a night where we don't have our swords drawn," she said, smiling. "Not worrying about the state of my Body Core or stressing over inventory management."

Elara nodded in agreement. "Definitely. It's a much-needed break after everything that's happened."

As they talked, Ryn noticed Kyle's eyes subtly drifting towards Jax, who was standing nearby with Elara. A soft smile spread across Kyle's face, a look of quiet admiration and contentment.

Curious, Ryn leaned in closer to Kyle and asked in a teasing tone, "So, do you like Jax?"

Kyle was taken aback by the question, a flush creeping up his neck. He looked at Ryn, then back at Jax, who was laughing at something Elara had said. "I...I don't know," he admitted, his voice unsure. "Maybe I do? It's too soon to tell, but...I feel something. And I think he does too."

Ryn's expression softened, and she placed a reassuring hand on Kyle's shoulder. "It's okay not to have all the answers right now. Just take things one step at a time. It's clear you two have a connection, and that's a great start."

Kyle nodded, appreciating her words. "Thanks, Ryn. I guess we'll see how things go."

Ryn gave him an encouraging smile. "Exactly. Enjoy the night, Kyle. You deserve it."

Ryn turned her attention back to the group, joining in the conversation with Elara and Jax. Kyle took a deep breath, feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement. He couldn't deny the growing bond he felt with Jax, and for the first time in a long while, he felt hopeful about what the future might bring.

Tonight, they allowed themselves to relax, to enjoy each other's company, and to let the weight of their responsibilities lift, even if just for a little while. As Kyle glanced at Jax, he couldn't help but smile, feeling anticipation for whatever might come next.
