Kyle and Aiden made their way towards Nyon, the landscape around them slowly transforming from desolate wilderness to signs of emerging civilization. The journey gave them ample time to get to know each other better, sharing stories and experiences as they walked.

Kyle glanced at Aiden, "I don't mean to be insensitive," Kyle began cautiously, "but what happened to you?"

Aiden shook his head, signaling that Kyle's curiosity was not out of place. He took a deep breath before answering. "I was attacked by a boss Waste," he said, his voice steady. "It came out of nowhere, faster and stronger than any I'd seen before. I fought as hard as I could, but it tore through my health. I made it out with just one health point left in my body core."

Kyle's eyes widened. "That's incredible," he said. "It must have been terrifying. How did you manage to kill it with so little health left?"

Aiden shrugged, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Desperation can be a powerful motivator. I just kept telling myself that if I went down, I'd take it with me. And somehow, it worked."

Kyle nodded, impressed by Aiden. "Have you ever been to Nyon before?" he asked, changing the subject slightly.

Aiden shook his head. "No, I've heard of it, but I've never made it out that far. I was always too busy with other missions or caught up in the chaos of the wilds. This will be my first time."

Kyle smiled. "Hopefully we’ll both find what we’re looking for here."

By the time they reached the outskirts of Nyon, the sun was beginning to set over the city. It was much different from the wilderness that they just came from, and oddly, Kyle felt at home. The towers rose high against the sky, and the distant sound of bustling life reached their ears.

Kyle turned to Aiden. "Welcome to Nyon," he said. "Let's see what this city has in store for us."

Together, they stepped forward, Nyon outstretching before them.

Ryn stood in the council chambers, her thoughts still lingering on the uncertainty surrounding her friends. The council members moved about, discussing various matters, but Ryn's focus was on the message that had just come through on her watch.

"Players of Abos. Head to a council chamber in one of the cities and claim your new gear! Those who claim will have their watch swapped out for a new sleek ear cuff. New styles for the ear cuff can be found in shops and throughout the world."

Curiosity piqued, Ryn moved to the mail terminal, a sleek console that seamlessly rose from the floor. She tapped on the screen, and a small compartment opened, revealing the ear cuff. It was a delicate yet sturdy piece of technology, designed to fit snugly around the ear. She picked it up and examined it, noting its intricate design and the subtle glow that indicated its activation.

With a deep breath, Ryn removed her watch, watching as it disintegrated into pixels, leaving her wrist bare. She then carefully placed the ear cuff on, feeling it adjust to fit perfectly. The moment it clicked into place, a surge of information flowed through her, and a holographic globe sprang to life around her, enveloping her in a sphere of light.

Screens materialized within the globe, displaying her inventory, a more detailed world map, missions, outfits, skills, and various other options. The interface was far more advanced than the watch, offering a more immersive experience.

"This is incredible," Ryn muttered to herself, scrolling through the different screens with a touch. The inventory screen was now categorized, making it easier to find and manage items. The world map was expansive, showing not just the immediate area but detailed regions she had yet to explore. Missions were color-coded based on priority and difficulty, and there were new outfit options that she could customize.

Jess approached her with a smile. "How do you like the new gear?" she asked.

"It's amazing," Ryn replied, still marveling at the holographic displays. "It's like having the entire world at my fingertips."

Jess nodded. "The ear cuff is designed to enhance your experience and make navigation and management more efficient. Plus, it frees up your wrist," she added with a chuckle.

Ryn grinned. This will definitely help."

Jess patted her on the shoulder. " If you'll excuse me, I have some council matters to attend to. Take care, and good luck with your missions."

As Jess walked away, Ryn continued to explore the features of her new ear cuff. She could see real-time updates on her health and body core status, detailed analytics of her skills and abilities, and even a communication panel that allowed her to send messages and connect with other players.

Despite the overwhelming amount of information, the interface was intuitive, and Ryn quickly adapted to it. She felt more connected to the world than ever before, and the possibilities seemed endless.

"Time to put this to good use," she said. She touched the mission screen, selecting her next objective. With a final glance around the council chambers, she stepped out into Nyon.

Ryn stepped just outside the door, almost colliding with Kyle. Her eyes widened in shock, and without a second thought, she pulled him into a tight hug, relief flooding through her.

"Kyle! You're alive!" she exclaimed, her voice trembling with emotion. She pulled back slightly to look at him, her hands still on his shoulders.

Kyle's face showed a mixture of exhaustion and sorrow. "Yeah, I'm here," he said, his voice subdued. "But I don't know anything about the others. I've been trying to reach them, but...nothing."

Ryn's heart sank. "It's okay, we'll find them," she reassured him, giving his shoulder a comforting squeeze. "I just got the message about the new device. You should grab yours too. It's a game-changer."

Kyle nodded, glancing at the council chambers behind her. "I was about to get it. I thought it might help."

"It will," Ryn said. "Meet me back here once you have it. We have a lot to discuss."

Kyle managed a small smile. "Alright, I'll be quick." He turned to head into the chambers, pausing to look back at her. "I'm glad you're okay, Ryn."

She smiled back, though the worry for their friends still weighed heavily on her. "You too, Kyle. See you soon."

Kyle disappeared into the chambers andRyn took a deep breath and stepped outside. She couldn't shake the feeling of unease about Jax and Elara, but having Kyle back gave her a sense of calm. They would regroup, gather their strength, and continue their search.

Determined to make the most of this brief moment of respite, Ryn found a bench nearby and sat down, accessing her cuff. The holographic globe appeared around her, and she began to scroll through the updated mission logs and maps.

Minutes later, Kyle emerged from the council chambers, his own ear cuff in place. He joined Ryn on the bench, his expression more focused now that he had the device. "This thing is amazing," he said, tapping his ear cuff. "It's like a whole new level of control."

Ryn nodded. "It is. And we'll need every advantage we can get."

Ryn and Kyle walked side by side down the busy streets. The city's vibrancy was much different than Yaris. Neon lights and holographic displays illuminated their path, casting a kaleidoscope of colors on their faces. The air was filled with the hum of activity, a blend of laughter, conversation, and the occasional hum of a passing vehicle.

For a while, they walked in silence, each lost in their thoughts. Ryn finally broke the quiet, glancing at Kyle. "Why did you leave Aiden behind?"

Kyle shrugged, looking ahead. "Aiden didn't seem like he wanted to hang out once we got to the city. He said something about meeting up with some friends.”

Ryn sighed. "So, it's just us two then."

They continued walking, the city's liveliness almost overwhelming. They passed by a large holographic sign on the side of a building, advertising a concert in the town square later in the day. The animated display showed a popular in-game artist, their name flashing with bright, enticing colors.

Ryn took a breath, stopping to look at the sign. "Nyon feels like a totally different place, doesn't it? Like they don't have a clue what's outside their walls."

Kyle followed her gaze, his expression thoughtful. "Yeah, it's surreal. It's like an oasis of normalcy in the middle of chaos."

"But if it brings morale up, then I'm all for it. People need something to hold on to, especially now."

They resumed their walk, the sign lingering in their minds. The streets led them past cafes, shops, and bustling markets. The contrast between Nyon and the outside world was almost unsettling. Yet, she understood the necessity of such places, the need for hope and distraction in a world filled with danger.

People start to gather for the concert. On large holographic screens is promotional material for the singer, Aurelia, dancing on different stages and singing her heart out. The vibrant visuals and upbeat music start to draw in the crowd.

Ryn nudges Kyle, who seems lost in thought. "Come on, Kyle," she says with a smile, "Let’s join."

Kyle sighs, running a hand through his hair. "I just feel guilty, Ryn. We're here, while Jax and Elara are out there somewhere. We should be looking for them."

Ryn places a hand on his shoulder. "I get it, Kyle. I really do. But we deserve a break.”

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Kyle looks at her, his expression softening slightly. "I know you're right. It's just hard not to feel useless."

"I know," Ryn says, squeezing his shoulder gently. "But sometimes, we need to take a moment for ourselves, too. If we run ourselves ragged, we won't be any good to them when we do find them."

He nods, taking a deep breath. "You're right. Let's try to enjoy this then. For now."

As the sun begins to set, the holographic screens switch to a countdown, and the excitement in the air grows. The crowd cheers in anticipation, and Ryn and Kyle find themselves caught up in the energy. The countdown hits zero, and the stage lights up, revealing Aurelia in all her glory.

Her long red hair flows in the wind, her sharp winged eyeliner accentuating her striking features. She wears a sleek, futuristic outfit that shimmers under the stage lights. As the music starts, she grabs the microphone and begins to sing.

The crowd erupts in applause, and Ryn and Kyle can't help but be swept up in the moment. For a little while, they let go of their worries and lose themselves in the music, allowing the rhythm to take over their bodies.

Aurelia moves with confidence, and her performance is a blend of high-energy dancing and near flawless vocals. The holographic effects around her add an otherworldly feel to the show. Ryn feels the music pulsating through her, the crowd is shoulder to shoulder, their sweaty bodies rubbing against each other, but she doesn’t care. Ryn glances at Kyle, seeing a hint of a smile on his face.

Suddenly, there's a loud bang that reverberates through the air, and the music comes to an abrupt halt. Screams echo in the distance, a wave of panic washing over the crowd. Something massive is stomping, its heavy footsteps shaking the ground and growing louder as it approaches.

The crowd begins to scatter, people running in all directions, trying to get away from the impending danger. Ryn and Kyle push through the fleeing masses, trying to get a better look.

A towering boss Waste is heading straight for the crowd. Its grotesque body is even more menacing in the flickering lights of the concert stage. Unlike the other bosses they’ve encountered, this one seems different, more powerful, and almost...human.

Ryn yanks her bracelet off, and it extends into her nano-sword. Kyle follows suit, grabbing his carabiner and transforming it into his blade. They exchange a glance, ready to fight. But as they study the Waste, Ryn's eyes widen in shock.

Embedded within the monster, she can see Elara. Her friend's unconscious body is partly fused with the creature, her face visible through the corrupted mass. Ryn’s heart sinks as the name of the boss Waste pops up above its head: "Elara, Corrupted Vanguard."

The realization hits them both hard. Elara isn't just trapped inside this thing; she has become a part of it, transformed into a nightmarish entity. The Waste's body is a twisted mass of flesh and metal, with Elara's form at its core, as if she is both controlling and being controlled by it.

"Elara!" Ryn screams, hoping to reach her friend, but there's no response. The corrupted Elara raises one of its massive arms, a glowing weapon forming from its hand, and swings it down at the crowd. People scream and scatter, but Ryn and Kyle stand their ground, ready to face their mutated friend.

"We have to save her," Kyle says, his voice filled with urgency. "We have to find a way to get her out of that thing."

The Waste, now fully aware of their presence, roars and charges at them. Ryn and Kyle brace themselves.

Aurelia slowly makes her way up beside them. She grabs her belt buckle, which extends into the hilt of her nano-sword, then yanks it off. Her belt flings outward and comes together with a metallic clang, transforming into a sleek blade. She pins back her thick red hair with a grin. "You ready for a fight?"

Ryn and Kyle nod. In the distance, other Droppers are fighting against Elara's corrupted form, but they're being easily wiped out. The power of the Corrupted Vanguard is overwhelming, and the Droppers' efforts seem futile. Bodies hit the ground, devirtualizing into pixels, leaving only the grim reality of the foe before them.

Aurelia glances at the scene, her expression darkening. "We’ll need to be quick," she says.

The trio charges forward, their swords gleaming in the light. The corrupted Elara roars, its voice a mixture of human and machine, and swings its massive arm at them. Ryn, Kyle, and Aurelia dodge to the side, narrowly avoiding the devastating blow.

Aurelia is the first to counterattack. She swings her sword with expert precision, aiming for the joints of the creature. Sparks fly as her blade clashes against the metal and corrupted flesh. Kyle uses his strength to his advantage, delivering powerful blows that make the creature stagger.

But the corrupted Elara is savage. It fights back with a fury that matches its disgusting appearance, each attack stronger than the last. The trio is forced to stay on their toes, constantly moving and adjusting their strategies to stay ahead of the beast.

"Elara, if you can hear us, fight it!" Ryn yells, hoping that some part of their friend is still in there, capable of resisting the corruption.

The creature pauses for a split second, its eyes flickering with a faint glimmer of recognition. But then it roars again, the corruption surging back.

Aurelia calls out, "We need to weaken it, disrupt the corruption somehow!"

Kyle, breathing heavily, nods. "Maybe if we can get close enough to the core...to Elara..."

They double their efforts, coordinating their attacks. Ryn and Kyle draw the creature's attention, dodging and weaving around its strikes, while Aurelia looks for an opportunity to attack its core.

Finally, she sees her chance. With a burst of speed, Aurelia darts in, her sword aimed at the glowing core where Elara's form is most visible. She plunges her blade into the heart of the corruption, and the creature lets out an ear-piercing scream.

The corrupted Elara thrashes wildly, and for a moment, it seems like it might break apart. But then, in a horrifying twist, the corruption begins to mutate, the monster growing even more powerful.

Ryn, Kyle, and Aurelia are forced back, their eyes wide with shock and horror.

"We have to keep going!" Ryn yells out.

The newly mutated creature charges at them and

grabs Ryn, throwing her violently against the ground. She rolls across the concrete, her health dropping rapidly and her body core severely depleted. Kyle sprints to her side. With a quick glide of his finger over his ear cuff, he accesses his inventory. He clicks on a health core, which materializes in his hand, and swiftly sticks the needle into Ryn's arm. Her strength begins to return, her health steadily rising.

Ryn pushes herself up and sighs. "I've been so busy thinking about other things that I haven't used my points to unlock new skills," she admits, frustration in her voice.

Kyle nods, glancing at the creature, which is momentarily distracted by Aurelia's relentless attacks. "Then do it now," he urges. "We need every advantage we can get."

Ryn takes a deep breath and focuses. She accesses her ear cuff, navigating to her skill tree. Points she'd accumulated from countless battles and quests lay unused, waiting to be allocated. She quickly begins to unlock new skills, her mind racing through the options.

"Okay," she mutters to herself, "let's do this."

Ryn selects a series of new abilities: Enhanced Reflexes, which would allow her to dodge and counterattack more effectively; Blade Fury, a powerful combo attack that could deal significant damage; and Energy Shield, a defensive skill that would create a protective barrier around her for a short period.

As she activates the skills, she feels a surge of power course through her. Her body feels lighter, her mind sharper, and her resolve stronger.

"I'm ready!”

Kyle grins, giving her a nod. "Then let's take this thing down."

The creature turns its attention back to them with a roar. Ryn and Kyle charge forward, their movements now synchronized.

Aurelia, noticing the change in Ryn's demeanor, calls out, "What's the plan?"

Ryn, her voice steady and confident, responds, "We go all out. I'll keep it distracted. Kyle, you focus on weakening its defenses. Aurelia, aim for the core again when you see an opening."

Ryn's Enhanced Reflexes allow her to dodge the creature's massive swings with ease. She counters with Blade Fury, her sword a blur as it lands multiple hits in quick succession. Sparks fly, and the creature howls in pain. Each blow she lands weakens the creature further, its movements growing slower.

Aurelia waits for the perfect moment. When the creature staggers from one of Kyle's strikes, she darts in, her sword aimed at the core once more. Her blade finds its mark, and the creature lets out an ear-splitting scream.

The creature, now more desperate and enraged, begins to mutate again. The corruption pulses through it, and it lashes out with ferocity.

Ryn, her Energy Shield activated, blocks a devastating blow that would have otherwise incapacitated her. She holds her ground, unwavering. "We can do this," she yells. "We just need to hold on a little longer!"

The trio, battered but unbroken, continues their assault. Ryn advances, her blade flashing in a flurry of movements that keep the creature off balance. Each strike draws its attention away from Aurelia, who watches for the perfect moment.

“Now!” Ryn screams out.

With a powerful leap, Aurelia drives her sword into the Waste's core for the last time. The monster lets out a guttural scream, writhing in pain as the corruption begins to untangle and dissolve.

The monster collapses and Elara's body falls to the ground, freed from the corruption. Ryn and Kyle sprint to her side. Ryn scoops Elara into her arms, scanning her friend's body. Her body core is corrupted, the damage beyond repair. Ryn's heart sinks as she realizes there's no saving her.

Elara, with a faint smile, looks up at Ryn and Kyle. "Thank you for being my friends," she whispers, her voice weak but sincere.

“We’ll always be friends…” Kyle takes Elara’s hand, squeezing it tightly.

Seconds later she devirtualizes, her in-game body still cradled in Ryn's arms.

Kyle takes a deep breath, trying to keep his emotions in check. "Elara will come back," he says."She'll respawn."

Ryn shakes her head, her eyes filled with sorrow. "But not in our server. She'll have to start from scratch somewhere else." Ryn’s voice breaks, her eyes filled with unblinked tears.

The weight of the loss settles over them. Kyle clenches his fists, frustration and sadness mingling in his expression. "This isn't fair," he mutters. "We should have been able to save her."

Ryn places a hand on his shoulder, trying to offer some comfort. "We did everything we could," she says softly. "Elara knew the risks, just like all of us. She wouldn't want us to give up."

Aurelia, having watched the scene unfold, steps forward. "I’m so sorry," she says, her voice steady but respectful. "Can I see her?”

Ryn nods, letting Elara down softly on the ground. Aurelia scans her body then clicks a few buttons on her HUD. Elara’s body core appears in her hand. “Here,” She says. “I’m sure she’d want you to have it.” She hands it to Kyle and he puts it safely in his inventory.

“Thank you.” He says, sniffing through tears.

Ryn, Kyle, and Aurelia make their way back to the council chambers, the weight of recent events heavy on their shoulders. The streets of Nyon, bustling with activity earlier, are now quieter, the aftermath of the battle with the Waste evident in the subdued atmosphere.

Inside the council chambers, they find a place to relax and breathe for a second. Ryn, sensing the tension, turns to Aurelia. "You have a nano-sword so obviously you were a Dropper, what happened?" she asks, her curiosity piqued.

Aurelia shrugs, a hint of a smile on her lips. "I just wanted a change of scenery," she says casually. "But, I’ve been thinking of coming back for a while now. The singing gig is fun but there’s no action."

Ryn nods, appreciating Aurelia's honesty. "Well, we're glad to have you back."

As they settle in, Kyle hangs back, leaning against the wall. His expression is somber, his thoughts clearly troubled. Ryn notices and walks over to him."What's on your mind?" she asks gently.

Kyle looks at her, his eyes filled with worry. "Do you think the same thing happened to Jax?" he asks, his voice barely a whisper.

Ryn shakes her head firmly. "No, I don't think so," she says with conviction. "We'll find him, Kyle."

Kyle takes a deep breath, trying to steady his emotions. "I hope you're right."

Ryn places a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "For now, we need to report to Jess and see if there's anything we can do after the disaster the Waste caused," she says. "Then we need to get some rest."

Kyle nods, appreciating her support. "Okay, let's go find Jess."
