Terribly loud alarms rang out from all around the imperial camp.
I felt a tug at my soul and an orange glow enveloped me.
“Igni! Airis and I are being attacked, we need help!”
My priestess’ voice called in my mind for help and I set off for her location immediately, flying out of the small tent where my priestess currently resided.
I soared above the camp, closing the distance between us in a minute. My body had been growing well in the last few weeks, having been stunted when she went away shortly after my rebirth.
Being in such close proximity to my priestess had supplied me with abundant power!
“What in the hells is that thing? Some giant firefly?”
One of the attackers insulted me as soon as I arrived.
You dare call me something so insignificant!?
I began preparing a barrage of magick spells when the Empress’ sword surged with power and she shouted something weird at the men and charged forward.
It was already too late, though. My spells started firing off one after another.
The Empress stopped her charge and dived out of the way. She retreated to a safe place as my hail of fire rained down upon the enemy.

Fireblast! Fireblast! Fireblast! Ahhahahaha!
A storm of fire and smoke blanketed the attackers. I laughed as they were reduced to nothing but dust. After all this time not being able to do anything, I had finally contributed to the imperial war effort!
A sense of ease settled in my soul now that I could confidently tell my creator I was fulfilling my intended role.
I fluttered down and perched atop my priestess’ staff.
Behold my awesome might! Praise me!
My priestess gently stroked the feathers on my head, “You did a great job. Thank you for coming as quick as you could.”
These poor excuses for assassins were nothing but a trifle! You are quite welcome, my priestess.
“Igni!” the Empress called out to me, pausing and looking back at the scorched bodies, “Oooh, that makes so much more sense.”
She dusted herself off and started talking to some people who’d rushed over.
It soon became quite loud around us.
Many soldiers had crowded around and some were shouting at the others.
My priestess’ retainers, the black-haired one and the silver-haired one, arrived together. Their questions were uninteresting and repetitive of what the other soldiers had already asked.
I was content with my victory scratches and praise.
Once everything had been sorted out so that we could leave, we set off.
I changed perches to rest on the Empress’ arm, tightly wrapping my talons around her bracers. I enjoyed the feeling the metal her armor was made from gave me.
The Empress fawned over me, stroking my feathers gently and rhythmically. I soon dozed off, stirring only when we arrived at the Empress’ tent—moderately bigger than my priestess’ but still quite small—and I was forced to find a new place to rest.
For some reason, my priestess was fussing over the Empress. She demanded that the Empress drink plenty of water and get some rest.
The Empress unequipped the light armor she’d been wearing and sat at the edge of her bed. My priestess tried to hand the Empress a cup of water, but the Empress placed it on a small table to the side. She reached out and grabbed my priestess, pulling her to the bed.
“A-Airis!? What’re you doing?” she cried out.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m not doing anything.” the Empress replied coolly, reaching a hand around my priestess’ waist. Her hand moved up the priestess’ back, under her shirt.
“Hey! I have to—”
The Empress pulled my priestess in for a kiss, interrupting her mid-sentence.
… I should go.
I exited the tent as gracefully as I could so as to not disturb my two keepers, silently congratulating my priestess—she had been complaining about not being able to have any private time with the Empress recently.
