3. Dumb Jokes

I looked towards the navigator and pilot area.

"Danielle have you found a space station for us to safely jump to?" I asked her my eyes on the glass bubble over her station.

However I did not hear her voice coming from it when she did reply. It came out of the speakers around the bridge.

"Aye captain I have found a station called Mishpah it is deep inside vampiric territory and only a short jump from here.”

I tilted my head still trying to spot the speakers but I failed.

“Very good, set course for Mishpah space station.” I said to the navigator and pilot.

I turned my attention back to the glass window I noticed at the edges there were corners indicating that there was something behind it then I realised what I was looking at was not a window but was in fact a lot of monitors placed together in such a way to create a giant screen that was covering a metal wall to make it look like there was only glass between me and open space.

I focused my attention back on the screen as the ship’s nose came to face a star and began to accelerate towards it I looked down at the little screen attached to my chair and pressed the communications button and typed in Johnathan Ardinton the window closed and twenty seconds later his face appeared on the screen.

“What! I am a little busy here” he shouted at me.

I flinched but straightened my back and stared down at the little screen.

“This is Michelle leader of the 12 survivors that came aboard my ship but not the 3 that took the other one, they have refused to follow me. I rang you to inform you that we are off the station and are preparing to engage our quantum drive.”

I saw his body language relax a little bit and he nodded his head.

“Good, glad to hear it but that other ship won't be able to engage there quantum drive if they are not with a clan so make sure they use your quantum tunnel to escape.”

There was an explosion on his bridge in the background then his transmission ended abruptly and I turned to look at my communications officer. She was furiously pushing buttons on the glass screen of her console before looking up and turning to face me.

“His ship’s communications are gone.. I can’t get him back on the screen.” she said.

Letting the sentence hang in the air she turned back to her console slowly before her fingers began to push the buttons on the glass screen again.

“Wait i have an incoming communication from one of the other ships, i’ll send it to your screen.” she said.

I looked down at my screen as a woman appeared on the screen she looked like she was sitting in the captain's chair on a ships bridge.

“Lady Michelle, our Lord and clan elder has been lost, we have also lost our clan affiliation and can not engage our quantum drive until we are accepted into a new clan. We are now unable to continue this battle, we are also carrying out our lord's last orders, we are attempting to escape this battle field and have begun our emergency quick maneuvers to slip in behind you. The station has been set to self destruct in three minutes. We will be on you in less than one minute, we request permission to enter your quantum tunnel with you as we are the only two surviving battle cruisers left of the Ardinton fleet. We must survive this battle and report our clans defeat.”

I could see the nervousness on her face so I quickly nodded my head.

“Permission granted, you and your crew may join my clan if you are willing to swear an oath to me.”

I turned to look at my pilot.

“Pilot, engage the quantum drive now we are leaving!” I declared loudly.

I then turned to the communications officer but before I could say anything laser fire flew past the front of our ship a couple of shots hitting what appeared to be our shields as they glowed where they were hit for a second before vanishing.

“Tell that little bitch who refuses to follow us that if they want to get out of here they better follow us this time or they will be left... Ah fuck it, just tell them they have permission to enter our quantum tunnel or stay here to die.” I said as the woman on my screen shook her head.

"We cant join a new clan for atleast a year of leaving our last one, the system wont allow it."

I nodded my head and watched her vanished from the screen as she ended the call. I did notice the same blue glow of her own shields protecting her ship in the background. I focused on my ship's giant screen.

“captain engaging the quantum drive in 5...4...3...2...1… quantum drive engaged!”

"Phoebe shouted just before the ship lurched beneath my feet.

“shit, should I have been able to feel that?” I couldn’t resist asking out loud.

“No Captain, it seems this ship was in that hanger for repairs for a reason.”

I turned my head trying to spot the person that had spoken but couldn’t see them anywhere, I was about to ask who said that but before I could I heard.

“Captain the small ship and the two battle cruisers have made it into our quantum tunnel and are trailing behind us. However, due to my low navigation skill it is uncertain how long it will take us to reach our destination.” From the navigation officer.

I nodded starting to feel a little more relaxed. I stood up from my seat.

“Alright call me if anything comes up” I told them.

I then turned and walked out the bridge and into officers quarters spotting the captains hatch. I decided now was a good a time as any to see what my new quarters looked like. As I approached it the hatch once again disintegrated revealing a staircase down to a room. I descended into a room that was empty except for a bed in the centre of the room. There was two separate rooms for the toilet and shower. The shower was interesting as it was an entire room with a glass panel on the wall next to the door slightly bigger than my hand. When I inspected it a window displaying the options to turn on the shower along with some settings to adjust it to the temperature and settings that I would best enjoy turned on. I smiled softly and exited the shower room back into the bedroom. I walked over to the bed and sat down on the side of it. I was there for a few seconds before a screen appeared in the middle of the room displaying logs and info on the ship. I smiled softly as I began to read the screen. The ship's logs contained all the information about the repairs the ship was meant to go through and the ones it had gone through, there was nothing else.

However, anything that had happened to the ship before now. Appeared to have been wiped clean. I could enter a new log if I wanted to. I sighed as I stood up ignoring the screen.

“How the hell did all this happen?” I mumbled.

“I am sure that life was real…” I frowned as I turned to look around the room slowly.

“If that life was not real then why did I die at the end of it?” I crossed the room back to the hatch.

“Alright next destination earth, let’s find out for sure!”

I climbed out of my room back into the hallway and quickly walked back onto the bridge.

“Captain on the bridge” Danielle yelled.

I grinned as I looked at her bubble as I walked over to it and began tapping on the roof of it.

“Danielle, can I have a word with you?” The bubble rotated then slid back towards the front of the ship exposing Danielle sitting in her chair as she looked up at me.

“Yes, Captain. What can I do for you?” she asked me as I looked at the monitors behind her curiously.

"Where is everyone else?" I asked after I looked around the empty bridge.

Her head popped up as she looked around as well.

"Oh, Phoebe, told me they were all heading to the kitchen as there was nothing for them to do here, she said they were starving, I am starving too but I can’t go, I have to finish these calculations, the only problem is there so beyond me…” she trailed off as she watched the monitors.

“Hey, uh, would you be able to find a specific planet that I only have a brief description and name of? I also know a little bit about the solar system if that helps.” I asked as I looked away from the monitors that were starting to give me a headache.

“Yea, given enough time and information on the planet. I think I could find one, why?” I turned to look down into her eyes.

“Because I want to find out exactly how false our memories are meant to be.”

she suddenly grinned and nodded her head.

“What planet am I looking for?”

I smiled. “Earth, it’s blue and green and occasionally white from the clouds.”

I pointed at the bank of monitors.

“So can you find it?”

Danielle grinned and then nodded.

“Yes, I know that planet, I apparently did not live on that planet either.”

We both laughed at the dumb joke.
