CHAPTER: 3 "Work of a supernatural"
As soon as my ears were covered by Blue's palms, the abnormalities happening to my body stopped, and my thinking ability returned to normal.
"Oh, the great master of imagination, ruler of the mind, king of Nightmares and Paradise. The Dream. Can you please stop toying with the spirit I am assigned to?" Blue requested, her tone exuding confidence and maturity, as she maintained her hold over my ears.
"Blue, you've become rather disrespectful over these past millennia." That monstrosity complained before turning into a young boy around the age of 7. His cheeks were puffed so hard that they looked more like red balloons.
"You are in no position to say that to me. Weren't you the one who assigned me to this task after all? I am just trying to do my best to complete the work you have dumped to me." She complained while keeping a tough front. Maybe Blue and Dream just weren't on good terms, I hypothesized, but seeing them conversing their squabbles were more like brother and sister type.
"Gasp!" The little Dream exclaimed. "What happened to the sweet little Blue I once knew? What have you done to her?"
It was funny seeing an elementary school-aged kid call a girl who looked twice his age sweet and little.
Awwww... Blue isn't he adorable. Were my first thought before a piece of information got completely processed dawning upon me a realization.
"Wait!!! Blue, did this kid just say a millennia? It can't be, right? Or are you perhaps a lolib......" I lost composure remembering the completely nonsensical age number that Dream revealed.
Suddenly, Blue's expression darkened, her warning cutting through the air with a heavy tone. "Grey Wolff, utter one more word and the protection I am providing you will be gone."
These words spoken by her seemed no joke. I nodded at her rapidly, scared of what might happen if I didn't have her protection. That was quiet a safe, hmmm. That kid, how does he look? As I moved my eyes from Dream, the face he wore couldn't be remembered anymore, it was a weird phenomenon and a scary one at that too.
Blue continued, but this time with a smile, a bright and irritated smile. "Oh! And this boy here is Dream. He is the compilation of things that are related to goals we believe in, mashed into a single entity. This little kid-like form is due to the beliefs humans have about dreams being a luxury only kids can obtain. Though, I wonder sometimes, did he become brain-dead because of the belief or if the belief was formed because he is brain-dead." She blatantly copied a JJK line, with no hesitation at that.
'Are you sure we won't get a copyright claim?' I contemplated within yet, I just went with the flow. I stepped closer to Dream and bowed with hands clasped tightly, it was very weird bowing towards someone who looked way younger than you.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
"Ahem. Hello, Mr. Dream. Nice to meet you. I am Grey Wolff." I politely introduced myself.
I slightly raised my head looking up a bit to see how he would react, only to find that he wasn't even paying me a dime worth of attention.
"Blue, so this is the crybaby you mentioned on the phone. She looks..... Passable, I suppose. Her Golden Gate is sufficiently mature for her to reincarnate again." The boy complained, still puffed up like a balloon. A complete contrast to the weird entrepreneur vibes his way of talking gave off.
Blue just met his eyes not saying anything, after a while, he looked at me with a mischievous grin. A grin only a sinister villain would make, it made my stomach sink for some reason. Coming to me, he proclaimed.
"You, young lady, shall be assigned to the supernatural management committee for the time being." There was surely some evil intention in his words. I looked at Blue with a face saying 'What the hell is he talking about?'.
She just nodded at Dream and looked at me. Slowly coming closer she said.
"Grey, let me guide you to our workplace."
"Blue, what is this about? Why am I suddenly assigned to a job? What about the promises you made about reincarnation?" I asked, my voice rising with frustration. Realizing my outburst, I paused, offering a quick apology. "I'm sorry for raising my voice. I didn't mean to."
She nodded. "Well, to be honest, I don't care if you start to scream at me, since that's the only specialty you have."
I clenched my fists, struggling to contain my rising frustration. 'What did she just say? Specialty?' I stopped myself, taking a deep breath to calm down.
"Fuhaaaaa......." I breathed deeply.
"Umm, Grey, why the sudden breathing exercise?" She asked, not feeling my boiling rage at all.
"Well, whatever takes me to my workplace, but before that, explain the work." I inquired, squinting my eyes seemingly suspicious of the motives of the little kid— by that time I had completely forgotten that the kid in front of me was the entity that almost killed me. Blue used her crystal ball and started explaining my work while we were crossing dimensions through her crystal ball, teleporting us to a place near the workplace.
After some time, almost reaching the work place her explanation ended.
"So, let me get this straight. I'm supposed to manage supernatural phenomena with the help of some candidates for Soul Reaper." I clarified. But then doubts crept in. "But do I even have any powers to assist me in this?"
Blue sighed in response to my question. "Firstly, you're the one helping, not being helped," she explained like a door-to-door salesman. "Secondly, being a ghost, you must possess some supernatural powers, perhaps."
Disappointment crept over me, but I pushed it aside as we arrived at our destination. It was a quiet place, approaching the building, I couldn't help but gasp at its sheer magnificence. It wasn't like any modern or fantasy structure I had ever seen. No, it was more like something straight out of a dream—a dream so vivid and breathtaking that you would never want to wake up from it.
The building stood tall and proud, its architecture a proof of the skills and care its creators had put in it. It was as if every curve and corner had been meticulously crafted with love and devotion, creating a sense of fluidity and grace that was simply mesmerizing.
I couldn't tear my eyes away from it, drawn in by the beautiful details that seemed to dance in front of me. The way the light played off the delicate carvings and swirling patterns made it feel like the building itself was alive, pulsing with magic all on its own.
As I stood there, taking it all in, I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder splash over me. It was like stepping into a whole new world, one where anything was possible and adventure awaited around every corner.
And I knew the exact words to describe it.
"The work of the supernatural." As the words escaped my lips I knew that I was about to embark on the journey of a lifetime.
