1.5 Reality Check

I wasn't sure whether to feel disappointed or confused as I noticed the group's reactions. Kar'npaul's face showed clear frustration, while Lythael tried to hide a giggle behind her hand. Nereus inspected the rune with a puzzled expression, as though expecting it to not work.

"Did I do something wrong?" I asked the group as they look at me with a certain look.

"Almost everyone can consume this lesser rune, even a small kid could do it without any problem" Nereus said, the group collectively agreeing to what he said.

"What does that mean? Am I unable to use any sword?" I curiously asked again the group as I grew more worried about my future in this world.

"For a rune to be consumed, one must have a stronger spirit and mana than the rune, the last piece to consuming a rune is having the strength to crush it", Nereus said while putting the rune back.

Lythael added, "Some classes have restrictions on what types of runes they can use. If your class isn't suited for a particular rune, you won't be able to consume it."

Kar'npaul, who had been folding up the map, looked at me and asked, "So, Jorr, do you already have a class?"

"Yes... I already got the class when I got transported here, I am a botanist" I said with certainty.

I watched as the group's expressions went from curiosity to disbelief. The awkward silence when I revealed my class was making me sweat so bad.

Kar'npaul's reaction caught my attention, his face looking like he saw a cockroach at the bathroom, while Lythael was obviously laughing and covering her face as she teared up, the only normal reaction was Nereus, who looked at me with a blank face.

"A botanist huh," Kar'npaul said with disbelief in his voice "That's one of the most basic classes you can have. It's essentially a beginner's role in this world."

Lythael nodded, with her tone feeling like an open mockery. "It's not that being a botanist is useless, but it's focused on farming crops. It doesn't help that much in terms of combat or adventuring skills. It's usually seen as a class for those just starting out."

Nereus added, "Most people don't even acknowledge the botanist class, it offers more disadvantages more than useful skills, the farmers in Windfall usually don't take this class, they choose a more offensive class to protect their land and crops."

My heart felt broken at that moment. I had hoped for a more encouraging response, but the reality of my situation was now clear. I felt a great depression filling up my body.

"With your mana stuck at a certain amount and not able to grow larger, your skill tree are limited to only crop and plants." Nereus said while rubbing his face in distress.

The atmosphere at the table grew awkward with what just happened. Kar'npaul cleared his throat, breaking the silence. "We had initially planned to let you join our group. Your knowledge of plants could have been useful in our travels. However…"

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Lythael said gently, "We already hoped for a more useful class like a mage or a bard but... a botanist? Really?."

Kar'npaul's expression became more normal as he added, "It's not that we don't want you to come with us, we need a more combat focused class to help us deal with out next commission."

It felt like a spear went thru my chest, but I understood their words. Being a dead meat without any offensive or defensive skills won't help their group in any way.

"However," Lythael said, her voice taking on a more encouraging tone, "There are many ways to become useful." she chuckled a little more, "like picking up plants for little girls, I am just kidding, you can go to the Adventurer's Society and try asking them for help, maybe they need a gardener there". Lythael openly mocking me as I looked at her with annoyance.

Kar'npaul smiled reassuringly. "Don't be looking down now, for now, find a way to sustain yourself, We'll give you some basic equipment to help you start out."

Their words, though meant to console, felt like a bittersweet reminder of how far I had to go. As the group began to discuss their own plans, I took a deep breath, resolved to make the most of the opportunity to grow and eventually prove my worth.

While the group prepared to leave the tavern, Kar'npaul placed some items on the table, from what I can see the items are things I can recognize. The first thing that caught my attention was a silver dagger and its sheathe, a ragged brown cloak, a brown pouch with 5 silvers and 50 coppers, and a small map of The Great Warfainds, with markings on windfall and a next town next to the deep forest of windfall.

"This should help you sustain in 1 week, a meal only costs 15 copper here so that won't be a problem for you." Lythael said, doing a small stretch while Nereus packs up their equipment.

"It was great meeting you Jorr, we have to go back to our commission now, let us meet here again someday!" Kar'npaul shouted, taking a step while the other 2 followed him, waving goodbye at me until they were not visible anymore in my eyes.

Alone again, my conscious thinking that I'll somehow end up with them on the long run, but facing reality, I was only a dead beat if I was to join them.

As I wore the cloak they had given me, I picked up the silver dagger from the table. I drew it out of its sheathe and examined it, when suddenly, a familiar interface flashed before my eyes.

I blinked in surprise. The interface had reappeared, now displaying information about the dagger. It took me a moment to process the details.

"Is this what I think it is?" I muttered to myself, my eyes widening as I recognized the pattern. The interface I had seen before was now providing real-time information about the items I was handling.

My mind focused back to the system window that had appeared earlier. The interface was not just a random occurrence but a tool that provided information about people, items, and possibly more.

My initial confusion began to clear, replaced by a sense of relief and excitement. The interface was a valuable tool, one that I could use to help myself when I am in deep trouble.

With a newfound determination, I took a deep breath and prepared myself for the journey ahead. I knew I had a lot to learn, but with this interface at my disposal, I felt a bit more equipped to face the dangers of this world. The first thing I had in mind was to check out The Adventurer Society.
