7: Failed Invention

It is my cute sister's first festival and she is scared, but I am taking her dancing. Very slowly and safely of course. I am helping her walk already and it is actually great fun. I hope to teach her pointers about running in the future and running together with her.

Up until this point I have spent a lot of time thinking outside of my running and helping my little sister. I have no ill regard towards the people of the village, but their way of life sounds awful. To go into the dungeon, risking your life for food almost everyday.

I have chatted some with the Silvestri traders, to get options about other ways to live. I ended up hearing their tale of creation which goes like this: Long ago, the monster god and people god wanted a world, but neither was powerful enough to make one on their own, so they worked together to create it. Once it was built, they disagreed on who should populate it. The monster good wanted strong monsters to roam the world, while the people god wanted intelligent people to do the same. Both feared a direct confrontation, so they decided to battle it out with their creations. It was a tragedy for the people, and the god saw the error. He had created rounded creations with no clear advantage. They couldn't hope to stand up to the speedy Jaggers, the cursing Xheovas, the cursing Brials. So the god of people made his own specializations. The Humans with their gifts, the Dryads with their magic, the Tarruns with their crafts, but what they truly needed was strength, and thus he made the Silvestri. Seeing how strong his new creations were, he gave the Silvestri a special task; to roam the earth, become strong, and wipe out the monsters to fight in the battle between gods, that still goes on to this day.

I am confused since they are merchants, so I ask the Silvester why he is a merchant if his task is to fight monsters, but he replied with "Nae poy. We merkands only sumtime, sumtime other be merkands. We merkands cuz we naow we neet elp. Tarruns for makeen weaporns, Dryads for magicks, Humans for mani to pay wit."

Seems this is also a dead end out of this life. Maybe becoming a blacksmith or a priest would be the only options? But the blacksmiths seem to gain muscle on their arms I don't want. It would make me slower with the added weight. And I am not ignorant enough about my own social skills to attempt to become a priest.

Maybe inventions? I have knowledge from my previous life. I may not have been the smartest kid in school, but I can work from the concepts. What was the biggest leap out of the middle ages? Steam power? If I managed to harness the wealth and thus the power from that, I would be free to what I want. Run and host races with prices for the fastest runner! I can already picture it now!

And thus I fashion a simple pinwheel bby whittling wood. It takes me a few weeks to even get it to work, since I had no idea what I was doing, but I eventually assemble it from a few different pieces of wood cut into petal shapes, fastened on an axle, and it would finally move when I blow on it. Now to test it out. The easiest access to steam would probably be my mom's cooking? So I go to the evening stew, excited to test my new invention out.

Except, there's no steam. Only cuts of meat and a small amount of vegetables in a pot of water. Is it really hot? I see no bubbles either. "She must have just set it over, let's see how hot it is" So I think, while sticking my finger into the pot.

The next few moments are a blur of pain. My hand was stinging with intense pain from heat, which made me instinctually draw my hand back. Only trouble was, accounting on my small height, I had bended my arm over the edge of the pot to even be able to touch it, so the pot was between my hand and I, so I pulled it over myself.

HOT! OUCH! PAIN! SO HOT! It is freaking scalding. My screams lead my mother to the main room, in which the kitchen is, and the rest is a blur due to the pain.

I am able to gather my thoughts after the terrible surprise. All I really remember is the scolding, the priest rubbing me in salve and saying a spell, my sister crying, my mother's worried looks and the males of my family scolding me for ruining dinner. I am in my bed consisting of hide over straw, lamenting it's discomfort especially today, since I am sensitive and sore all over from the pain. Apparently I have a few days to wait before I am good again. Magic is pretty amazing, huh?
