“Tutorial Goal: Clear your region to access the Class Core for the area.”
Once the new goal was announced a green tinged map popped up in her vision. On it were five highlighted suburbs, including hers, in a circle of sorts that surrounded a small, bright blue dot labelled ‘Class Core’. She had a feeling it would be necessary for the future. Confirming her thoughts Oras spoke up as he finished vacuuming “Mistress needs to make haste for big crystal. Big crystal help stop bigger, badder slaves from killing Mistress.”
“Huh? Slaves?” Rose asked while willing the map to clear from her vision.
“Yes Mistress, defeated, weak peoples and beasts are sold as slaves to The Nexus. Then The Nexus transports weak peoples to be challenges for the newly incorporated. The Nexus will keep transporting stronger and stronger slaves to challenge newly incorporated. If the new peoples are too weak then the slaves can defeat them and gain back their freedom.”
Rose stared at Oras, horrified. The humans of earth needed to get as strong as possible as soon as possible or they would all be slaughtered.
Half an hour later the remaining one hundred and eight survivors were gathered in the common room on the third story. There were fifteen children, nine young teens and forty-three elderly. All of these were considered unable to fight, winning their own fight through pure luck or having someone able bodied fight for them. All enemies had been defeated and there were now three goblins, one hobgoblin and a slime monster locked in the maintenance room. Luckily there were no more dead besides those who had already been found. They had been buried in the small yard at the back of the building.
“Alright everybody some new information has come to light so listen up” Larry called loudly.
Rose stood beside him, though a step behind, putting up a front of solidarity. Public speaking wasn’t really her thing but she was good at organising stuff. Zen was sticking around, splayed out on the ground next to her belly up and looking on, from upside down, with interest. The old stationmaster began his explanation “The enemies are going to keep arriving stronger than before and if we don’t keep up in strength, we’re all going to die. The plan is to work our way towards the point on the map as this nexus thing directed. It’s all we can do for now to stay alive. Martin has also brought to our attention that concentrating on certain information in the notifications can expand them, allowing us to learn more. From expanding the term ‘safe zone’ we have found out that just means no more challengers will be transported inside the building. It doesn’t actually prevent any monsters from coming in. This means a certain amount of people able to fight will have to stay behind at all times. Also, Jason has been trying video game logic to control the screen and seems to have found some success. Simply focus on a status screen appearing and it will. You should also notice tabs at the top of the screen and if you focus on the second tab, the map will appear.
There is also something called a ‘party’ system which is apparently quite common in games. There is a maximum of five per party and up to five parties can group together and form a ‘raid team’. According to the information found this will help share experience. If we fight in a group but don’t have the party feature active only the person that gets the kill will gain experience. This is extremely inefficient as not only will the people who helped get no experience for levels, but also the killer won’t get the full amount due to having been helped. If you wish to hunt alone, that is your prerogative. But should you wish to hunt in a group it is highly recommended you form a party. We have already had a group form one and there is actually an extra benefit we did not account for. Something called ‘party chat’ which allows the party members to communicate telepathically, somehow. Honestly, everything is just really weird right now, but we’re all just trying to survive so we’re going to just have to take what we can and move on. Now, this ‘party chat’ also allows you to type messages mentally to others members, but with the whole telepathy thing its not really necessary. In a ‘raid team’ only the party leaders will be able to communicate via ‘party chat’. Alright, that’s everything so far. Before we split into groups and plan our routes does anyone have anything else to share?”
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
There was only silence. “Does anyone have any questions?”
In an instant more than twenty hands went up. This was going to take a while.
Another half hour later all questions had been answered to the best of Larry’s abilities. Most of the answers were just repeating or clarifying what had already been said. Finally, they moved on to splitting up the groups. Of the forty-one people able to fight ten were mothers that wanted to stay with their children, and two were stay at home fathers that also wanted to watch over the young ones. That was the home base squad organised. The parents would form a three group raid team of four members per party. That left twenty-nine to suss out the region. They decided to form two raid teams, each with three parties. Larry would be Scouting Raid Team One’s leader and Martin, a retired army officer who enjoyed MMORPG’s, would be Scouting Raid Team Two’s leader. Another surprise came when they discovered a ‘clan’ could be formed which could consist of up to five raid teams. Just as party leaders could communicate with each other, if a ‘clan’ was formed then raid team leaders could also communicate with each other. So, the four raid leaders then formed a ‘clan’. Apparently, a clan had to be named so they just named it after the building they lived in. It was called ‘Peacehome Apartments’ so their clan was now known as the ‘Peacehome Clan’.
Once Rose was finished organising the parties, Larry took over to organise the routes the scouting teams would take. The decision was made not to make their way around all the highlighted suburbs, but just focus on their own. Their apartment building was close to the outside edge of the region so they would make their way directly to the core. She was in Martin’s party and would be taking the left side of their suburbs, while Larry’s raid team would be clearing out the right side of the suburb. Both raid teams would make sure to return before sunset as it was obvious the goal couldn’t be completed in a day. With both the groupings and the routes settled, they set out. Only a few minutes later a new notification came through.
“The Class Core for the district has been accessed.”
Select one of the following to continue:
- Activate Class Core. Enemies will become more challenging to accommodate
- Leave Class Core Dormant. Enemies will remain as is until initial goal has been completed
“Tutorial Goal: Clear your region to access the Class Core for the area.”
You have 30 seconds to select one of the options and decide your vote. Not selecting an option will count as abstaining from the vote.
Rose decided to explain her decision to keep anyone in their raid teams from making a stupid mistake. “Everyone in the region is only just beginning to level” she proclaimed loudly “activating the core before we are ready will lead to all our deaths. We need to wait until we have finished clearing the goal.”
Everyone around her nodded in understanding. Once Rose had gotten her point across, she selected the dormant option and then waited with fingers crossed.
“‘Leave Class Core Dormant. Enemies will remain as is until initial goal has been completed’ is the deciding outcome.
Voting Results:
Activate – 13.2%
Dormant – 85.3%
Abstained – 1.5%
Tutorial Goal: Clear your region to access the Class Core for the district.”
Rose breathed out a sigh of relief, turns out there were only a few thousand stupid people in their region. She made a note to find and categorise them later so as to avoid any mishaps.
