Ch. 16 Church and Slums

Ch. 16 Church and Slums

Together with my pet and follower, we are heading off to a church where many people prayed and worshiped the 6 almighty gods. A few days ago with the incident in the Auction House, it got pretty big in just a few minutes after it happened. Almost everyone in this country was talking about it. Information does spread fast. Everyone was sympathizing with the dead nobles who had just died. Trying to obtain the Greater-quality magic weapon, anyone especially the nobles would’ve tried to get it even if it meant risking their lives for it. As for Eric Salaam, it seemed that he had died when the 3 of us eradicated everyone. I don’t remember myself killing him though, but I don’t even know what he looks like so I might have killed him not knowing this famed S rank Adventure looks like. Maybe Nemaus and Akuezhor killed him. I almost forgot that he was hired for security in the auction though. Tossing the irrelevant thoughts away, I have been a bit busy the past few days.

Ever since that time, the 3 of us had been doing quests on the Adventurer’s Bulletin. Such as wolf hunting. Actually, that was really the only thing we did. Wolf hunting was a D rank quest. How we ranked up to D so quickly? We turned in large amounts of goblin ears after the old man suspected that we had a large amount of goblin ears in our bags and instead of receiving the money, we got our ranks up to D. It seems that the unofficial rule in the Guild was that if the person did the job a bit too excessive, then they would rank you up instead of them paying you. Cheapskates. I don’t quite mind the money though since I could just request Akuezhor for some money that he obtained in the goblin’s dungeon. He doesn’t even use it so when I asked him for some, he insists that I just keep the money. Very convenient.

When we were doing our wolf hunting quest, it was really boring. Compared to the incident with the goblins, this was nothing special at all. We would fly to the forest where the wolves were and slaughter them. It was nothing exciting. When I found out that the wolves were starting to move to a new territory and move out of this country, I decided to let them go instead of killing them and use ‘Lifeless Body Creation’ and made a couple of wolves and cut their ears off. Then I let some random carnivores eat the bodies. As long as they don’t come to waste then I am fine with it. What do Adventurer’s usually do when they had to leave a dead animal after cutting the ears out as proof of their killings. Do they at least bury it.?

Akuezhor stretched his upper body while next to me, “Master, we are almost there. Have you set up the spells to cover ourselves yet.”

“Yes I did.” I said as I nod. The church had holy barriers and spells to either block or detect evil beings such as an undead being like myself, from entering their sacred ground. If I did then I would get burned and have my status debuffed for a bit. The 6 gods were said to be known for their power and ability. Each one are capable enough to destroy countries if they desired to on a whim. They were all not just worshipped by humans, but demi-humans and elves alike. Nevertheless, the races are always hostile to each other. Mostly humans though.

We arrived at the church grounds. The church could be said that they are an organization itself. They worship the 6 gods and it seems that there are people who are called apostles. Apostles are messengers or representatives of their respective gods. They possess considerable power which their gods blessed them with and can be used to match that of a dragon. Depending on which god they followed, their weapons would be the same as them. Anyways, the apostles were to be said that they can match dragons. Because of this the church can be said that they had more power than kingdoms all together. No one would want to offend them since the church could just accuse them for insulting the gods or whatnot and kill them for their insolence for disrespecting them.. They are just another political party in my eyes though. The Apostles usually travel somewhere else in the continent so to make sure monsters are kept under control.

In this church grounds, there are many buildings including 6 of them which stands out the most. Probably those 6 buildings corresponds to the 6 gods where people pray to the different gods. That being said, even though they worship them, they don’t even know their names. I mostly got this out by overhearing people’s conversations. They mostly referred the 6 as weapons such as “The God of the Long Sword or Bow. Those are 2 examples. They wouldn’t dare assume what name they had because it would be disrespectful if the names were actually wrong. Fortunately for them, all 6 gods uses different weapons so they could refer to a god without mistaking one for that one.

That being said, I then nervously went inside the visible barrier in front of me along with my companions. Nothing seemingly happened when he passed through. No alarms. No debuffs. Nothing at all. Even so Akuezhor and I didn’t let our guards down. Getting to know the layout of the map here by buying it in a store in church grounds, we explored this place for its certain attractions. This place seems to have things such as the tournaments where different teams consisting of members of the church would face each other, a fortune teller who tells you what kind of fortune you will receive in the future, and some seemingly rich food that are expensive as fuck. Still bought it for Nemaus. I decided to watch the tournament because you can’t deny that seeing fights could make you excited.

Going to the tournament area because it seems more attractive, the fight between 2 teams in an arena came into view. There was one unusual thing about the atmosphere of the tournament though. Each team were looking at each other with immense killing intent. They aren’t going to kill each other right? Also, they are all wearing shirts with a symbol of something which I assumed which god they follow on it.

“Why are they so unfriendly with each other? Are they not from the same religion?” I inquired Akuezhor

“Despite them being in the same church or organization, they are in different factions. Even though they have respect for all six, they would follow one specific god. To be honest, I don’t really know how this started to begin with. It might have been for increasing a person’s influence and power within the church. Maybe not. I want to know this as well.” Akuezhor said with sigh

I nodded, “I see. Let’s watch how this contest goes.” Coming to the audience and sitting in the very back. Even being this far, I could observed the teams who are beating the hell out of each other. Each team seems to be holding some Medium Grade magic weapon. How did the church have so much money? Buying an expensive magic weapon for everyone on the teams is outrageous. How much importance is this event anyways?

Turning my gaze to Akuezhor who was sitting next to me, “Do you know how much significance this tournament is?”

Akuezhor almost dozing off in boredom, “Huhh~, oh no. I was pretty sure this started when I was still a child; however, I have no clue as for the reason behind it. Maybe there is some kind of reward for the winner?”

“A reward huh.” Doesn’t matter to me. Whatever kind of reward it is makes no difference to me unless it is something a special item or something.Nodding my head I continued to watch the fight.

After it finally finished, my thoughts were that they were a bit creepy. The ugly faces they make especially when they were at a disadvantage in the fight, and the amount of killing intent that was released from them was not pleasant at all. Getting up and leaving the tournament attraction with Akuezhor and Nemaus on my left shoulder, we next headed to the churches where a couple of worshippers were praying.

We didn’t go inside of course. If we did, we might have to start praying, and honestly I don’t know if it involves a specific way or whatnot. While we were just gazing at the place inside a church, a young man wearing a black robe with white clothing underneath while wearing some kind of necklace, came to us. He looks like a person who usually gives out teachings about religious things in a church. Is it a sermon? Whoever it is, the way that he dresses and the feeling I get from him is something akin to authority. He may be young, but he is probably an important person. But why for what reason did he come to us?

“Good Morning young man. Is there something you need help with?”-Sermon

“No, we were just on our way to leave. We have some business to take care of.” I smiled

“Oh? I could have sworn that you were eager to pray inside.” Sermon said with a confused tone while moving an eyebrow as he looked at the inside of the church buildings next to us.

“My apologies, but we only came here to sightsee. Excuse us.” I bowed

“I understand. Sorry for keeping your time. May you at least tell me who is the person next to you is?” He gazed at Akuezhor

“His name is Aku. We were friends since kids. We are both currently traveling the world. Trying to see as much of this world while we can.” I smiled with a lie

“Nice to meet you.” Akuezhor bowed

“Oh dear, how could I forget to introduce myself. I am Judom. A high-priest of this church.” Judom smiled but I can’t help but feel that he is interrogating us as he gazed Akuezhor and me with suspicious eyes.

“Is there something wrong?” I inquired

Getting back to his senses, “Hmm? Ah, there is nothing wrong. It is just that I keep getting a weird feeling from you guys.” As he said that he started to twirl his necklace. Getting suspicious, I silently used ‘Analyze’ on him and his cross while at it.

Judom

A High-Priest that is part of the 6 gods that are worshipped in this world. Ever since he was a child, he was extremely skilled with magic, especially light magic. Judom was raised to be a well-known magician ever since he was found out of his abilities. Doing well in his studies, he achieved a recommendation from the 6 gods’ church. Because of his high affinity of light magic, he is sensitive of dark related energies. With that he can sense [evil] beings nearby.

Skills:Healing, Cure, Light Manipulation, Darkness Perception

Well Fuck~. Now I am getting quite concerned whether or not Akuezhor and I would get tagged as evil beings that have infiltrated the church sacred grounds. Checking the cross if their is something I have to be aware of.

Holy Cross

A cross that increases the wielder’s magic and senses.

Special: Increases senses to dark beings nearby

Immediately after reading the special effect of the holy cross, I activated ‘Equipment Power Nullification’. The effect of this spell was to negate an equipment’s abilities for a duration of a time. The time varies on the amount of mana spent. Usually another player is capable of negating this spell by simply enhancing it with special enchantment gems in the game. So it wasn’t really used often when a person reaches max level. Anyways, after casting the spell on his cross silently, Judom suddenly have a confused expression. His eyes squinted as if he was trying to focus on something.

“High Priest, is something the matter?” I said with an innocent tone

Judom gives me a strange look and said, “No.No. Nothing is wrong. I almost forgot. I still have to welcome to other guests. Please enjoy your time here.” He smiled before turning around while muttering to himself if his powers are diminishing.

“Do you think he found us out?” asking Akuezhor for his opinion on this matter

“I believe he only at most suspect us. He doesn’t have any proof, but maybe he doesn’t need proof as long as he suspects us as dark beings.” Akuezhor said with a grim expression.

“Let’s just get out of here. I casted a spell on his cross to negate some of his sensitivity to darkness. It is enough to nullify his Holy Cross’s power for a couple of hours, but who knows if we would be found out by others.” I sighed.

“I agree.” And with that we got the hell out of the church. Leaving the church’s grounds, I sighed in relief. I last thing I want to do is attract attention towards myself in mass-scale. Though if I calmly think about it, I could just change my appearance anytime. With ‘Lifeless Body Creation’ I could pretty much never be caught as long as no one finds out that I am capable of this. I wonder if they can even do anything even if they did know about it. I turned my head sideways to Akuezhor.

“We won’t be doing anything for the rest of the day. Let’s just stroll around this kingdom again.” I said with a bored expression. I guess I have been getting bored of lately. The quests gave me a small reason to do something while here. I began thinking about what kind of goals I want for this world.

Nothing comes to mind except making a dungeon. Though I planned to do that in the far future. I have yet to make the plans that are necessary to establish a dungeon. It must be in a good place where people could spot it easily. Also, I also need to study more about dungeons the moment I decide to go and make one.

Browsing the many stalls here and buying some apples that Nemaus wanted to eat, I decided to also go to a bakery store which is located a bit near the slums. I want to know what kind of cakes they make and possibly collect them into my storage when I decide to eat them with another body or something at a later date. Walking towards the location of the bakery shop, I started to feel the mood became gloomy which was just a lively and happy one initially. Taking a look around this area which doesn’t have any sunlight because of the buildings, I could see that this part of the kingdom is quite dirty. I could smell urine, shoot, vomit, and other things that smell horrible in this area. Is this the slums perhaps?

The floor doesn’t seem to be clean, the windows and doors were broken. This place doesn’t seem to be a good place to raise someone. What makes it worse was that when I took a look inside a building with a broken door, I saw people who were sleeping in the room. The smell human odor that filled this place entered my nose. Nemaus and Akuezhor both had distorted faces when they smelled the place. Someone woke up and when his eyes focused on me, he jumped on hit his head under the table which he was sleeping under for some reason.

The noise woke up the others who began to notice my presence. They took a very good look at me and backed a bit. Inside this building, there wasn’t any light, but because of my Night Sight, I could clearly see as clear day in this room. Men, women, children, and even the old are in this building. Their bodies show signs of nutrient deprivation. Many of them were very deathly skinny while some of them were just slightly skinny. Nonetheless, I could see the what is going on. They are starving because they had no work or something else might have happened to them.

I took a glance at Akuezhor and he looked as if he was in pain. His expression truely shows that he is hurt from seeing this. Especially the children that are sleeping on their parents lap. Their faces showed signs of tears coming out of their eyes. It really pains my heart. I want to help them, but I am not sure how to. I suddenly sensed a soul being departed from this place. Turning in the direction of where it was a few moments ago, I could guess what had happened. One of the woman here died. I couldn’t sense any life in her body. As if noticing my gaze, a seemingly young man very slowly got up and went to the woman. Checking her pulse on her throat, he started to drag her out of the room, passed by us, and left her outside the building. Going back inside ever so slowly I looked into his eyes.

The feeling of hopelessness, grief, sadness, misery, are all embodied in his very eyes. Not just him, everyone here have the same eyes as him. They were all staring at me with those eyes. I believe that even if I were to kill them, they would actually see it as salvation. Akuezhor turned his eyes away from them as a small stream of tears slowly comes out of his eyes. Nemaus no longer looked and faced another direction.

“May you people tell me why has this happened to you?” I said as I can no longer endure this scene.

No response.

“If you guys tell me how you guys get into this situation, then I can probably help you.” I said trying to give them some kind of hope.

Again no response. But I was able to see them react a bit when I mentioned help. However they immediately went back to their pitiful state. They all began to continue sleeping, waiting for their deaths to come.

“Akuezhor, let’s leave.” Surprisingly he agreed by nodding. I thought he would say something, but he must have seen the endless hopelessness in their very heart. Leaving the building, I took the dead woman’s body and put it into my storage.
