ACT FIVE SCENE TWO

ACT FIVE SCENE TWO

Professor Fayemi's office the following day. He is alone.

PROF.: Why! Why? Why did I do it? What invisible force made me do this shameful deed? Had time cohered with place would she not be my daughter? Why then did I do this cruel thing to her? Why (Pauses.) And why not marry her and accept the child? After all, I have been looking for a child for so long! Why can't I do that and kick Ibiye out? Yet, something holds me back! Why? I wish I could forget this shameful episode in my life, but that unsleeping watcher; that reminder of past glory and present disgrace, that clock of man's time and recorder of his deeds and misdeeds, the ever-conscious conscience will not let me be. Its soft insistent voice keeps breaking into my thoughts like a wave breaking upon a rock. O I wish I had listened to the voice, of that divine guide and refrained from committing such a monstrous atrocity on this innocent girl! But now it’s too late. The deed is done, and all that remains is the echo of that loveless love affair. (Femi storms in.)

FEMI: You vile, foul, uncouth product of an unlucky womb, you most disgraceful of all men, do you dare stand in this unholy office untroubled by conscience? Behold, the hour of judgment has come and I am here to avenge all the foul things you subjected Liz to.

(He rushes at the Prof. with raised fists.)

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

PROF: Hey, better be careful with those fists. Hit me and I shall have you expelled from this university!

FEMI: So you will threaten me the same way you blackmailed Liz? Well, I care not if I am expelled. But vengeance is mine!

(He chases the Prof. round the room, buffeting him with punches. The Prof. shouts. Messenger rushes in.)

MESSENGER: Hey, Prof, what is happening? Do you dare play Ali and Foreman here while a life is already lost? Look, Prof., that girlfriend of yours is dead!

BOTH: What?

FEMI: Liz dead? Are you serious?

MESSENGER: Of course! Even now, her body lies at a private hospital with her grief-stricken mother who had come to visit her daughter only to be greeted with the news of her death.

FEMI: But why?

MESSENGER: ABORTION! She tried to abort but failed. She is dead now.

FEMI: You aged animal, see what you've done? A good life lost just because you cannot at this age of yours control your libido. And do you think you can evade the hand of justice? Nooo! A life calls for a life, and die you must, Prof., for the life of the girl you drove to an untimely death.

(He brings out a knife and begins to chase the Prof. round the office.)

PROF: Help! Help! Help!

(The messenger tries to disarm Femi, but the latter gives him a kick and he collapses with a groan. Two security officers rush in and converge on Femi. A struggle ensues, and Femi is finally disarmed and dragged out. Meanwhile the professor had escaped through the window. The only person left is the messenger who is still groaning fitfully on the ground.)
