20. Familiars and Friends

I arrived at the temple in the evening. Tye was already there, but nobody else was. Maybe this was my chance to warm up to her, because she didn't seem too keen on being my friend. Since we were in the same party, I thought it would be best to get closer to her.

Upon further inspection, I noticed that Tye had also grabbed a new outfit and weapons for our adventure. She sat on a bench on the upper level of the temple, sharpening one of her twinblades as I approached her.

"Oh, it's you." She said. "I figured you'd show up." Her voice was down, as if someone had just kicked her puppy and she was mourning it.

"Yeah, hi." I said. "What's with the attitude?" I snapped.

"I'm not a very friendly person." She spat.

"I see. I guess that makes two of us." I sat down next to her, noticing her three bags on the floor.

"Potions?" I asked, pointing to the bag filled with green vials.

"Poisons, actually." She said lifting them up, her tone improving. "They do all sorts of things like slow your target, cause pain, increase your magical damage, and even make your weapon sharper." She pulled out four vials one by one. "I don't have many, but you're another Ranger, so I thought you could use these." She was being nice to me but acting like she hates me.

"Okay." I snapped. "What's your problem with me? We've barely talked but you already act like you hate me?" She seemed surprised at my sudden forwardness and scooted away from me just a bit.

"Hey." I spat, after her silence. "You going to answer me?"

"You're my replacement." She spat back at me. "We already have a ranger in the party, so we don't need you unless they're replacing me." She scoffed like a princess who thought she deserved the world.

"Well." I sighed, feeling sympathetic for her. "I can tell you this Tye, I'm not actively trying to be against you." I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms. "If there are five people in a party, and only four roles, there is bound to be a duplicate somewhere."

"There are five roles actually." Tye said, loosening her tone just a little bit. "Warrior. Ranger. Healer. Mage. Support." She counted each role on her fingers. "So either you're the support, or I am. One of us has to be useless." She muttered.

"Neither of us are useless." I snapped back. "We can both fight to the best of our ability. There's no set in stone rule that defines how a party works. We fight together."

"Maybe so."

"Let's at least make an effort to get along." I said, gesturing my hand out to her.

"Fine," Tye replied gripping my hand. "I can show you how to apply the poisons if you'd like."

I obliged. She opened one of the bottles and gestured for my knife. I expected the poison to smell awful, but it was odorless. I drew my knife and handed it to her. She poured the green liquid onto my knife quickly, and I was about to stop her, thinking it would spill, however, the knife absorbed the liquid like a sponge. Tye handed me the knife back, and the poison radiated from it like green smoke.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

"The poisons are extremely interesting, they last for an hour and completely coat your weapon. They don't come off even when it's sheathed and you can get about three doses from one bottle." Tye's eyes lit up. I was honestly surprised, she seemed so interested in them.

"You can also level up your poisons the more you gather." She reached inside her bag and pulled out some ziplock bags of different plants.

"These are Zynite, Glowing Mushrooms, and Circadian Flowers." She pointed to three appropriate bags as she went on. "You grind them up, add in some salt water, and voila!" She held up another vial of poison. "You get poison!"

"That sounds awesome!" I exclaimed, taking an interest. "So you gather the plants in specific areas?" I questioned.

"Yes!" She exclaimed back. "You think poisons are cool?! Man they are the best!" Her mood switched quickly, which I thought was super odd. Everything else she had talked about had been sort of mellow, but when poisons were brought up it seemed to make her very happy.

"I'll definitely add that to my list of skills to learn." I said, putting her vials into slots in my backpack so they wouldn't break.

"I can share it with you!" She exclaimed. "If .. if you'd like." She scoffed again, putting on her cold resting face once again. This girl was weird.

"How?" I asked curiously.

"You can trade skills as long as they don't require an element." She noted, taking out her adventurer card. "Here let me see your card." she gestured towards me.

I took out my card, and she touched her card to mine. We both pushed on the "spells" category and she tapped the one labled poisons. She shared it with me, and sure enough the card read "Poisons" underneath the rest of my spells. This spell was in green text, compared to my other cyan colored spells.

"There ya go." She smiled at me. "Now you can enjoy poisons like I do." It was as if this girl had started to like me solely based on the fact that I liked poisons. That's really off putting.

"Yo!" Zach had arrived to meet us. Kayden and Stephanie were behind him. Tye and I put our cards away. It looked like it was time for us to go.

We walked outside of the temple, meeting up with Julie and a very short demi-human boy. He had brown hair with black splotches. Horns protruded from his head slightly. He came up to my shoulder and I thought it was adorable that he was smaller than me.

"This is Grayson." Julie patted him and he smiled brightly. "He is my familiar, and is a demihuman."

"Nice to meet you all." He said nervously putting his arms behind his back. His tail wagged as Julie pet his head.

"Now that introductions are completed, let's get going." Julie said. We walked for a moment, Grayson keeping to Julie's side the whole way. We arrived just outside the Temple's training area, to the cart I had stolen from the bandits.

The caravan was large, being able to fit all six of us, including all of our belongings. We each hopped into the caravan and got situation, while Julie stood out and got Grayson ready. I looked through the window at the front with all the others. I really wanted to see Grayson transform.

Poof. The small demihuman boy disappeared in a cloud of gray smoke and had completed turned into an Oxen. He was a large brown cow with black spots and two large black horns. My mouth dropped at seeing this. That was astonishing!

"Ready?!" He exclaimed excitedly, snorting after he spoke. "Let's go!" Julie took the reigns and we were off. The ride was bumpy and quick, and Julie had to constantly remind Grayson not to go too quickly. Stephanie looked extremely motion sick throughout the ride and Zach had completely passed out within minutes! How the hell does he accomplish that?

Kayden, Tye, and I all talked throughout the trip. Julie kept a watchful eye and took care of a few monsters we came across. Zach slept through the whole ride, and we had to stop for Stephanie to get sick a couple of times because of the caravan. Poor girl.
