(Phix’s POV)
My name is Phix, and I’m a cat beastman, working at the adventure’s guild as a receptionist. The day has just begun, but I can tell it will be a slow day, as most of the high-ranking adventurers are either resting today or away in long lasting quests.
I sigh as the day goes by. I’m feeling a bit bored as I stand without nothing to do. I finished all my paperwork yesterday, so I’m completely free right now. I also don’t have affiliate adventurer. Well, it’s my fault if I don’t have one.
As long as a receptionist frequently attends an adventurer, they can star an affiliation. With this, we start a deeper business relationship, to the point here the receptionist can follow the adventurer in a quest. The receptionist gains a bonus in salary, and the adventurer not only can get a bonus in selling materials, they can also get quests easier as we, receptionist, if affiliate, can reserve the quest or recommend the adventurer.
The reason for not choosing an adventurer… is because of my race. Although we beastman are allied to the human race, it’s something recent, since the last war against the demon race. Before that, our race was always in war, creating a lot of hate between us.
And now, even after two hundred years, it’s quite common for humans look down on beast people. Because of that, I have seen it in the eyes of many adventurers. Although I have seen some nice guys, they also looked at me with lecherous eyes as beast people are quite popular slaves. It’s easy to see, since beastman have some knack for reading people.
And today, a new face entered the guild. Head covered, as well the face, dressed almost entirely in black, with two daggers on the base of his back. He approached my counter and said, looking me into the eyes, saying:
(Yozora): “I’d like to register on the guild.”
He said. I nodded, smiling like a guild receptionist should do, and asked:
(Phix): “As you wish! Can you read and write?”
I asked the normal question. He nodded.
(Phix): “Then please, fill this formulary. If you want, by the price of one silver, I can fill it for you.”
I said, taking out a paper from below the counter, a feather and an inkwell. Taking the feather, he started to write nimbly. While he wrote, I seized him up a bit. He didn’t have any kind of lust, but he indeed glanced at my ears a few times. Is he a racist? He finished filling the formulary.
Let’s see… no place of origin, quite normal. Many adventurers don’t fill this part. Name… Akatsuki Yozora… what a strange name. is he a foreigner? His eyes are a bit different after all. Age… 17? He’s already an adult, huh?
Job… none? Well, he didn’t register on the guild, and only nobles can have jobs at early ages after all. This isn’t anything out of the common. His level… 30?! That’s high for his age! Normally, it’s around nine or ten! This guy has a background!
(Phix): “Mister Akatsuki, please, follow me to the back so we can make your adventurer’s card!”
I said, indicating the door at the end of the counters for him to enter. He nodded, walking to the door while I went to the same door and opened it for him. I guided him to the back, where the Registration Board is. This board magically creates an Adventurer’s Card, a tool essential for the adventurer.
The information can only be showed if the adventurer in question allows it, and it allows the adventurer to take quests on the guild. It also keeps track of the vital signs of its holder and gives out the location of the holder when he or she dies. Because of that, we can issue a quest for the recovery of the body immediately.
Stopping besides the pedestal with the board over it, I indicate it and start explaining:
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.
(Phix): “This is the Registration Board. When you touch it, a particular window will appear where you can choose your job and register on the guild.”
He nodded, stepping forward.
(Yozora’s POV)
I touched the Registration Board, and a window showed up, displaying the jobs. More than fifty appeared, which surprised me a lot. The jobs ranged from warrior, rogue, assassin, to blacksmith, artisan and to musician, acrobat, fire dancer, etc.
After all, assassination involves infiltration, and the true art of hiding is hiding in plain sight. I can perform on a stage easily, as well make fire dances and “breathe fire” using a flammable solution. I can even swallow swords and juggle. And I indeed used these skills to get closer to my target and get money to pay for food in missions.
But of course, I choose assassin. With that, a few windows appear on my vision.
You have acquired a new job! Assassin
You have acquired new skills!
Shadow Step Type:SkillTier:Novice Description: Allows you to step from shadow to teleport from shadow to shadow within a certain range.
Assassinate Type:SkillTier:Novice Description: The life and blood of the assassins. When the skill is used, the chances of insta-kill raises greatly.
Shadow Walk Type:SkillTier:Novice Description: While on shadows and nighttime your movement speed raises significantly. Doesn’t affect detection.
Skills… it’s the first time that I see something labeled as skill instead of trait or something else. Also, these skills are nice! I can think of a lot of uses for it already! With my job chosen, I look to the receptionist and say:
(Yozora): “I’m done.”
She nodded, and a card came out of the sphere. She indicated me to take it, and so I do as she explains:
(Phix): “This is your adventurer card and will be the proof that you are part of the adventurer’s guild. In case of loss, the cost to request a new one is three silver coins. It can be used as identification to enter freely in any city of the kingdom. As any adventurer, you will start at F rank. After five normal jobs and a subjugation job, you can apply for a rank up.”
(Yozora): “I see.”
I take out the letter from the pouch on my back, saying:
(Yozora): “I got a recommendation letter from a noble for a direct rank up.”
The receptionist looks at me surprised for a second, her ears twitching cutely. I wonder if she will let me pet them. One thing that I live are cats, they are just so cute! She’s a cute girl with cute red hair and cute cat ears! She’s the ultimate combo!
(Phix): “In that case, please, wait in the training grounds in the back for the guild and I will get an instructor to make the test for rank up. Please, have in mind that the letter doesn’t mean anything if you can’t pass the test. The letter please.”
She says, extending her hand. I give the letter to her and she guides me to the back, to the training grounds that are quite wide to tell the truth. She asks me to wait here and goes back inside. I sit down and start waiting.
(Phix’s POV)
I sigh as I walk to the Guildmaster’s room in the second floor. In the end, he’s just an edgy noble kid. They are quite common, coming here disguised as serious adventurers with a rank up request. And he showed such promise as well. I get to the Guildmaster’s room and knock, and almost instantly, a grave voice answer:
(Guildmaster): “Come in.”
Used to this, I open the door, saying:
(Phix): “Guildmaster, it’s Phix.”
(Guildmaster): “Oh, Phix. What is it?”
I look to the giant man behind the table. Guldimaster Wolf, a man that’s two meters tall, with big muscles and a bald head, with dark skin and brown eyes, his exposed muscular arms covered in scars. Surprisingly, he’s quite a gentle person. The marks in the face showing some age, but still lively and ready for combat at any time.
He was quite famous on his days, being a A-rank adventurer that wrestled a Demon Wolf to submission, earning the nickname “Demon Strength”. After retiring, he turned into a Guldimaster, to prepare the next generation of adventurers.
(Phix): “I got a recommendation letter from a noble to a rank up from a freshly registered adventurer.”
(Wolf): “Heh~. So, what kid of fighter is he?”
He asks, while reading the letter.
(Phix): “Well, he appeared here dressed as an assassin, but he didn’t have any job. He was level thirty though, so he probably is a sheltered child who was leveled by his parent’s guards.”
As I talk, Wolf-san’s face turns grave as he reads the letter. I tilt my head in confusion to his face. Noticing me look, he smiles and says:
(Wolf): “Phix, go back to the adventurer, I’ll send the instructor shortly.”
I nod and turn back, walking out of the room. I get the impression that I heard a “this will be fun” from behind me, but I might be mistaken. After all, there’s no way Wolf-san will instruct a rank up test himself, right? It would be overkill after all.
