27: Origins

Feeling a buzz from inside his coat, Alex pressed a button beneath his clothes and spoke.

“Where are you?”

A deep voice sounded from his ear piece, “We've arrived, Chief. You said we are to wait outside?” The man asked, confusion apparent in his voice.

“Yes,” Alex curtly replied, before abruptly ending the call. Letting out a deep breath, Alex rested his eyes. Moments of silence, of peace, were rare for a man like him.

“How ironic is it that to strive for peace is to forsake a peaceful life?”

After resting for a few minutes, Alex gently massaged his legs. He felt like his muscles had gone rotten and sloppy, but he could move properly now. He wants to preserve his unwavering profile, and walking with shaky legs isn't synonymous to unwavering.

Looking around the aftermath of the basement, Alex saw countless Spawns strewn around like black dust.

“I might as well,” Alex shrugged, taking out a pen from his coat and emptying it. Picking up a few Spawns and putting it inside the empty case, Alex was about to leave when an anomaly caught his attention.

“Is that… a new type of bug? I didn't know the Swarm consists of various bugs,” Alex hummed. Taking out another pen, he emptied it like the other one and placed the dead Motherbug inside.

Satisfied with harvested samples, Alex dusted his clothes and carefully climbed the staircase. Each step was a bit steep, but it didn't bother him at the slightest.

Reaching the ground level, he calmly walked out of the house and was greeted by the fresh air of the overgrown place. Parked in front of the old house was a car that was cut in half. Standing beside the broken car was a tall man wearing a full uniform of dark blue, almost like he was a college student.

“Sir,” the agent bowed toward Alex who was approaching.

“We are going back,” Alex said, walking toward the vehicle behind the agent.

Opening the door, Alex entered the car, sitting on the chair before abruptly standing up. The inside of the car was spacious, able to easily carry ten people at once like a van.

Meanwhile on the outside, after Alex stood up, he vanished from view.

Not long after Alex entered, the agent who greeted Alex entered the “broken” car and began driving according to Alex's instructions.

From the outside, the broken car merely faded away.

“Give me a report,” Alex said, walking calmly toward his office. The previous headquarters of the organization was wrecked, and Alex had to rebuild it from the ground up.

Thinking about the incident, Alex felt his headache worsening, a slight frown gracing his cold mask.

‘Instead of exterminating the majority of anomalies, what happened instead was setting them loose,’ Alex let out an inaudible sigh. He knew the current situation with the Colony Type Anomalies was merely the calm before the storm.

‘There are numerous anomalies who escaped. Not only that, Chief mentioned before his death that countless anomalies have appeared around the globe.’

“Sir,” his secretary bowed. She was a tall woman, nearly as tall as Alex who was six foot three inches tall. Her ponytail hair reached her waist, and her skin was pale as white. In some aspects, her stoic face was similar to Alex, and both of their eyes were deep blue.

“Sir Ven got into some trouble in the Eastern Continent, sir Bennett…”

“Wait, Ven is in trouble?” Alex paused, just before he could twist the doorknob on the door to his office. “You mean to tell me that Ven, the guy who has an overpowered anomaly, is in trouble?”

“Yes sir,” Alexandra nodded. Seeing her brother having trouble never failed to amuse her, but she couldn't let her emotions seep out. Otherwise, she'd be in deep trouble.

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

Alex let out a long sigh, before entering his office and sitting on his chair.

“Tell me the details.”

“After locating the Desert Guppies, sir Ven used his anomaly, the Neverending Prophecy, to kill the Ghostly Fish.”

“Yeah? Then how is he in trouble?”

The Desert Guppies weren't actual fish. They were made of sand, but to grow in numbers, they have to devour fresh meat. Their weakness was water, despite turning into a red liquid after dying.

On the other hand, the Neverending Prophecy was similar to Alex's Promised Pen and Book. The Promised Pen and Book has two forms, the [Promise] form, and the [Promised] form.

When the organization found the Promised Pen and Book, they thought it was a diary. The contents of the diary told a tale about a warrior falling in love with a beautiful woman.

In their world, a war broke out, and the woman became the man's enemy. Despite being in opposing factions, the two fell deeper in love, secretly meeting whenever they had the chance.

Together, they dreamed about a peaceful life. The woman didn't know how to write, so the man promised her that he would bring her a pen and a book to learn writing.

Together, they were supposed to write a book about their love for each other… Unfortunately, fate separated her from him. The woman died from the sword of her own king and swallowed by boiling rage, the man assassinated the king, becoming the hero of his country.

However, he couldn't find happiness. He'd sat under a tree that he and the woman used to enjoy the night sky together, before driving the woman's sword through his heart.

By writing on the book using the pen, Alex can make his intentions come true. It has limitations, and if he writes [kill everyone], an event will happen that may kill everyone, but the odds are low. However, if he instead writes [throw rocks at everyone], then it will happen with low chances of failing.

‘I still haven't mastered the [Promise] form,’ Alex sighed.

On the other hand, the Neverending Prophecy was a piece of paper. To use it, Ven has to tell the paper what “prophecy” he wants to create, and the prophecy will happen. Like the Promised Pen and Book, it has its limitations, but Ven refused to share it with others.

“Sir Ven told the Neverending Prophecy that the Dessert Guppies will eat the Ghostly Fish, their leader,” Alexandra reported, silently chuckling when Alex rubbed his forehead.

“Let me guess, the Dessert Guppies evolved?” Alex softly covered his face with one hand.

“Yes, sir.”

Alex paused, breathing steadily for a few moments before responding.

“Alright, what else? Bennett and Charles, what happened to those two?”

“Sir Bennet is currently helping sir Ven, but sir Charles has gone missing as soon as you left,” Alexndra closed her eyes. She could barely maintain her poker face, and she was afraid that she'd burst out laughing if she saw her brother get another headache.

“...Enough about the Moonlight Fools, what about the anomalies? How many agents have armed themselves with anomalies?”

“Not including the deceased twelve agents who were with you, sir, there are now fifteen agents who can use anomalies.”

“Only fifteen?”

After the previous Chief founded the organization, he forbade anyone from using the anomalies except for the Moonlight agents. However, Chief abused the ability of an anomaly called “New Heart,” using it on all of the agents to make their bodies stronger.

‘Luckily, New Heart is a plant, and it survived the destruction of the old headquarters.’

Alex smiled briefly at the organization’s luck.

“Let me meet the new elite agents,” Alex said, dismissing Alexandra.

‘The organization is weak, its members divided into three ranks and four factions.’

The lowest rank of the organization was the agents, followed by the elite agents, and finally the moonlight agents.

‘Most agents recognize me as the new Chief, while all the elite agents are under my control,’ Alex hummed. His headache was still present, but it was slowly dying down.

‘Some agents prefer Ven, Bennett, or Charles. On the other hand, all three of them could care less about the organization. They only want to finish Chief's last command—to exterminate the Anomalies.’

Alex sighed. Opening his eyes, he glanced down at his hands. For some reason, he felt that his body was going through a change.

It all started when he first used the Promised Pen and Book, and his only theory was that the Promised Pen and Book was doing something to his body.

‘It’s not that I'm becoming physically stronger, but my vitality is higher than ordinary humans. I can also do more things with the pen and book,’ Alex blinked. When he first used the Promised Pen and Book, he could only summon a weak breeze.

It wasn't only him, all the other Moonlight Agents were the same.

‘Maybe the change in my body is spiritual, making me able to use the anomaly's abilities better, or maybe forming a link between us.’

While he was busy with his thoughts, Alex heard a knock at the door. Alexandra soon entered, followed by fifteen elite agents.

All of them were using object-type anomalies, and all of them were wearing a dark blue uniform.

“Sir,” Alexandra bowed.

“Chief,” the elite agents bowed too.

‘Is it better to focus on stronger, more powerful agents, or is it better to have more agents who can use anomalies? A choice between quality or quantity’ Alex pondered, gazing silently at the agents before him.

Soon, however, he was brought out of his thoughts.

“The organization's goal remains the same. We are to eliminate the anomalies, starting from the colony-type anomalies,” Alex cleared his throat.

“The organization has gathered more intel about the youngest colony-type anomaly, C-107, the Swarm. Don't forget to review it,” Alex said, with all the elite agents nodding in affirmation.

“The Swarm's growth potential is the highest among the colony-type anomalies, making them our first target. Ordinary agents are not allowed to join the expedition, but you are allowed to bring one of your students to give them experience.”

The elite agents bowed. Alex allowed all of them to pick a few disciples to train. In due time, their disciples may become new elite agents, or succeed them if something goes south.

Being an agent was not a peaceful nor a safe job.

“Before we set out, I need to know how proficient you are with using your anomalies. The previous twelve I had with me were all incompetent fools. Do not become another one of them,” Alex threatened, his stoic face resembling that of a frozen demon's frown.

The elite agents, however, felt no malice in Alex's voice.

“We will not disappoint you, Chief,” the elite agents said in unison.

“Sir,” Alexandra merely nodded.

At the same time, in an underground chamber, military personnel were running about, doing their own specific tasks.

“So the agents have appointed a new Chief,” the military head smirked.

“Gerald raised a few good students, but only one of them resembles him. I wonder how you feel, my friend,” he mumbled.

“Sir, an unknown mail was sent to us,” a woman wearing complete battle gear walked up to him, handing him a communication device.

[Hello. This is Rex, T-Rex! Haha, get it?]

The military head frowned. “What's this bastard up to now? Jimmuel must be rolling around in his coffin,” he shook his head.

“Oh wait, Jimmuel is still alive… right?”

Turning toward the woman, he saw her shrug. He also shrugged. Jimmuel's betrayal to the organization didn't just harm the organization, it also sent great panic to the united government.

“Whatever—”

[I'm here to talk, well my voice is. I want my brother back, and alive. The organization full of shit-ass is keeping him away from me, and I want your help. In return, I will show you how I tamed the Sunlight Sparrows]

The voicemail ended, leaving the military head speechless.

“Did he just try using us to destroy the organization? That's like telling a father to kill his son in return for being their new son!”

Cackling loudly, the head military gave the communication device back to the woman and dismissed her.
