Even though Kai and his team didn't encounter any trouble en route to the capital from the North, he was shocked to discover upon his return home a few days later that the Capital was placed on red alert.
The truth was, just a few days ago, on the very next day after Kai had vanquished Amon, insurgent attacks had sprung all across the Central Continent, supposedly committed in the name of the Chaos Legion.
Even though the Kingdoms were prepared for an assault from the Chaos Legion, the speed and nature of the attacks had caught them all by surprise.
After all, the soldiers of the Kingdoms were well trained in conventional warfare, but the Chaos Legion struck with small splinter cells instead, with the aim of maximising destruction rather than capturing territory.
This made it extremely difficult for the soldiers to retaliate or defend against the insurgents, as they had immediately escaped after achieving their objective of destruction. Even if they managed to catch or kill a few of these insurgents, the attacks never stopped coming.
As a result, it was only a matter of time that resistance against the guerrillas waned in the face of despair, and quite a couple of villages and even a few small cities surrendered to the will of the Chaos Legion in exchange for survival and peace of mind.
Even the reclusive Sylph Kingdom was not spared, though the Sylphs maintained their resistance against the invaders of the Chaos Legion. However, even the formidable Sylph Army was pushed to its limit, as the ranks of the Chaos Legion never seemed to deplete.
Even though the capital was placed under red alert, just like the 3rd Holy War 2 years ago, the citizens of Nirvana resumed their lives as usual, albeit with added vigilance as King Stormfury wanted to minimise disruption to civilian life.
Kai's team of students returned to school at Zion Academy, as lessons carried on despite the looming threat of the Chaos Legion. Meanwhile, Kai, Adeline and Akame were scheduled to meet Headmaster Zilean to conduct their debrief and assessment of the performance of the students.
During the meeting, Kai swiftly skimmed through the minor details of their mission as well as the assessment of his students, which he rated everyone as excellent for rising against the odds and accomplishing the mission successfully against opponents much more experienced than them.
Finally, the time had come for Kai's main point in his debrief. Kai said slowly, "Headmaster Zilean, you may not believe it, but this mission which you had sent us was exceptionally dangerous yet rewarding. After all, the guerrillas whom we fought turned out to be remnants of the Chaos Legion led by the Chaos General of Wrath, Amon."
Headmaster Zilean nearly choked on his coffee when he heard Kai's proclamation as he coughed, "Unbelievable...I've heard that your team sustained a lot of injuries in this mission, don't tell me..."
Kai nodded grimly and said, "Yes, we encountered the Chaos General of Wrath himself with his direct subordinates. The battle was extremely fierce, but we managed to emerge victorious with a little stroke of luck. However, what's more important was what we uncovered at the secret base of those guerrillas.
Though it was relatively empty, one piece of information that we think could be vital for our national interests was found on the wall beneath straw. The information is recorded down in this map of the Central Continent below."
Kai passed a piece of rolled up parchment to the Headmaster who unfurled it slowly, only to see circles marking certain locations on the map with labels at their sides. Apart from circles, there were also arrows spreading out from the circles, as though to symbolise some sort of advance and conquest.
Headmaster Zilean scrutinised the map heavily before gasping, "Don't tell me these are the secret locations of our enemy HQs all over the Central Continent?"
Kai replied confidently, "When I first saw these markings on the wall, I knew they were detailing locations of places on the Central Continent, but I couldn't confirm that they were referring to our enemy bases. That was, until I spotted this."
Kai pointed to a circle located in Northern Nirvania, the very location that his team had discovered Amon's secret base. Beside the circle, the label read "Wrath". Kai continued, "Since this location corresponds to the secret base of the Chaos General of Wrath, it's safe to assume that the other locations are the secret bases of the other Chaos Generals.
The labels aren't hard to interpret if you know how the Chaos Generals are named. During this mission, I learnt that the Chaos Generals are named after the 7 deadly sins, hence the presence of labels like "Lust" and "Greed". However, one issue still remains after knowing all this information."
Being sharp as usual, Headmaster Zilean answered, "Let me guess, there's one secret base missing, the base of the Chaos General of Pride, right?" Kai nodded, "You're right, sir. Though this is a huge concern, the absence of this piece of information opens the door to other possible speculations.
We can infer from this that the Chaos General of Pride is likely the leader, or at least the figure of greatest importance in the Chaos Legion since information about him was not made privy to the lower echelons of the Chaos Legion.
Of course, we cannot discount the fact that perhaps, the Chaos General of Pride has no secret base of his own, but I think this possibility is highly unlikely. It makes more sense that his location is kept the greatest secret made known to only the Chaos Generals, since this location could very well be the Chaos Legion's higher HQ."
If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
Headmaster Zilean stroked his beard as he mused, "Interesting deductions. Nonetheless, the information which you have on hand now possibly far exceeds those that had been collected by the Nirvanian Black Ops and the Crimson Sentinels thus far.
I would relay this information to Chief General Hargreaves and Baron Marcus, both whom are in the capital to discuss countermeasures against the Chaos Legion. Looks like another Convention of the Saints will be held soon."
Kai and Adeline's jaws dropped while Akame remained stoic. Kai stammered, "I understand that this is a matter of grave importance, but is it really that easy to mobilise the 10 Saints? I thought they were pretty reclusive people who were difficult to contact, especially the 4 Coloured Kings?"
Headmaster Zilean laughed as he explained, "The 10 Saints were placed on standby for quite some time already, including the 4 Coloured Kings. In fact, the 4 Coloured Kings are all already in Nirvana as we speak, together with most of the other Saints.
Kai, you may be summoned to give a brief of the information collected during the Convention, especially since you had obtained it after defeating one of the Chaos Generals. I suggest you prepare properly, you won't want to embarrass yourself in front of the 10 Saints, the Chief General and most importantly, King Stormfury right?"
Kai nodded nervously before Headmaster Zilean concluded, "That'll be all for now. I'll inform you if your attendance is required, which is highly likely. Thank you for your hard work and excellent performance, but more importantly, for successfully bringing back your entire team home safely."
Kai bowed in respect as Adeline and Akame followed suit, before swiftly taking his leave. When they were outside earshot, Akame asked, "So, what're your plans now, Kai? Being the busybody you've always been, you've certainly got something up your mind, right?"
Kai replied without emotion, "It can't be helped. Once the Convention of the Saints is settled, I intend to uphold my promise to the person who had helped me awaken the triple fusion element within me. Believe it or not, this person was Amaterasu, the Goddess of Order and Creation who had helped create this world."
Akame and Adeline froze in their tracks before Akame burst out laughing, "Hey, I was just joking when I said that your self-inflicted electric shock had reconfigured your brain, don't take this joke too far hahaha! Goddess? I believe in demons and celestials, but I ain't believing in gods!"
Adeline frowned in response to Akame's thoughtless remarks as she added, "Akame, I think we ought to let Kai finish his explanation before we ridicule him. I mean, I think there's a certain level of truth behind his words, since no one had ever achieved what Kai has done a few days ago, not demon nor celestial. Kai, please, carry on."
Kai ignored Akame as he continued, "The Goddess is currently powerless and unable to intervene in our world, whereas her brother, the God of Chaos and Destruction, Astaroth, also leader of the Chaos Legion, is on the verge of reviving.
Yes, all these assaults by the Chaos Legion are not for the purpose of conquering territory, but rather to breed enmity and negativity that would fuel Astaroth's revival. This is the main purpose of the Chaos Legion, to do anything in their power to usher the return of their master."
Akame stopped laughing as she could sense the seriousness in Kai's tone. She then asked, "Okay, assuming that everything you've said is true. What did the Goddess entrust to you? If gods really exist, how can a mortal like yourself do anything about them?"
Kai exhaled slowly as he explained, "You're right. If Astaroth is to return right now, none of us, not even the 10 Saints would stand a chance against him, I believe. That's why I was tasked to find someone who could take the fight to him, the last remaining deity of this world, the God of Life and Death, Grimm Haven."
Both Akame and Adeline remained silent as they struggled to absorb the information presented as Kai went on, "Amaterasu told me that it wouldn't be easy, but I could enlist the help of her Point of Contact in this world, a person by the name of Kuroka Blake. Furthermore, I think I might have some idea on where to start looking.
Akame, remember how my biological father, Redmond, kept talking about Balthazar, the Right Hand of Death? I suspect that this demon might have a connection with the God of Life and Death, so if we locate him, he might lead us to the deity himself. A solid plan, right?"
Akame remained silent for a while before speaking slowly, "Do. You. Know. Who. Kuroka Blake is? She's the #1 Saint, the Black King Blake! Oh god, I hope your delusions are true, because it's going to be so awkward if you approach her for help during the Convention of Saints and it turns out that this encounter with Amaterasu was just a figment of your imagination.
Anyway, enough of that worrying. You want to meet Balthazar? Locating him isn't hard, but the trip's going to be. The Dark Continent is not a place for the weak-willed, as the island is subjected to extreme conditions such as intense gravity.
It was so bad that during our last expedition there, your father, Redmond, only brought a handful of men from Clan Vizard with him, and they were all the cream of the crop in terms of physical condition. Hmph, you may have gained a new power, but I don't think your body is physically strong enough to endure the stress that the island would put onto your body.
Truth be told, even I couldn't run as fast as I'd liked when I was on that island, for the gravity there was so immense that I laboured to even walk quickly. The inhabitants of the island, at least the demons we saw, were all so accustomed to the conditions present that they could not only walk with ease, but also fly.
That's the challenge awaiting you on the Dark Continent, Kai. Even before the Dark Continent, a huge expanse of ocean awaits, its waters extremely treacherous to unwary seafarers. You may have defeated a Chaos General, but don't let that achievement get into your head!"
Adeline was about to interrupt indignantly when Kai stopped her, responding calmly, "You're right. I'm still weak, even with my [Vermillion Spark]. Heck, I don't think I can even beat you one-on-one, Akame. However, my weakness isn't going to stop me from doing the right thing. In fact, I think I'm going to relish this challenge, for if I survive against it, I would have grown a far stronger man than before. Nonetheless, I would need all the help I can get. You guys with me?"
Adeline replied quickly, "Even though I'm concerned with what's going on in the Sylph Kingdom, I believe that helping your cause would indirectly be in the interest of my home. Furthermore, we're a couple that sticks together through adversity. I'm in."
Akame sighed, "I don't have much of a choice, do I? Your father assigned me to be your personal escort, so wherever you go, I follow. Just promise me you won't be rash throughout our trip. I really hope you're right about Black King Blake, because it would be a lot easier if she were to take charge instead of you."
Kai heaved a sigh of relief before grinning widely, "It's settled then. Another adventure, a step hopefully closer to salvation. Let's pray that this God of Life and Death can really aid our cause in protecting this world from the Chaos Legion."
Adeline and Akame nodded before the trio made their way out of Zion Academy, an enormous tribulation awaiting them after the conclusion of the Convention of the Saints.
