Scene Three ─ The Girls & The Chasers Pt.1-2

Jensen did not immediately leave after his speech. At first he patched up his wound, then stayed in the drilling room to watch the recruits perform one-on-one sessions. One attacks with the Shell Lance, and the other blocks with the Shell Wall.

He walked along the walls of the room, watching their movements as he contemplated. He wasn't sure if his speech matches the expectations of his superiors. However, the rookies did seem more spirited and driven after it was delivered. Of course, it could have been only because there were senior officers around.

It has been days, but the frustration remained in Jensen's heart. The frustration of being beaten and perplexed. He knew nothing about the scavengers. Neither was he able to guess what their intention was.

It was merely that looking at the youngbloods around him more or less provided distraction. It also helped him to stop being so fixated on his failure. Whether it was voluntary or compelled, at least the rookies were still fighting for the Sheer's future still. It made him feel like it wasn't the best timing to get carried away.

Sahil, you old fox.

Jensen thought. Perhaps this was the reason why he was called hither. He was just walking when he heard the noise of some rapid clashing of shells. He turned, only to find two trainees fighting vigorously. The man stopped in his tracks.

He had originally thought they were going back and forth, crisscrossing the attacks and defenses. However, it seemed like it was more like one side was desperately trying to block the blows from the other.

Jensen frowned and started towards the pair. Typically, he would try to avoid interrupting the training sessions. That's the class intructor's job after all, and he was here to look around only anyway.

The two's movements were too eye-catching though. Also, he had rarely seen girls train in such an aggressive way.

The girls noticed Jensen approaching. They stopped and saluted.

"What's your name?" Jensen asked one of them. "And you?" He shifted his eyes to the other.

"Hanister Dyner, sir." The girl commanding the Shell Lance answered.

"Gadina, sir." The other answered after removing her Shell Wall.

"Do you usually command the shells in such a violent way, Hanister?" Jensen asked one of the girls. "Have you realized that your movements and breaths are both very uncoordinated?" He asked, deeply concerned.

"Besides, it's only a drill. There's no need to be so aggressive."

"Sir, I-"

"Are you sworn enemies?"

"No, sir." The girl answered after a second.

"Then minimize your movements," Jensen said. "Being impulsive and reckless will do you no good. Shell Wielding is a meticulous, elegant technique." He looked straight into her eyes, noticing the flow of emotions in them. It was some kind of resentment being constrained. But the anger wasn't directed to herself.

Jensen wasn't surprised. He sees this kind of reaction on new Shell Wielding learners all the time. Besides, they were all in the prime of youth. "Don't be affected by your emotions, Hanister. Especially the negative ones." He reminded as someone who had personally experienced it. "The Star Creatures are our enemies, but there's no need to get all worked up for it. Focus on regulating your breaths, and then you'll be able to defeat them."

"But sir, I don't think they are as intelligent as we are." Hanister contended on strong grounds. Once she had finished, the girl opposed to her sent a glare screaming 'are you crazy?'

"You're correct." Jensen answered, not taking her response as a contradiction. "Star Creatures aren't smart." He glanced at the Shell Lance floating beside the girl before shifting his attention back. "But if you're over-conceited by emotions, you might just be as stupid as they are."

The girl was dumbstruck, unable to retort.

"Do you understand, trainee?"

"Yes, sir." Hanister then responded immediately, saluting once again.

Jensen nodded and headed to the door, leaving the two behind.

Observing the training sessions of the new recruits did make him feel hopeful towards the future. However, there was still a lot for them to learn before becoming extraordinary Chasers.
