Chapter 34 - I Want My Mummy!

Chapter 34 - I Want My Mummy!

He approached the horde again, but instead of the caution he had previously displayed he began running full tilt towards them. Powerful strides helped him close the distance between him and the undead by more than half by the time they could react and send another wave of fire towards him. With another use of his [Spirit of Death] he cleaved most of the flames out of his path before they could hit him, and he barreled through the rest at a breakneck pace. He was sure the speeds he was going at were damaging his muscles in some way, but without the sensation of pain and with the threat of his muscles refusing to function mitigated by his Merged Spirit being able to make him move he found that he didn't care.

Them, he was upon them before they could launch a second offense against him. His axe, glowing with absorbed power, fell upon the first skeletons to enter his reach. Bolstered by Fire Energy and his active Power, it carved a wide gap in the undead's ranks and scattered broken bones and twisted metal across the passageway. His second strike lacked the explosive force of his first, but it was still more than enough to decimate any of the skeletons that got in his way. The black mist of his Spirit extended the reach of his massacre, causing no visible impact but instead ripping the mana sustaining the undead out from them and into the air for his axe to absorb.

He spared a glance towards the flamming mummies to see that they were still a few steps away from being able to interfere. They were both picking up a small amount of speed as the charged towards him, but with how far he had penetrated into enemy ranks he would get in another few strikes before they would reach him. In his moment of distraction as he assessed the situation, a fireball from one of the [Unknown Skeletal Mages] crashed into him from the side. His shield flicked into existence to protect him as flames wrapped around him, preventing any damage but unable to stop the impact from knocking him a couple steps to the side.

He struck out once more to clear the nearest undead before he whirled to face the closest mummy. He might've been unharmed by the Mage's attack but it had forced him close enough to one of the lumbering giants that he couldn't continue his onslaught. It raised its arms above its head before stepping towards him and bringing them down in a deceptively fast motion. His axe rose to meet them in a manoeuvre that was more of an attack than a block but it still had the intended affect. They clashed and Liam lost, the additional power from swinging downwards as opposed to up too much for him to overcome. Luckily, his resistance had bought him enough time to step aside and out of the way of the continuation of the large undead's downwards arc.

Recovering quickly, he brought his weapon about and cut into the side of the creature, tearing through flaming bandages until it hit what was underneath. Slowed down by the layers of burning fabric, he only managed to leave a shallow wound before he was forced to retreat by it turning and swinging at him in the same motion. He leapt back even further to avoid two more fireballs hurtling his way and took stick of the situation.

The skeletal battalion was in disarray, with piles of the fallen blocking the others from properly making their way towards him. Maybe if they were unencumbered by their equipment they would be able to scramble over the scattered bones and metal without falling, but their empty skulls would never allow them to think of that solution. It did, however, seem like they were starting to give up on the melee approach now that he was engaged with one of the mummies and were preparing to start their bombardment again. Since there were quite a few less of them it wouldn't be anywhere near as deadly, but it was still something to watch out for.

He ducked and stepped to the side as he spotted something flying towards him from the corner of his eye. He almost completely dodged it, but it was just too fast and managed to graze his shield, draining it more. The attack over, he saw that what had hit him was an unraveled, flaming bandage thrown by the other mummy. He watched as it retracted back to the creature's arm almost as fast as it had been thrown.

'Of course they have a ranged attack.'

He thought.

'Things can never be just simple and easy.'

Still, he took it in stride and filed the information away to held with his combat plans. He hadn't expected it this time, but he wouldn't leave himself open to it again.

Now facing two of the behemoths, he was going to have to be much more cautious with the moves he made. If one of them landed a blow it would likely send him reeling for long enough that the other would be able to follow up and if that happened then the consequences would be deadly.

He circled around them, dodging another fireball and reactivating his Spirit of Death Power as its timer went out. He tried to keep one in the way of the other but with the limited space he had to manoeuvre in due to the piles of bone and metal and the still living skeletons attempting to roast him alive, he was finding it difficult. His shield was barely holding on against the ever present flames that were assaulting him from every direction no matter where he went and his enemies were now as organized as undead could be. What had started off as a slaughter was now an uphill battle, but he had been down in this hellhole for long enough and he was ready to push through anything that stood in the way of him leaving.

He sized up the mummies approaching him, cataloguing everything he knew they could do, and the beginnings of a plan began to form in his mind. Sure, they were tough, but if there was one thing he excelled at after his recent Class Acquisition it was causing damage.
