The journey to the mist

The journey to the mist

At the edge of the dark forest

The baby Wolf saw its pack and with its tail wagging, jumped on a grey-white wolf in the group while two dark grey wolves joined them in a group hug. Another dark grey wolf along with its pack leader observed the pack from a distance.

The wolves all howled and enjoyed the reunion a bit longer and after they were done, turned towards the large Panther for further directions. They knew that returning to their homeland was impossible for the time being and were hoping to find a new home with the Panther's help.

The Panther nodded at them and directed the kids towards a nearby mountain.

“There is a lot of snow on that mountain, go check it out” she suggested causing the kids to jump for joy. With the threat of vampires gone, the kids wanted something to distract their minds from the horrible past and a large mountain of snow was just the thing that they needed. They rushed towards the mountain, leaving the adults to worry about their future.

They discussed for hours as the wolves suggested their plans while howling and in the end, they all came to the same conclusion.

”so, we have to go to the misty forest, huh” The mother panther sighed and glanced at the snowy mountain range in front of them.

The misty forest was a large forest located inside the human territory just north of Altraud. There were only two ways available for them to reach it. One was through the city which was impossible for obvious reasons and the other was by crossing the snowy mountain range. The problem however was that the mountain range was a desolate land devoid of any life and the climate was highly unfavourable.

The dark forest behind them was eerily quiet and with no choice left the mother Panther decided to scale the mountains.

She informed the others about her decision as the 3 baby beasts, 1 large Panther and 5 wolves set out towards the north.

Back in the dark forest.

The Vampire King kept his work and did not attack for 10 min but as soon as the time was done he fired his skill immediately after which a tsunami of blood flowed out from under his feet and killed all the beasts it came into contact with.

They all died in an instant without even registering the feeling of pain. It was truly a painless death.

“Well, at least they didn't suffer, whatever you did is going to make those poor creatures suffer a lot” Charon said to Veld while staring at the blood bath from a distance.

Veld scoffed at his brother's comment and walked away from that place.

At the base of the snowy mountain range

“Wow, it's so big meow!” the baby Panther exclaimed while staring in awe at the mountain ahead of it.

The mountain was large and snow-filled with a frozen lake and many tunnels scattered throughout it. The sky was dark yet the snow glowed mysteriously, providing a clear path for the beasts to follow.

The baby beasts jumped right in and ran along the path in the mountain range while the adults warily followed behind them.

The initial few days of travel were uneventful and a dark grey wolf used the time to play with the babies to its heart's content. It carried them around the forest and hopped around with them for a total of 4 days.

That was when the problems began, a hailstorm poured down from the sky and forced them to stop their journey.

They all hid under a tunnel and waited for the storm to dissipate but it lasted for a whole day.

With nothing else to do the kids finally asked the one thing that the adults dreaded about,

“Mom, we are hungry, meow. Give us food” the baby Panther asked while patting its shrunken stomach.

The babies had tried to bear the hunger but after 4 days of not eating anything they had enough and just wanted something to eat. The adults glanced at each other and finally, the dark grey Wolf that was playing with the kids stepped up and chose to go out to hunt for food along with the grey-white Wolf.

The kids cheered for them but the adults gave a melancholic look to the dark grey Wolf as they walked away.

A day later the grey-white wolf returned while dragging a lump of meat. The meat was just that a lump, with no head, tail or even skin. The kids' mouths watered at the sight of the meat and they ate it to their heart's content. The adults just watched from the side with a conflicted look.

It was only after they were done eating that the kids remembered about the adults around them but it was already too late and no meat was left to eat.

“I-I am sorry Mom” the baby Panther apologized with a downcast look and asked the puppy to sniff for any leftover meat but the cold environment made its sense of smell useless making the group of kids more depressed by the second.

Unable to see them like that the mother Panther let out a sigh and consoled them.

“Don't worry, the other Wolf is still out hunting. He will catch up to us along the way and bring us food, for now, let's resume our journey” she suggested and walked out.

The kids were still a bit down so to cheer them up another dark grey Wolf carried them and played with them along the way.

Now the party was reduced to 1 Panther, 3 kids and 4 wolves

The journey went smoothly for another 3 days but on the night of the 3rd day, the baby crow couldn't endure the intense cold any longer and collapsed forcing the others to take a break.

With nothing else to do, the dark grey wolf that played with the kids and the grey-white wolf went out to hunt.

They resumed their journey a day later and after some time the grey-white wolf returned with another lump of meat to feed the kids.

They jumped in to eat but stopped and asked the adults to eat first this time. The adults hesitated and in the end, refused to eat the meat.

“We are not feeling hungry, you guys continue”

The kids felt that something was wrong upon hearing the mother Panther say that but they couldn't guess what was wrong. In the end, they gave up on thinking and enjoyed the meal.

The party had 1 Panther, 3 kids and 3 wolves.

They travelled for a few more days and again were forced to rest because of a blizzard. During that time a dark grey Wolf played and spent time with them.

Even after the blizzard subsided the weather was too cold for the kids so they stayed in a cave and let the wolves go out and hunt. Again only the grey-white wolf returned.

“What happened to the other wolves? Why are they not coming back” the baby Panther asked in concern but the adults brushed his concerns off by saying that they were just lost because of the cold weather and would return by the end of the journey.

The kids still felt something was wrong so the grey-white wolf joined them to ease their worries.

Now the party had 1 Panther, 3 kids and 2 wolves.

A few days went uneventfully again but by the end of another 4 days the adults in the group looked like nothing more than bones and skin, they hadn't eaten anything for a long time and the hunger was killing them from the inside, the kids recognised this and suggested to take a break so that they can go hunt and eat something.

This time the grey-white wolf and the pack leader Wolf went out to hunt with only the pack leader returning a day later with a lump of meat. The problem however was that he did a poor job of skinning the dead beasts and it had rough patches of grey-white skin all over its body.

“What are you doing, the kids won't eat her if they see this” the mother Panther screamed at the guilty Wolf but he was just too heartbroken to answer, his face was covered in tears and snot as he remembered the final moments of his prey.

The mother Panther felt the same but had no time to waste. The kids needed food and in the barren land of snow they had no choice but to do what they did.

The large Panther and the unwilling wolf skinned the beast and removed all the grey-white fur from the dead body. While they were doing that the kids rushed out and misunderstood that the adults were eating the food.

“You are finally eating, thank god meow” the baby Panther cheered and the others nodded before looking at the crying wolf.

“Why are you crying, is something wrong” the baby Panther asked but the wolf quietly shook his head.

“He is just happy to get something to eat after so many days, you don't need to worry” the large Panther explained and passed the lump of meat to them. “We are done eating, you guys carry on” she said and walked away with the other wolf.

The kids dug in and ate the food while the adults hid around a corner of the cave and cried their hearts out.

The party was reduced to 1 Panther, 3 kids and 1 wolf.
