Dungeon Overseers

Undead City - Altraud

Inner city, dungeon tomb

Arya stood still on the magic circle that acted as the entrance to the minor dungeon. The circle was still glowing, unearthing her many deeply hidden memories, making Arya re-experience the most unforgettable moments of her life.....

3 years ago, inside the great city named Coeusville.

Arya stood at the entrance of her mansion and stared fixedly at the moon. After a few seconds, she emerged out of the shades of the mansion and exposed her hands to its light, causing it to burn. She winced in pain but did not retract her hand. Her activated passively, attempting to heal the burns but the constant exposure to light made the healing ineffective.

Arya smiled amidst the pain, ' I can finally disappear ' she thought, but reality proved to be different, a ghostly black hue emerged from her injured hand and prevented any further damage while the regeneration repaired the damage.

Frustrated she fell limply on the ground and asked herself, ' Why? Why can't I die peacefully? '

Precisely when it looked like all hope was lost, a tall red tower caught her attention. To her eyes, it appeared like the tip of the tower was touching the moon.

She bolted towards the tower hoping that a fatal dose of moonlight would free her of her misery.

Arya entered the 500m tall red tower, made out of red marble stones, and searched for stairs to ascend the tower. The people inside the tower spared her a glance and then completely ignored her, bringing their attention back to the books they were carrying. Every person inside the tower carried at least one book.

Soon enough, Arya found the stairs and started her climb to the top, Midway through however, she was stopped by a blue-haired, orange-red-eyed man- Sirius.

Sirius observed the girl in front of him, She had deep blue hair similar to his, but quite a few strands of her hair had already turned black, and her blood-red eyes stared back at him with no visible emotions.

"Arya? Am I right?"

Arya briskly nodded while looking at the still numerous steps she needed to climb to reach the top.

"You need authorisation to move to the next floor"

His statement made Arya's steps pause, but after a second she resumed her climb, not caring about the restricted access.

"Why do you want to die?" Sirius asked while observing her recovering hands.

Apathetically glancing back she sighed,

"I have nothing to live for, my father never cared about me, my mother wished for me to disappear, I have no friends, and even the few people around me think I am cursed. Can anyone live in solitude their entire life?"

Sirius followed her on her journey to the top while listening to her reasons to die.

"Yes " he answered while placing a hand on her head, " they are called 'Dungeon Overseers ', creatures that live their entire life in solitude. They exist"

"And, should I sympathise with them?"

"No, but try to learn about them, and about yourself" he lifted his hand off her head and continued "I too hate you, but my sister, your mother, she loved you"

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Arya's steps stopped, she turned back and gawked at him, only to find him staring at her with pity in his eyes.

"My mother, she wished for me to disappe-"

"She wished for you to never be born, not for you to disappear" Sirius cut her mid-sentence and spoke.

"What's the difference? It's the same thing"

"No, they are not. She loved you, that is a fact. When she was pregnant, a royal healer said that her child was too weak and wouldn't survive for more than 5 years. She couldn't bear the thought of seeing her child die at such a young age, so she wished that you were never born "

Arya's heart raced as she processed the new information, her knees bucked, head spun, and she fell on her all four limbs. Drained of any strength she succumbed to unconsciousness...

A few hours after falling unconscious, Arya groggily opened her eyes and observed her surroundings, finding herself lying on a comfy bed in a small room that was not highly decorated but was still beautiful.

She glanced towards her left and found Sirius, lazily sitting on a chair and studying a book about 'trio battle league'. Sensing that she woke up, Sirius closed the book and questioned,

"Do you have something to ask?"

"I want to know, why? Why did Mother say those things before her death? Why did she die? Why did Father ignore us? And many more"

Sirius smiled and stretched his arms.

"Ask those questions to your mother, not me"

"She is dead"

Sirius got up from his chair and went to a nearby bookshelf, picked a book and passed it to Arya. The book read ' Dungeon Overseers and Equality Exchange '.

Arya skimmed through its contents, her astonishment increasing with each second. She glanced at Sirius with an expectant look.

"That book is about dungeon overseers. They are incredibly strong creatures that live in the depths of the major dungeon and oversee them. These overseers have a unique skill called . That means as long as you sacrifice something important to you, there is a chance to even meet your dead mother"....

Back in the present, undead city, dungeon tomb

The glow of the magic circle under Arya's feet dimmed and finally after it became low enough, Arya's body faded as she entered the dungeon.

Training grounds

Ervin took out the new golden-black bow that he received from the armoury and aimed at a distant target.

He pulled the bowstring, causing a metallic arrow to magically appear in its place. He then released the string, sending the arrow flying towards its target.

The arrow hit a target that was 100m away from Erwin.

Satisfied Ervin turned to a nearby undead. It had a short stature, only 130cm tall, but it made up for its lack of height with its bulk. Its body framework looked similar to that of a dwarf and it was carrying a large war hammer on its shoulders.

"Brat, are you satisfied with it" the undead dwarf asked, receiving a nod in reply.

"Yes Mr. Jack, the arrows are strong" Ervin answered, his gaze fixed on the bow.

"That arrow is effective only against opponents weaker than you, against anyone stronger, it's nothing more than a scrap metal. Remember that " Jack reminded and walked away.

Ervin bowed his head and then observed his surroundings. A few small undead were peeking at the undead grounds and looking at his practice with the bow. Smiling he approached them and placed his hand on one of the undead, making it squeal in joy.

"Do you want to learn?" He asked the undead, getting hurried nods in reply.

"Grow healthily and I will teach you. Together we will protect the city, and not let a single newborn be harmed"

The small undead's eyes shone with vigour as they rushed out to play and grow old quickly.

Ervin sighed while looking at the departing undead and tightened his grip on the bow.

Undead city-Altraud

Inside the central white grave.

Arthur was sitting on his throne and reading a newspaper. It read,

'Vampire attack on Edinburg fort unsuccessful, miss Fiona successfully defends the fort'

He chuckled reading the news and muttered " Looks like that girl is doing just fine".

As he was reading his grave roof opened, and Paul- the death reaper entered the grave.

"Hey Paul, done with your work?" Arthur asked surprised about the sudden visit.

"No, that never ends. Anyway that girl, Arya, why did you send her into the dungeon alone?"

"She is not alone, our two champions will follow her" Arthur grinned while looking at him, but Paul was puzzled.

"Why not make them a team?"

"I can't, They won a challenge against me and chose to work alone " Arthur shrugged and continued reading.

"Please, you lost that on purpose. But why?"

"Because I don't want to forcefully make them teammates, let them get to know each other and voluntarily form a team. Only such teams can help them grow to their full potential" Arthur answered without taking his eyes off the newspaper.

Paul just sighed "Will she be ok, going into the dungeon all alone?" he asked worriedly.

"You worry too much, go, do your work" Arthur sent him away and contemplated on his future endeavours.
