Chapter 2 [Old]

Though when thinking about it, I was actually a hero. If I hadn’t cleared that dungeon, a noob team would’ve come without knowing the boss was unique and gotten annihilated. So some people owe me a thank you! I imagined some familiar faces, but it made me more irritated than anything else.

Thanks for that. I was more motivated to clear this dungeon.

I tried getting my mind on the right track again and thinking about it logically. What was the chance of a boss being unbeatable? This was a game, in all honesty, and every game was meant to be completed. So I didn’t need to overthink how dangerous it could be. The only thing I needed to do was open the door and take everything as it came. Continue with careful steps, and everything would probably be fine.

“No need to worry,” I said and smiled as I lightly touched the big door.

Creaking—!

The old door opened slowly, and a long, high pitch resonated through the surrounding area.

Well, that wasn’t my plan. I took myself to the head, pained about how the situation could already have been so dire.

My original plan was to gradually creep my way into the room and scout around the area, so I knew what I had to deal with. But who knew that the door would open fully just with one slight touch? Not me.

But that didn’t matter. It was already too late.

But why is it so dark? I questioned as I carefully stepped my first foot inside of the room after the door fully opened. Ah!

As I entered, hundreds of lights suddenly shone all around me. Looking like stars in the sky, I saw exactly how big the room really was. The light sources trailed hundreds of meters to each side, and the one furthest away was barely visible to my eyes.

Oh, wow! I stood with my mouth wide open, admiring every detail. Not only was this room the biggest I had ever been in, but the architecture was simply out of this world.

Brick walls resembling a castle surrounded the whole room. And with decorations like paintings, flowers, and different war prizes, there were no empty spaces. Giant pillars made of the same bricks as the wall towered high into the air, catching the cave-like roof and holding it in place.

It was definitely something to admire, but I wondered who could have built such a magnificent castle—

My body froze in motion. Suddenly the same menacing feeling struck me again, but this time, much worse!

I didn’t want to turn around. But at the same time, I couldn’t stand there like a statue forever. Could I?

But how? My body wouldn’t move. It seemed like I was too frightened to move a single muscle. Why? I hadn’t even seen what awaited me yet. Though, to be honest, I didn’t want to know. In these kinds of situations, I just wished that I could be under my warm duvet at home, drinking a warm cup of tea. Not that I particularly like tea, and I don’t even own a house, but if I did, I would’ve wanted to do those things in that moment.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

I might’ve been overreacting a little, just like when I thought the door to the boss room would attack me. So there was probably no reason to be this scared. I was the strongest player in that world if I haven’t already told you that. So beating a boss in a D-ranked dungeon shouldn’t have been a problem.

I turned around slowly.

“Oh f*ck! What are you doing here?”

It couldn’t be! No wonder I had constant chills!

A big throne, at least ten meters wide sat in front of me. It had spears and swords jutting out of it, impaling corpses and skeletons. It was definitely not your typical throne. Especially not when compared to the rest of the interior of this castle or whatever it was. Everything was neatly placed around the area, organized like it was a place people came to frequent. But the throne and surrounding objects were a mess, standing out an otherwise clean room.

He was a monster, only slightly smaller than the biggest monster I had ever encountered. And that’s to say I had fought against a colossal dragon before. It sat on top of the throne, boasting its enormous size. It cloaked itself in a blackish aura that spread around its body like it was on fire. Though I couldn’t see the entirety of its body, I knew exactly what it was.

“A Lich King…” I mumbled to myself.

Shivering, distress could be heard in my voice. I knew I had done something in my life to end up in here of all places. But where did I go wrong? Maybe when I decided to leisurely walk into a dungeon I knew had a chance to be a special one?

But no matter what, I had to defeat it somehow, or I was going to die.

I wanted to formulate a plan, so I slowly walked further inside the room and near the Lich King. I needed to equip my daggers, right? I couldn’t be sure that he would continue to sit on his throne doing nothing. Same as last time, the black mist lasted no longer than a second, and my two blood-red daggers replaced it.

Now I was ready to fight! With all my gear equipped, I only needed a plan on how to defeat this monster. But that was easier said than done.

I was exceptionally good at appraising stuff, so guessing how much of a chance I even had shouldn’t have been a problem. However, just roughly looking at all the information I knew about this Lich King…

Nine players in this world stood on top as the strongest of all the rest. They were called the Nine Pillars. And I knew they once defeated a Lich King. However, they were nine, and I was only me. So it wasn’t going to be easy to beat an S-rank monster by myself, yet there was still a chance.

I had calculated that my chances of winning a fight against this monster were surprisingly high: 0.1 percent chance… I was way too optimistic about that, wasn’t I? But at least there was still hope. Unless it was zero, my hope would never die. I would keep holding on to the slightest thread of faith in myself no matter how dire of a situation I stood in.

I guess that’s why I was the strongest player? But either way. He might’ve looked very intimidating at first. However, every monster had a weakness, even this one. So if I used that to my advantage, winning might not be too far-fetched.

I might’ve been too optimistic about my chances, and instead, I should’ve probably run. But dungeons did have a property that forced people to enter, unable to leave before you or the boss were dead. And if you chose the former, you’d be entering a new domain called Heaven or Hell. Though they sounded interesting, there was no way to leave those places.

So I only had two choices: either kill it or be killed. And since I didn’t have any plans on dying before I completed this game, this motherf*cker would die!

Any feelings I had before, regret or fright, had all disappeared and been replaced with a fighting spirit. And since I didn’t want to die, I threw away any thoughts on how an S-rank monster couldn’t be defeated alone by one man.

It was an S-rank, spellcaster monster. Meaning he chanted spells before firing them, and though spellcasters, either a monster or a human, always had a lot of fire powers—which is why they were so strong—it was also their downfall.

In a normal case, a spellcaster wouldn’t be alone. They always fought in groups. Since their weakness was the amount of time it took to fire a spell, they were vulnerable in that frame of time. They would fight in groups that could protect them until they finished their chants.

However, this Lich King just so happened to be all alone, so if I could get some decent attacks in before it had the opportunity to chant its spells, I might actually have a chance at defeating it.
