Chapter 4

“Filyir, can you fly? If you can´t fly, then mommy can carr…”

Before Alefyr could finish her line, Filyir was already floating, being just a little bit above the wooden floor of the tree.

“Well, I guess this is to be expected…” Said Filyir with a slightly dejected tone.

“”I see, the wings alter the mana and shape it into a flow, making it easier to control. My element type is fire, which shouldn´t be very suitable to use for flight. But even so, I can control my balance very easily… It seems that the mana is being transformed into a variation of the same element. I should look into it later.””

“B-but it might still be difficult to fly, right? Yes, let mommy carry you~” cheerfully said Alefyr. However, when she went to hold Filyir, all she ended up catching was air.

Filyir had evaded to the side right at the last moment. It was as if flying was already a second nature to her.

“Flying, very easy.” Said Filyir with a rebuking expression on her face.

“Ah-ah, fine then…” Said Alefyr in an upset tone, giving up on her plan. After a few more seconds being depressed, she cheered up again. Flapping her wings, now her feet were also off the wooden floor. “Alright, let´s go.”

“Meeting, who?”

“We are meeting my friends, and after that, we are meeting our family! Fufufu, I can´t wait to see their faces after they see how my daughter is so cute and smart! They kept showing off their children right at my face before, but now they will see. Hehehe...” Alefyr said with a smug face. It was as if all the depression she was having moments ago was a farce.

Lifyir´s face slightly twitched when she heard Alefyr said that. However, she decided not to think too deeply about it. She had already given up on Alefyr.

“Follow me. If you have any problems flying, tell me, okay?”

Alefyr was making sure she wouldn´t fly too fast. Usually, fairies wouldn´t particularly go fast to begin with, so there wasn´t much difference in their speed compared with the other fairies. Of course, Filyir had confidence in being able to fly fast. Flying was one of the most basic things to learn for a cultivator; the only ones not capable of flying were the ones that only recently entered in their cultivation path. The method used for flying by the fairies was different from the ones used by the immortals of his previous world. However, with the received knowledge and natural instincts, she didn´t encounter any issues in flying.

The Sohyris greatforest was as vivid as always. The vast area, which included from the top of the trees to the ground, was filled with the liveliness of the fairies. Since she didn´t have the mental capacity of an immortal anymore, she couldn´t help but be slightly at loss at the colorful forest.

Although Lifyir had seen enormous and magnificent cities of major worlds that had a much deeper variety of things flooding one´s line of sight, she still couldn´t help but be slightly interested at the scenery. The vividness and colorfulness was also a new and different sight for her. Even if those same attributes could be applied to a few of the previously mentioned cities, the theme tones that colored the greatforest in particular would give a completely different ambience to the place.

Besides, she was seeing a miniature civilization from the perspective of a small creature, so it was bound to be a different experience.

At the time Filyir was running away from Alefyr, she caught some glimpses of it. Seeing the sight of the forest from the tree was already something astonishing, but it was also a very interesting experience now she was flying through it.

The two kept flying together for a few minutes. During their way, Filyir kept looking around, looking out for anything that would stand out. Filyir was still not completely sure how to act in regards of the fairy society, so she was looking around since she had the spare time anyway.

One of the things she was worried about was about the fairies relationship with the other races. The fairies were a weak race. The law of the stronger ruling over the weak should still be valid in this world. Although she had confidence that she could get stronger fast, she still would rather not have whole countries on her feet all the time during the time she is still vulnerable. As to be expected, there wasn´t information about their government procedures among the information she received on her blessing.

Even so, there was still some information on the fairies´ lifestyle. However, now seeing it with her own eyes made up a completely different story.

There was one thing that caught her eyes:

It was that most of the fairies were slacking.

The fairies would be playing around, chatting, or simply sleeping outside. In short, they were slacking.

“”Hmph, those that slack die.””

The fairies were free to do what they wished and would also help each other in times of need. Of course, due to their good nature, they wouldn´t wish harm to one another, so even conflicts would end with some discussion and laughs at the end.

Perhaps the fairies indeed led a good life due to that. But on the other hand, because of that, many chose to simply live their life slacking and playing around.

Once a fairy completely grew up, she wouldn´t grow old. In fact, fairies were said to have an almost infinite lifespan. Because of that, there was no way for Lifyir to tell the age of the fairies she would see around.

It wouldn´t be weird if some of them were fairies that had been slacking for hundreds of years before deciding to do something constructive.

In other words, the fairies were the ultimate slackers.

Despite being weak, they don´t put any effort. Such a race should have already been eaten by others and ceased to exist.

But even so, they still live and thrive.

“”The great fairy, right.””

The sole pillar of the fairy race. From the information she received from the blessing, Filyir knew there were other places inhabited by fairies, so it might not be weird if there were other fairies with considerable strength.

However, Filyir was almost completely sure that the great fairy was the one that was really preventing the fairies from going extinct or getting enslaved.

This was something Filyir should have in mind. Right now, the great fairy was her enemy after all.

“Filyir, we are here.” Right when Alefyr said that, she started fly down. Filyir followed after her.

There were descending to the ground. At the direction there were headed to was a building at the foot of a tree. It seemed it was made with that same soft material the bed was made of. Apparently, it wasn´t common for the fairies to make entrances at the top of their buildings, so they had to first land in front of the entrance in order to enter it.

The door was made from little branches and leaves just like the door from the room albeit put together more properly. Despite the similarity to the soft material, the floor they landed at was hard. Now that Filyir had a closer look at the door, she noticed there were parts the leaves were tied together with the branches by a thin line almost invisible to the eye, holding together the door.

Both entered the building. Inside was a room with many bookcases closing at the walls. Each of them had many books, and there were even some books lying on the ground. The air inside was stagnant and had a smell somewhat similar to what one would expect of an old library. If one was to ask about the difference, it would probably be due to the difference in the materials used.

The paper of the books were made with a very thin and somewhat transparent material that was carefully sewed in order to have it maintain a proper shape for the book. There were many different types of covers. Some were made with tree bark, others were made with thin stone slabs, and many others with different types of materials. The cover and the pages would be tied together, and then, the side of the book the holes the string would go through would be covered with a paper-like material. How they were able to make holes through the barks and stone slabs without damaging them showed their potential for precise craftsmanship.

Each book was almost half the height of an adult fairy. Although each page was very thin, the books would get a bit stuffy. This couldn´t be helped due to the actual size of the books.

In the corner of the room was a bed. The fairy lying on that bed was attentively reading one of the books. She had blue eyes and blonde hair. The fairy slowly turned her head to her visitors.

“Hello Rihafon!” Said Alefyr cheerfully.

“So it was yours the one that was blessed recently.” Said Rihafon with a flat tone of voice.

“Yes, look at how cute she is!”

“Yes.”

“Also, she is very intelligent, you know. She can already speak!”

“Ok.”

“Hmph, you kept showing off your daughter before… Now you will see, my daughter is really incredible, you know? Hmph.”

“Would you like to have her play together with Flalan?” Asked Rihafon, changing the topic of their conversation.

“Okay!” Said Filyir with a smile.

Rihafon then closed her eyes for a few seconds. After that, she said: “Alright, I contacted Callae. They are coming.”

“Tell her how my daughter is incredible too.” Said Alefyr, seemingly being overexcited for showing off her newly born daughter.

“Ok.”

Rihafon was about to go back to reading her book. But then, as if she remembered something, she turned her eyes to Alefyr once again.

“Ah yes, I forgot to ask her name.”

“It´s Filyir.” Said Alefyr with a smile.

“”Beautiful redness of a flame”, is it?”

“Uhh, I guess? Hehe.” Said Alefyr somewhat unsure. Then, she added. “Nalyn was making fun of me because of the name I chose. It´s just fine, isn´t? Isn´t it??”

“I see.”

“...” Alefyr looked at Rihafon with a sulky face.

“”It looks like she is really used to dealing with Alefyr.”” Filyir thought as she was listening to their conversation.

--------------------------------------

“Hello, my name is Flalan Voalanen. Nice to meet you.” A fairy slightly taller than Filyir self-introduced herself. She had violet eyes similar to Alefyr and blue hair. Her hair was tied in a ponytail behind her head.

“Filyir… Lailyiris.” Answered back Filyir, introducing herself as well.

Both were at another room inside the house. It was one of the rooms at the second floor. It seemed that it was her bedroom.

After Flalan arrived at the house together with Callae, Rihafon told Flalan and Filyir to go play together. Flalan brought Filyir to her room while the others remained at the room full of books at the entrance.

There was a bed at the corner and a bookshelf next to it. There was also a carpet and a light very similar to the one at the room Filyir was sleeping at before. Right now, they were sitting at the carpet next to each other.

“Filyir, Callae mama said that you can already speak. Can you read too?” Flalan asked, filled with anticipation.

In response, Filyir simply nodded.

“Oh.” Gasped Flalan with surprise in her face. “It took two months for me to learn how to read. They said it was very fast, but now it doesn´t seem so.”

Flalan made a slightly sad face, but then, it turned into a happy one soon after.

Flalan stood up and walked to the bookshelf. She immediately picked one book as if she already knew the position it was at. Then, carried it over to where Filyir was, holding it at her bosom. She sat down to the place she was sitting at before and handed Filyir the book.

“You should read this book. It is really good.” Said Flalan.

“Ok.”

“Let´s read it together.”

Instead of playing, the two little fairies were now reading a book together. The book was spread open at their laps, both sharing its weight. Because it was a picture book, the story wasn´t too long despite its length.

With the pretext of it being for practice, Flalan had Filyir read the first parts out loud. Because it would be suspicious if she already knew how to perfectly read, she would let Flalan help her sometimes. After some time, Flalan took up the role and was now reading the story for Filyir.

It was a story about a fairy that fell in love with a human. Although the human had accepted her love, they had to cope with their difference in sizes. They would travel around the world and meet many different people from various places, and they also adopted an abandoned child as their own along their journey.

Ultimately, they had to separate due to their different lifespan.

Apparently, that story was almost like an old tale for the fairies of Sohylis.

“If only humans lived longer… Then they could have been together for more time... Sniff*” Said Flalan with teary eyes. She had a sad expression.

“But… they still loved each other...” Said Flalan with longing in her eyes.

Flalan breathed out and rubbed her eyes. Then, she made a faint smile.

“The story is really good, isn´t it? But it is so sad… But it is romantic..” Said Flalan with one of her hands on her cheek.

“Sad…” Said Filyir while trying not to be too expressionless.

A few seconds of silent passed. It seemed Flalan was still affected about the story, slightly daydreaming about it.

Breaking the silence, Filyir asked:

“Only, read book?”

“Hm?” Flalan tilted her head to the side, wondering what Filyir meant.

“You. Only read book? Filyir asked again.

“Ah, now I understand” Flalan said while clapping her hands together.

After having seen so many fairies slacking along her way, it couldn´t be helped Filyir was somewhat surprised to see a hardworking fairy like Flalan.

Filyir was a bit curious about Flalan. Considering the slacking standards the fairies had, the amount of books there were in the house was astonishing. However, she didn´t expect a young fairy like Flalan to be reading all of them even if her caretaker would be.

“I play with my friends sometimes, but I spend most of my time studying.” Said Flalan while puffing up her chest with pride.

“Why?” Asked Filyir.

“Rihafon mama is super intelligent and knows about anything. I want to be just like her, you see.”

“Knows, anything?” Filyir asked. Even with the exaggerated claim, it still made her interested.

Filyir needed to know more about the world. The fairy called Rihafon could be a good source of information. Since Alefyr was friends with her, it would be easier for Filyir to ask her any questions later on.

“Yes, she does all sorts of experiments with magic! The great fairy even calls her from time to time to ask about what she found out. She also knows a lot about many histories of the world and tells me them sometimes.” Said Flalan with admiration. In response, Filyir simply nodded.

“”I might try asking her stories about the great fairy. Although it isn´t impossible that that blonde fairy is informed about me, I have the feeling her relationship with the great fairy isn´t deep to that point. Well, I will think more about it after I get to know her better.””

“I have another very good book I want to show you. Let´s read it together~” Said Flalan excitedly.

“Ok.”

“”I don´t really have much to do for now, so I guess I will start by befriending this fairy. I should be able to have better connections with that blonde fairy if I get the favor of her daughter. I still have no solution for the fire fairies being able to sense me, so for the time being I won´t really be able to train on my own anyway. Let´s just wait until they bring up the topic about it. Even slackers like those fairies should at least teach the basics to their children.””

And so, the two little fairies continued reading more stories at the room. Bit by bit, the two were becoming closer friends.
