Chapter 4

Chapter 4

As Eira tried to calm down, she heard two voices. “Do we have to go in?” one voice asked.

“Well, we need to go check if there is any food in there” The other voice replied.

“But isn't it barricaded?”

“Yeah, so?”

“Aren't the barricaded places already cleaned out?”

“Yes but this place doesn't have the marker.”

“Marker?”

“You know the mark we left back at that place two days ago… It's called a marker. You'll get used to it.”

“Okay, but this place was barricaded. What if something is in there?”

“What do you mean?”

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

“You know the other place that was barricaded? I heard it had half-eaten frozen corpses in there. I don't want to go in there.”

“You think there's corpses in there?”

“I don’t want to go in there.”

“But it's a diner. There'll be lots of food in there.”

“It's been two months since all this shit has happened, it's probably all rotting by now anyway. Besides, it's probably all cleaned out already. I’m pretty sure there was some dude who thought the same way as us and already took out all of the food.”

The two voices argued whether to go in or not for quite a while. Eira who was still sitting in the kitchen shielding herself from the cold. She was listening to their conversation contemplating whether it was safe or not. She tried to get up but her knees gave out. She tried to call out to them. But what came out was a small squeak. She tried again but her throat had dried out so much she couldt talk. When she finally managed to say something, she called out to them. There was no reply. Maybe they got surprised?, she thought. She called out again. No reply. Looks like they decided to not go in after all. She went up to the rooftop as fast as she could hoping they were still there. When she reached the rooftop she was met with just the blanket of snow with two sets of steps, coming and going.

She could not stay there any longer. Whoever her savior was, they were not coming back. She wondered what happened to them. Hopefully nothing bad. Not to mention, food was running out too. She decided it was time to leave. Eira headed out in her bright summer clothes toward home. Toward her mother.
