Chapter 11 In comes the third

Chapter 11

The night was brisk as the heat from the summer bled into the fall, the town was getting ready for bed from the long day’s work on adding to the wall and tearing down buildings. The construction on the entire town was going well but that it had just started so Patrick couldn’t say that it was going too well because enough time hadn’t passed yet. The council had talked on the construction matter along with the leaders in charge of it, it would take years to complete it the way they had invasion on the schematics they drew up. The first thing they planned to do was put a much larger wall in place that could take on the number of goblins they faced in the south along with weapons of war, they had failed to be completely ready and competent in defending. It was something the border warriors didn’t want to go through again.

Patrick was currently walking next to his two sons and wife. Lisa was there with Henry as they made their way to the south wall. Gwen hasn’t shown herself to the rest of town after the reset finding that her daughter Chance didn’t come back like the rest of them. No one knew how she got the final death while the rest of them went on, living in the nightmare.

Patrick and his wife were planning to put on a funeral for her but didn’t want to exclude the mother, or Jacob for that matter. Thinking of Jacob, Patrick looked over to his youngest son as he thought on the grandchild he lost. His son knew all along on who the father was but didn’t say anything to them, he never visited her while she was at the town hall. She was all alone except the small visits she got here and there.

He shook his head as they got near the southern barracks, the women’s to the left and the men’s on the right. His wife went to the door first as the group waited a ways away so not to spook Gwen if she answered the door. The guards were still posted up on the walls but it was laxed, the main focus of Waterbrook was to make a place they didn’t have to worry about attacks. If they couldn’t find a safe place then they would just make it, or at least that’s what Patrick thought.

The knocking on the barracks was audible to them as they waited, the seconds turned to minuets as there was no sign of Gwen. Finally, one of the guards on the wall spotted them, “She went out to the northern wall, none of us wanted to tell her no but we all know she’s hunting the man in chains. It just doesn’t feel right, to lose a child to the final death after their aging out of the protection of the System.” The female guard shook her head and went back to watching the southern border.

The town was shocked from the new of losing one of the younger members but it was short lived from the planning and preparations going on, it was better to forget these as they continued in their work. Patrick encouraged it but couldn’t help feel that he was making the rest of his family hurt worst from it. That’s why they were here now, taking the time to morn Chance.

“Let’s give her some space while she morns her daughter. Gwen doesn’t want to spend it crying here with us, I can respect that about her.” Jacob told the group as they walked back to the town. They planned to split up as soon as they reached the town, until the alarms went off warning the town folk of the killer being sighted in town.

Sara was currently looking at Zayne as she held on to the spear she used to kill her father with. The love she felt for him was unimaginable, something she has never felt before. I wonder if he minds if I hold on to his arm, Sara thought. She shifted closer to Zayne, reaching out to take ahold of the said arm. The motion was slow and she didn’t feel confident that he would let her.

“What is she doing? Is, is she reaching out for your arm?” Jiminy noticed it before Zayne did but by the time he looked down, it was already too late. Sara had latched onto the arm. He didn’t know why the women was doing something of the sort but he tried to shake her off, softly at first turning into a full wave of the appendage. Sara held on for dear life as Zayne shook with abandoned for her to let go but it was all for not. Sara was now glued to her victim.

“What do we do now? I think there was a cool spot over by the woods where we could lay down and maybe…enjoy each other’s company.” Sara had a hopeful smile on her lips as she said this, the idea of spending quality time with him was something she was looking forward to doing.

The skill of -lover’s intuition- was making it easy for her to read his thoughts, for the most part. The voices he had in his head was hard on her to read. Maybe if she leveled it up a bit she would be able to hear them again but that was for later, Sara was happy enough to have a strong silent man for a time.

Zayne was told to do two things from his Goddess, one- to take Sara to her town and let her see what ever she was supposed to see, two- have her around so she could watch him work. Now that Sara was done with home, he was back to doing what he did best, causing death and terror. Zayne didn’t shake Sara off his arm as he stepped into the mist disappearing from her view. He reappeared by her walking to the center of town hall where all of the children slept. He didn’t have a plan on what he was going to use them for but that’s why he had Jiminy and Foulness for.

“That is not what I’m used for damn it! I’m the voice of reason not the idea one where you use children as a weapon you psychopathic bastard. Take what I say to heart and stop this obsession you have with this town!” Jiminy screamed in Zayne’s head.

“Fuck that, I want to see you use Billy over there as a club on that farming fuck of a bastard.” Foulness chuckled. The idea he had was a lot better and more entertaining for him then what ever Jim would come up with.

Sara watched as the voices conversed in his head, taking the opportunity to watch his expressions as he made them after each voice talked. She had the inkling that Foulness was more of what Zayne liked compared to the other one, what was its name? Oh, right Jiminy. She needed to make him understand just how much she loved him. She would come up with something as they made their way into the hall, she had goddess knew how long with him. The idea of spending an eternity with Zayne made her wet from the anticipation of what they would do. Step one was getting that voice to like her, anyway possible.

Zayne stopped in front of the bed of a small kid, the name on the front of it read something, he tried to get his intelligence up but that wasn’t working so well. Sara saw that he was struggling to read the name plate on the bottom of the bed, “that says Reed, do you not know how to read? I can teach you some-”. She was cut off as Zayne made his move to the small kid.

He pulled the blanket off the bed and picked up the child by the leg. He wasn’t more then 8 or 9 and was light enough for him that he couldn’t tell he was holding onto something. As soon as he did so the kid went on the defensive and started to swing his arms out wildly, all while screaming. Sara seen the whole thing happen and couldn’t help but laugh into her hand as she tried to hold it in. The sight of the small child trying to fight Zayne was hysterical, most of the villagers couldn’t put up enough of a fight to slow him down.

Zayne didn’t seem to care what the small human thought as he walked out of now waking town hall. The gathered children all got to the side of the wall as soon as they heard the ruckus Zayne had started. They hugged the wall trying to put as much of a distance as possible to the walking nightmare in front of them. He simply walked out into the night, the town streetlamps were new to him as it illuminated the surrounding town. The sound of the sparkly light went up into the night air as he stood watching, Sara clung to the side of him as they watched it in fascination. Sara had never seen the sight before and was mesmerized by it. Zayne just like to watch the pretty colors as hit went up and up, exploding in the air with a big bang.

The gauds came rushing to him from the sound of the distant bells going off, the flair shot was something they used for a city breach. When they spotted him with sara on his arm, the guards tried to stop in their tracks before they ran right into him. Sara looked to the men as she turned away from the ending spectacle

“Put on a good show for me. I think I’m going to get a good seat on the roofs of a couple of houses.” She turned form the guards as she started to climb the town hall, making her way to the ideal spot to sit and watch as her love tears them apart

Patrick saw the flair go up before he heard the bells go off, “the town is being invaded. Jacob! Come with me. Jen and Henry, take shelter in the barracks. This shouldn’t take long like last time.” Patrick turn from the small group and started to jog his way back to town with Jacob on his heels.

Jenifer didn’t argue with him as she pulled Lisa into her arm as she started to talk about how she hasn’t had any dinner plans with her in a while.

Patrick was almost to town now, as he ran he called out behind him. “Go to the north, if you don’t see anyone on the wall then send another flair up so I know that is where he came from.” He made his way into the center of town where it was easier to get the details from still living people.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

When he rounded the last corner to the center he found men and women running in the opposite way screaming as they did so. He spotted a guard in the crown and head to him, hoping to get a little more information then just that he was spotted in the area. He got close to the pale guard, pulled him from his fleeing pace putting a stop before he could get away. Patrick turned the man around to face him, “What is going on? Where is he!” He shook the man as he voiced his concerns.

The man looked at Patrick as relief flood into him, “He’s that way” he pointed in the direction of the town hall. “But be careful, HE’S GOT A BABY!” the man ran away after that, taking great care to put as much of a distance as he could from the center of town.

Patrick understood immediately, the idea of that son of a bitch killing another child of someone was sickening. He worked himself up in a rage as the buff he got from Odin came to life in the corner of his vision. He dashed through everyone as he come to the first few dead bodies. The heads were all caved in, bloody footprints lead to the west of town as he kept going. The trial stopped at the wall, the sound of someone falling off caught his attention. Not slowing down, Patrick launched himself at the wall clearing over the structure as he landed heavily on the other side. The impact he caused shook around him as he searched for the killer, trying to put that skill tracking to use.

The hit smacked dead center in his back staggering him forward before he knew what had hit him. He spun reaching out for the offending thing that dared to attack him. The skill -Odin’s fury- was wonderful for the buff it placed on him but the longer he used it the more he was inclined to loose his cool. The ligament that he grabbed ahold of was the killer’s foot that was stained in blood.

“There you are you son of a bitch-” A killer’s size fist smashed his face as he looked for the man’s face. The blow sent him back into a stagger making him lose sight of the man in chains once again. The sound of mad laughter sounded out somewhere in the woods in front of Patrick.

The man in chains reappeared before him standing menacingly, he didn’t notice before but the man was taller then he was with a build slightly bigger than the last time he saw him. He was roughly 6ft 5in with the body that was acquainted with hard work. Being alone here with the bastard was something he didn’t think of as it dawned on him that he might not be able to take him on alone.

The laughter rang out again making Patrick look away trying to place the voice he heard. It was something he was familiar with but couldn’t place it. He quickly turned back to the killer as he felt the earth shift beneath him, the trembling in the ground was from the man making a lunged with his arm back readying for a powerful swing. The thing that came at him was something he wasn’t ready to take on.

The child who’s name escaped his memory came hurtling at him in an impossible speed, the sound he made was close to a wale as tears crested his eyes. The reason everyone was afraid of attacking the killer when he had a child was the simple fact that it was unethical. How could you stop a screaming child being used as a weapon with the block of a shield or sword. You couldn’t.

Patrick dove out of the way in a role, coming back up in a crouched position. He was ready to take on another swing but chains came instead ripping into his flesh as he was taken back to the dirt. The man didn’t ease up as he continued his assault on Patrick, the ground was soon pooled with his blood before he could think to pick himself back up. Why wasn’t his buff making him stronger then what this monster was? Did he grow stronger in the short span of time, no that couldn’t be. Patrick thought to himself, he quickly looked through his character sheet to see what was going on. He soon found it; the ability had a cool down time right beside it counting down from 23:14 hours left. He moved to the side as another attack came at him, taking the hit to his shoulder instead of his back. Patrick readied himself for more when a shout to his left brought him out of his self-berating as his son Jacob came running from the north wall. His sword was unsheathed and his tower shield was held in his off hand. On his back was something long and folded in clothe.

“Dad! I came as soon as I could. The towns people were shouting where you went, they pointed to the direction you were running off to. Here, you didn’t bring you spear.” He pulled off the long stick he had rapped up on his back. As the spear was flung, Jacob took up a guarded position in front of Patrick who quickly unwrapped the thing.

The spear was not the same he was used to using before, it was a long oaken branch straitened out to about 5 ft. It was stained bringing out the beauty of the wood, with leather wrapping that stretched out 3 ft. The blade at the end was black like obsidian, about as wide as his hand and just as long. The serrations on it were jagged to insure that whatever it punctured would pull flesh with it. The weapon was beyond anything he had seen the town black smith make so far.

Patrick turned back to his boy smiling as he held his new spear, he lowered it to his chest with the point aimed at the man with chains as he prepared himself once again for a bloody fight. The child was still in the killer’s hand as he ran forth bringing the spear to the man. His son side stepped to the left letting his father pass as he tried to get behind the killer, the spear missed him by a large margin but that wasn’t the point. Patrick continued to jab and swing with his spear as his son got in position lunging at the man’s leges making a sweeping attack with his blade. It nicked the man in chains calve as a small cut formed, Patrick gat a lucky hit piercing the killers shoulder making him drop the child and reach to pull out the spear.

More shouts sounded as the southern guards came into view of the fight taking place, they witnessed the assault Jacob and Patrick made encouraging them to run harder. A rage filled scream shook the group, as a figure came into view coming out of the western forest.

The women was slender, clothed in black garments that would have made Patrick and Jacob blush if it wasn’t for the fact that it looked very similar to the missing Sara from all those years ago. The features weren’t quite what they remembered, making them unsure if it was really her. She had a hateful expression on her face as she stared daggers at the both of them.

“You insolent fools! HOW dare you hurt my beloved; do you have any idea what you have done?” As soon as she was done with her little speech the guards surrounded her and the killer, taking up arms as Patrick tried to digest what he was seeing.

“Sara, is that you?” One of the men called stepping forward to her. It was one of Brocks cronies once upon a time, making memories flash back to Sara from her time being locked in the dark room with that mad Goddess. She fell to the ground holding her head in her hands as she sobbed, the man was Stephon who turned over a new leaf after the town was ran sacked. He reached out to her trying to help her up when she pushed him down, pining his arms under her legs as she stared into his eyes.

“AAaAaah!” Sara screamed out, racking her fingers over his face. She started to gouge out his eyes and anything that she could get ahold of. Ears, tongue, nose as it went on. The sound was wet, making a squelching noise as she made slow steady progress to inflict as much pain as she could. The men and women stood there in horror as they watched, Patrick broke through the standing guards as he tried to take the look alike Sara off of him. The killer moved faster knocking him off from his path and into the group around him, they fell all in a heap as the man in chains begun his steady stream of attacks. The chains raged against the leather they wore but was quickly shredding them apart, killing off the few unlucky ones to have been struck to the head. Patrick could hear garbled words from others, bringing him near the precipice of death.

Jacob staggered out of the group in a crawl, searching for the killer’s he used one of his skills to blind the two of them. The skill was called flash bang and it did just that, making a loud pop sound as the eyes around were assaulted by a bright flash. Patrick couldn’t see for a long moment, the higher one’s perception was the longer the effect lasted, of course that was if they had a low constitution but that hardly mattered. The killer and the mad Sara made a run for it to the north woods escaping Patrick once again.

Patrick set off heading in the same direction when Jacob talked him to the ground, the roll was harsh on him bruising his already pained back. “Their already gone! Leave it alone, they wont be back till tomorrow.” Jacob fought to keep ahold of him, pinning Patrick to the ground he began to rain blows on him. Patrick struggled for a moment longer than gave up laying face down in the dirt as his son continued to try and talk reason to him.

“We have already won, and we can do so again. We just need time and forethought in our strategy.”

The Goblin forces had recovered from the reset, falling back into place of fucking, killing and plundering in the woods. In the beginning, they were few in numbers. They started out with a little more than 20, but that number slowly grew as the years passed forming into the thousands. Kafue, the goblin shaman, had started out as one of the lower ranked in the echelons. That lasted about as long as the last goblin chief, a few days, when he came into contact with an undesirable. The town called him the man with chains, but to his people he was know as cloud walker the smoke breather. The stupider ones wanted to try and gain its powers by feeding on its flesh, that idea lasted for a few short hours when he and a small group went back into town to claim a few women. When they entered through the south, all they found was dead bodies littered all over the place.

The chief was with them when they went, he witness first hand of the atrocities he had committed and was shortly replaced by one of the smarter ones. That so happen to be him, the only shaman, Kafue. He went back with the group to make preparations to only focus on the town, but that came quicker than what he planned when the town came running into them and their caves.

He didn’t plan on meeting the humans right away and was sorely prepared to take on the group in a timely manner. So went the years as he and his race continued to swell in numbers getting ready to take the town, they had others pop up such as trolls and orcs, and with every new race there was always another challenger to his place as leader.

Now, he had one goal after the long years, to complete the quest in front of him.
