The journey to Belgrade, while brief was quiet, Adolf was not filled with the joy that usually he felt when running at a high speed through the plains of Wallachia, Argus is dead, killed no less by a human who seems to have the knowledge on how to kill monsters.
“Are you alright master?” one of the werewolves asked him, this one unlike Adolf was half transformed into his wolf form while running, it was an odd feeling, the feeling of superiority based on strength was something ingrained into the minds of werewolves, hence why he was called master, for Adolf did not have to transform or wait for the full moon to use his full powers.
“I am fine Marcus.” Adolf responded.
“Are you worried about leaving Maximus in charge of our castle?” Marcus asked.
“No, while being a blood crazed idiot with a short-sighted mentality…. Alright I am a bit worried, but I was thinking about the vampire hunter.”
“Do not worry master, he is a human, and even the strongest of humans cannot win against numbers.”
A group of half wolf minions murmured agreeingly.
“From my experience there are some people who fight better against a horde than in a single duel.” Adolf retorted, “But that’s not what I am thinking of, I am thinking of the status of power.”
“Well, you are now the strongest werewolf now that Argus is dead.”
“And it pleases me that I am, yet this vampire hunter was stronger, I was wondering if our power structure is of any use against this enemy.”
Marcus looked oddly at Adolf, he then said, “We have been living like this ever since werewolves existed, do not let Argus discourage you master, he fought alone, and therefore died a fool.”
Adolf gave a small smile, and continued running, now they are in Serbia and will be reaching Belgrade in a few minutes, whatever the vampire hunter or Felicia for that matter is planning, they will face it as a pact, and destroy it as a pact.
Felicia was collecting her forces in her castle when Adolf and his pack arrived.
“Uh! the dogs came.” Felicia exclaimed.
She went to put a fake smile on her face.
“Welcome to Belgrade, you’re early.”
“We pride ourselves with our speed, hence why our lord made us his messengers.” Adolf stood, his red beard glowing with the light of the oil lanterns, his pact behind him transformed back to their human forms.
“Felicia, I take it that you have made the preparations for the hunter?”
“I did, and you are the final piece.” Said Felicia, a sharp glare into her eye came as she felt insulted that this dog would question her authority, but it vanished as she continued.
“I require your speed. the humans will likely stage another uprising in hopes of distracting us from facing the vampire hunter.”
“Wait a minute!” one of the werewolves interrupted. “How did the humans know that the vampire hunter is coming?”
“Adolf. Please keep your servants in check.”
“Stand down Artemis.” Said Adolf. “we must not quarrel; our enemy is one.” He then turned to Felicia and said, “but he raises a good point, how did they know?”
“Before David died as you would know, he sent a message to us, unfortunately the vampire’s shout isn’t a private method of communication, as such the humans know, and as such, your role in this comes.”
“You wish for us to make sure that all the humans remain in their houses.”
“yes, Adolf. I have issued a warning to the cattle so that they don’t try to do anything stupid.”
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
“Why warn them?” Marcus interjected. “ They are merely cattle, are you going soft Felicia?”
“wouldn’t you want to have as much cattle as possible? There is no point in ruling a city with no food.”
“I expected that would fight against the vampire hunter, not babysit humans.” Adolf said with a hint of anger.
“Oh, don’t put your lovely beard in a twist Adolf, I will need some of your wolves for defense, but your job is as important, the vampire hunter may blend with the humans, so you could be the first to discover him, and remember! Don’t engage!!”
Adolf looked disappointed, but he nodded in agreement.
As he was choosing which members of his pact will go with him, Felicia leaned onto his ear.
“You know, if a human is found outside, you have my permission to take them as your pry. But do not overindulge, lest you lose your focus.”
Adolf gave an evil smile; human flesh is one of the greatest motivations of a werewolf’s life.
3 days have passed since then, the vampire hunter had yet to show his face, Adolf was pondering why would he take so long to come? Are humans this slow with their feet? Adolf built an image of a powerful human to be a hunter, a superhuman. Afterall, who could kill Argus with ease lest they be holders of feats greater than that of the cattle. Unless he got lucky, or perhaps he was just a normal human that can be easily destroyed.
These thoughts floated in the red bearded werewolf, as he was sitting on top of a roof in Belgrade, the past few days were uneventful, except for that one human man in day one who wanted to resist, his flesh was tough but delightful, or that young woman at day 2, who claimed to be buying food for her family, that was a great scam, giving her food, then following her to her family’s home and eating them all, and a great excuse to Felicia to inform her how she violated the curfew, Felicia never liked women, so the pack could get away with it.
“Adolf! A human is violating curfew!” A werewolf shouted at him, disrupting his thought process.
“Good. I was getting hungry.” Adolf jumped from the roof he was sitting on, he walked to the werewolf.
“Where is it?”
“On the ally, right between the red and brown houses to the south of here, there is a dead end there.”
“Hmmm, could be a trap, go inform whoever werewolf you find close by and tell them to come in case of an assist, or feast.”
He then turned to go. But stopped and looked back.
“Oh, and if the human turned out to be the vampire hunter, I would give a big howl, at that point, shout the signal and bring every able werewolf and vampire to our location.”
The werewolf nodded, he transformed and began running, Adolf did the same.
Adolf came across the human, his physic was that of a big human male. The human spotted the werewolf and started to run in a panic.
“This will be fun.” Adolf thought to himself.
He gave chase, as the human would take different turns trying to escape the werewolf, Adolf would corner him and drive him further into the dead end, running through houses and climbing wall until the human was cornered with the outer walls of the city behind his back.
“No! stay away!!” the human shouted. “Help! Anyone HELP!!!!”
Adolf gave a wide smile as he started approaching, “No one will help you human.” He laughed. “they are too afraid for their own right.”
Adolf came closer to the human, the smell enticing him, he will strike!
And then! A dagger flew from the human’s coat, it grazed Adolf’s cheek and caused him great pain; wait a minute! Great pain?! No normal dagger could do that!
He jumped away from the human, as he realized who he was.
“The vampire hunter!” He shouted, barely dodging the slash of a whip. Adolf gave a big howl, a howl that sounded like a wolf being tortured, he then turned to the hunter.
“You are the one who killed Argus!” Adolf snarled. “If I kill you, then I will prove myself the strongest werewolf in the world!”
Adolf bared his fangs as he dodged another whip slash, he jumped on top of the hunter and went for a claw dive. He missed! The hunter dodged and flung an axe onto the werewolf, who blocked it with his claws, breaking them into pieces.
Now Adolf had no chance but to use his fangs, he sped up and started running in circles making a whirlwind around the hunter who seemed to struggle keeping his footing, Adolf noticed that and sped up even further, causing the hunter to fly in the air.
Now was his chance! He leapt into the air and opened his mouth to end the vampire hunter, just then the hunter opened a small bottle of glass and dropped a purple liquid into the mouth of the werewolf, who coughed and coughed, before realizing what that liquid was.
“Poison!” he shouted, he fell to the floor trying to vomit the poison he ingested, only for the vampire hunter to wrap his whip around his hand, tying it to his neck.
As Adolf felt the Angel of Death closing by, he heard the sound of wolves and the screeching of bats closing by.
“You are too late vampire hunter.” Adolf laughed weakly. “I have called reinforcements, enough to deal with you once and for all. There is no escape!”
When the werewolf finished talking, the vampire hunter did something that caused the werewolf to feel a chill in his spine, fear that is not that of closing death. He smiled! The hunter with a creepy smile on his face leaned into the werewolf’s ear.
“That is exactly what I wanted, and it is why I tricked you to come here.”
Adolf realized too late, that he and everyone who faced the vampire hunter, that they are dealing with a terror beyond their capability, the terror of a man that does not fear death. Adolf succumbed to his fate and fell on the floor as his soul left his body.
Simon the vampire hunter, gave a moment of silence to the dead wolf, after which he walked to the wall and put his back to it.
“Let the bloodbath start.”
