Appendix: The Magics of Northworld - Psionics (non-story)

Psionics, or Concentration Magic, is the colloquial term used for one of the eight spheres of magic made available to some users of a Silvergate.

It uses a specific vital stat, Psionic, labeled as just “Psi” on the Interface. As with all magic, the stat is not visible until you obtain a Skill that uses it.

The classical view of a Psi is a caster that steps out of the fight to perform its miracles. Psionics mostly focuses on ongoing effects that require constant energy expenditure to sustain. As a trade-off, they tend to be quite spectacular.

Psionic Skills are typically associated with mental-stats like Fortitude, Intuition, Perception, and Reasoning. They are relatively rare in the lottery, and the effects are wildly varied, although almost always skewed into mental-related effects or body performance outside of stats. Psionic Skills affecting the world, like Kinetics, are rare.

Psi's specific “flavor” comes from their ongoing cost and the fact that two Psionic Skills cannot be sustained simultaneously. Activating a different Skill automatically cancels the previous one.

The vital formula has one of the lowest Level-dependent factors along with Arcana:

Vital cap = 500 + Intuition×3 + Perception×3 + Reasoning×3 + Fortitude + Level

It has a decent recovery, albeit not based on a stat one would expect:

Rate = (Strength / 10) per second

Any Skill or piece of gear that affects Strength will increase that rate, which is of great interest to Psionists, who are always starved for vitals. Unfortunately, Strength does not synergize with the rest of Psionics. There is still a specific Meditation skill that can be used to improve that significantly:

Meditation of Mind

Tier 4 Strength

Action

The mind’s strength is like any other strength. It is practiced.

Psionic energy recharges at an accelerated rate while you are meditating. You gain a bonus to your Psi skills for a short time. Meditation is interrupted if you move or take an action.

Maximum meditation period: (skill) sec

Cooldown: (600×0.99skill) sec

Psi recovery: (skill/10) per second

Bonus skill: +1.01skill to all Psi skills for (skill×1.01skill) sec

Other, more generic Meditations also greatly increase your regeneration rates for Psi energy, but all Meditation skills are incredibly rare (see “Fanduk”).

Typical Psionic skills:

Bend Metal (tier 5 Fortitude): spoons to pretzels.

Left-Hand Rule (tier 4 Intuition): map indoor locations

Psychic Reading (tier 3 Perception): detects Skill use and magical vitals’ changes in advance. Yes, in advance, at least for creatures.

Ignore Pain (tier 2 Fortitude): suppress all debuff effects, can target others.

Mind Over Matter (tier 1 Reasoning): open holes in walls.

Special section on Locational Interference – Project Cartographers Eyes-Only

This section contains only highly speculative information and is not considered accurate. It is intended to serve as a discussion board for Cartographers involved in the Build Map project, not as a reference.

Vantegaard note: I haven’t yet found the slightest hint of Psionic locational interference. Following is a list of locations that might be of interest, all of them temple/monastery-style areas, mostly dungeons. It is a long shot.

Vantegaard note #2: Justification for the monastery search – over half of the 2+ Psionics builds from Gaters I’ve found online also feature multiple unarmed (“monk”) combat skills. Check for those, too.

The Four Shrines – Four small church-like structures located adjacent to the recent town of Maaaan, low-rank area, East Gamma Sector. Note: get access to the forums devoted to the area? The Guild does not have any access I can find.

Decayed Pagoda – Oriental-style terraced ruins, empty but in a rank 50-60 area, West Gamma Sector.

The Snake Abode – Temple of Doom-style dungeon, ranks 60, Alpha Sector. It has a known standard leyline ending there; it will be checked ASAP.

Volcano Sacrifice Point – Half-circle theater, whose back opens straight into an active caldera, with a raised stone dais and broken chain links, rank 80 area, Alpha Sector. Also candidate for checking for Rituals.
