The stone tipped spear had been sharpened to a deadly point. The one holding it guided the other two dirty men in loincloths as quietly stalked through the woods in bare feet. All three of them had long matted hair with twigs and dead leaves tangled here and there. In the fading light of evening, they slowly encircled their prey. One spear. One bow. One bola.
The deer was grazing on a patch of grass when they approached. One of the men spun his bola in the air. The animal’s head went up with sudden fear. Just as its white tail signaled ‘danger,’ the bola wrapped around its hind legs. The beast tried to run but a stone-tipped arrow pierced its flank. Kicking wildly on the ground, the last hunter charged in and planted his spear in the deer’s chest. All three roared and hooted victoriously.
The rest of the evening was spent building a fire, bleeding the kill, and cooking meat. The three hunters grunted while they tore into their feast and slept under animal skins around the fire. Stars shone brightly in the dark sky between the trees as the last one closed his eyes.
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
When the morning came, all three woke and folded their blankets, placing them by the big oak tree they always had. Underneath, they placed their weapons. With everything stored, they walked down a forest trail for miles before they found it. Just off the trail, up in a tree, was a camping shower.
One by one, each of the hunters stood naked under the large ten-gallon plastic bladder and showered off. Next to the tree were three duffle bags. Each taking their own respective towel from their bag, they dried, tied their long hair up, and began dressing. The spearman pulled on his suit pants, the bowman his jeans, and the bola thrower his basketball shorts. Fully dressed, they smiled and carried their bags out of the forest.
Clearing the trees, the path led to an open field with three SUVs. The three hunters shake hands and pat each other on the back. Together they agreed that they needed this. It had been good to get away. They should do this again soon. The spearman climbed into his Escalade. The bowman unlocked his Explorer. The bola thrower tossed his bag in the back of his Wrangler. Together they drove off, excited to come back next weekend and do it all again.
