Chapter 14

THE SUN WAS RISING AND THE RED MUSTANG was on the third of ten miles distance to the Canadian border. Troy was still kneeling on the front seat, looking back. He then checked on Laura whose face was down in the backseat, and he instructed her to stay down at all times. She looked up —still worried and, the maternal ilk in her probed out...

"Troy, is Reeves coming?"

"Don't worry, they will come, Laura."

Joe drove along a stretch of hills with icecaps — the roads were slippery but the red-haired Intersexual was in total control — his fooling around making doughnuts in the Mojave Desert back then, gave him the expert confidence on the steering wheel.

He was limpid in mind of his role in their escape mission — after the final-instructions given last by Reeves hours ago — which was to race to the border on the dangerous landscape — this was his second chance, and he could not let Reeves and the others down just as how he once surrendered himself in defeat, like when he was at the Wesleyan wall — when he too had the opportunity to escape a long time ago.

Troy noticed three fast, assault buggies were coming half-mile away behind them — he alerted Joe to step on it...

One of the buggies had the Commando Piccirilli on the wheels, she was driving solo. The next buggy behind had Corporal Hilly — standing in as the gunner.

They too were making good speed on the icy terrain.

***

True Bob was accelerating his buggy from afar behind — and he noticed that Reeves was stirring back to consciousness with his both palms clenching on his chest. He was worn to a shadow, after the torture at the base. Reeves opened his eyes, and he was breathing hard...

"You okay Reeves?" He nodded back — and Bob comforted him in gaiety...

"Hang on there, buddy — we are going to Canada!"

***

The Bell flew over the hills and Roberta hung out the passenger’s holding to strain to look into the field-glass — gazing at the three Army buggies that were in hot pursuit after the red car that was ahead, taking sharp turns in a winding frosty road. The army buggies then opened fire, when they closed in...

Piccirilli was using the remote-controlled gunner-mode, on her steering wheel to shoot. Corporal Hilly was triggering manually while standing behind the M240 machine gun mounted on the buggy's rear. Joe drove along the curves, with Troy firing both his machine guns at the nearing enemies’ vehicles — more hot shells continued to spit into the backseat floor, where a terrified Laura crouched and prayed.

***

True Bob was coming from the back and had caught up with the first army vehicle — it was the slowest — bulky Mowag Shark tank, with road tires.

Captain Farrer was looking out from the rooftop hatch — she used to be an invict gunner while in the Iraq War, decades ago.

True Bob felt it would be futile to shoot on automatic at a heavily armoured tank, from the control on his steering-wheels — so he overtook it — but kept away from its minatory turret range.

There was also a Hummer ahead, with Royle in it — Bob chased it instead.

Roberta peered down from the chopper at the gun-battle ahead — in the sinuous roads, with the Army buggies responding to the rebel attacks in the fleeting Mustang. Roberta looked for Reeves in the car, but instead, she discovered a dark-haired female lying still, face down on the backseat.

She exclaimed. "Laura!"

Fear now grew inside Roberta’s guts that her sister was being ‘in the state of coma’ — and she was transported in the rebel's Mustang to the Canadian border...

Now, she would likely to be killed in the crossfire shooting, with the Army buggies that were rapidly closing in.

***

True Bob was trailing fifty yards behind the Hummer in the winding section of the road, with hills on his right-side — and steep ravines on its left. Reeves turned over to see the Mowag tank, getting left behind, but still keeping up in pace...

He felt the need to do something. He unbuckled the seat belt — Reeves crawled to the rear. True Bob was now concerned of his buddy’s injuries...

"Hey get back here, where are you going? I got this You stay put and rest — I got this! "

Reeves ignored and was manning as the gunner, in the rear of the assault buggy. True Bob drove close to the side of the Hummer and Reeves fired the side — it created hollowed dents but did not penetrate the bullet-proofed mass. Reeves then recalled in the moment of how the Preacher had single-handedly defeated one of these Humvees, back in Tombscradle...

Now, he next figured out ways to equal that feat...

Captain Farrer was puzzled on why an army patrol buggy was attacking one of her Humvee. She looked into her field-glass and spotted Reeves on the gun.

“Good Lord, the fag bastard had escaped from the FBI custody!"

She ordered the coordination for the tank's turret — and the trajectory zeroed into the renegade terrain buggy moving ahead. True Bob noticed the menacing Mowag's turret’s movement in the rearview mirror — he stepped on the peddle to speed up, and approached closer distance to the Humvee — it startled Sargent Royle looking out of the bullet-proofed window, she screamed out...

"Fuck! It’s the rebel, Reeves Jensen!"

The Humvee tried to run the buggy off the road, into the dropping ravine — but True Bob hit the gas hard, overtook and the buggy got ahead of the armoured car. Captain Farrer was cursing now — she could not get a clear shot at the escaping rebels.

Reeves and the chasing Hummer now opened fire, at each other.

The signboard stated —'5 Miles to Canada.’

Joe reached the halfway mark — and he was still accelerating. Troy reloaded both his AK47s when he heard Joe beside him, exclaiming out aloud...

"What the fuck!!?"

Troy was startled to discover cars and caravans that were heading on the other side of the road.

“Damn those fucking Canadian tourists!"

Piccirilli caught up and fired on automatic-mode, hitting the slowing Mustang’s trunk from the rear...

The Mowag's cannon turret was raised skywards — and Farrer fired the shell that lobbed and dropped to devastate the path ahead of the rebel’s buggy — creating a small, shallow crater on the road, and Bob dexterously avoided it...

"Is that senile Farrer crazy?" Sargent Royle too was fuming, at her superior’s attack from the Mowag — and the pursuing Hummer also eluded the crater — but True Bob sped away in the winding roads...

Joe zigzagged onto the Canadian caravan convoy.

The fretful Roberta from the chopper saw an Army buggy shooting at one of the minivans in the caravan, which was in their way. It exploded — but the uncontrollable military buggy on the glacial road crashed head-on into the eruption...

Piccirilli and Hilly detected their third Army buggy was in flames ahead of them, spinning irrepressibly on the icy road and a Canadian car next crashed onto it — and the human torch Army driver and gunner were thrown in midair. A pileup occurred ensued, but the other two army buggies managed to manoeuvre past — they continued the pursuit after Joe’s Mustang.

Roberta observed the burning vehicles below on the winding roads, from the chopper. She was glad —that Laura was away from the danger in the fleeing Mustang GT.

Reeves fired at the bulletproofed windshield of the Hummer with the M240 in his rear...

The vehicle was impenetrable. Something caught his attention from True Bob's sling bag — Reeves reached and grabbed a C4. True Bob looked ahead at the burning Canadian convoy from a mile beyond. Reeves’ tapping on his arm which jolted him — seeing the C4 in his buddy’s hand...

"Where did this come from?" Reeves asked.

Bob replied back that he only managed to let off three of the charges at the army base earlier.

Reeves calibrated the timer to five seconds, before tossing it towards the shooting Hummer coming from their rear. The bomb smacked the tarmac and bounced on the road...

...00:02 — 00:01 — 00:00...

The Hummer drove over it and the explosion rocked from below the vehicle — throwing the three-ton metal heap in midair before it rolled, and skidded sideways on the icy road — stopping still in the middle of the road.

Reeves and True Bob were laughing, and they both rejoiced...

"I wish I had some more of that now!" Bob said back.

Reeves knew what he meant after sighting the Mowag ramming into the fallen Humvee — to clear it out of its path. The pissed-off Farrer was determined to get Reeves, for killing most of her best soldiers...

The turret cannon was pointing at the rebel’s fleeing buggy...

At the US Immigration, the night shift border officers and a US Army sergeant were looking into their binoculars, at the fiery action along the winding roads by the hillside just three miles ahead. The Army sergeant’s troops were armed to their teeth, with grenade launchers and machine guns, to anticipate the oncoming insurgents.

True Bob was passing into the area of the burning Canadian tourists’ vehicles pileup — he spotted half a mile ahead were the two other terrain military buggies chasing the red Mustang. He stepped on it and got closer — Reeves fired at them. Piccirilli and Corporal Hilly noticed that they were attacked from the rear...

Hilly turned her gun at Reeve's buggy — both were trying to outshoot the other out. Roberta from above spied on her glasses, on why two Army buggies were shooting at each other.

Her eyes bulged out in rage — to discover Reeves as the gunner.

“Fuck, there you are!”

At a bend, Reeves blasted Hilly with direct shots, and she was cut into half. The flipping army’s buggy rammed the railing and was thrown off down the precipice cliff — plunging down hundreds of feet into the ravine beneath.

One of Troy's rifles was empty, and he dropped it and used his last remaining round — firing just around the corner at Commando Piccalillis’ solo chasing vehicle. Piccirilli who was on auto with the M240 — in trigger-happy firing mode during the entire chase — before she too ran out of ammo.

Troy took a few direct shots and killed Piccirilli with bullets hitting her face and chest...

The chopper flew above. Roberta peered into the field-glass to see the rebels had defeated the two hunting Army buggies. She yelled instructions to the pilot...

"Take me low — I want to shoot those dogs!"

The chopper approached Reeve's buggy...

True Bob accelerated — as he did not know what to anticipate from the aerial strafing attack. Roberta blasted her pistol — bullets pierced directly onto the buggy's hood...

Reeves peered up and detected the hounding Roberta — he trained the mounted gun barrel and fired above. Bullets punctured the lower section of the FBI’s whirlybird —and the pilot pulled away, fearing hits on the rotor. Roberta nearly fell off from the passenger holding door, but she secured her grip back to her safely...

The super-cop then fired the entire clip — till her pistol was empty. She screamed out in frustration and threw the pistol out at the escaping rebels.

The oncoming vehicles — were less than two miles away from the US Immigration.

The Army soldiers were laying spikes on the ground to deflate the rebel's approaching vehicles tires — the orders were to shoot to kill them all...

Troy checked his rifle, and he sensed that he was running low on bullets — and noticed an Army patrol buggy was picking up speed at their tail. He then caught the odd sight of someone, waving a white cloth frantically from the pursuing buggy...

"Holy mother of God! Laura, look over there — look, it is Reeves!"

Laura finally turtle-necked after lying low during the entire ordeal — squinted over the bullet-holes ridden Mustang trunk, and she saw her son — everyone laughed in delight from both the vehicles, which was just half a mile apart.

True Bob detected some problem — smoke was coming out of the buggy’s hood after Roberta’s gunshot hits earlier. The vehicle was also losing speed, he cried to his partner behind him...

"Reeves, we got problems!"

Reeves saw the smoke and turned back to notice that the Mowag tank, was also nearing from behind, catching up fast, in full speed...

Joe started slowing down to Troy's instruction — when he too saw the smoking buggy's hood, in the rearview mirror...

"No! Go! Go!"

Reeves yelled out to the Mustang — he didn’t want them to stop — because of the tank that was advancing fast from the rear...

"Push on, Bob, we can make it!"

The cranking Mustang too picked up speed again — and Laura noticed the buggy, with Reeves and True Bob was gradually left behind...

“Troy, they are in trouble! Stop the car!" she cried out...

The FBI helicopter hovered over the US Immigration checkpoint — and the confused officers and the Army soldiers gathered beneath to peer at it. Roberta was sitting beside the pilot, and she spoke from the chopper’s speaker to those enforcers, who marshalled the sector below...

“THIS IS THE FBI. THERE IS A CIVILIAN VEHICLE APPROACHING, WITH THE GOD’S ARMY REBELS IN IT. DO NOT SHOOT AT THEM, THEY HAVE GOT A HOSTAGE — I REPEAT — DO NOT SHOOT, THEY HAVE GOT A HOSTAGE!

“LET THEM PASS THROUGH. THE REBELS WOULD BE APPREHENDED ONCE THEY GET INTO THE CANADIAN BORDER. LET THEM PASS-THROUGH — DO NOT SHOOT AT THEM!"

Roberta turned next to the pilot...

“Now fly over into the Canadian Immigration!"

The pilot refused — saying that she is not authorized to cross borders. Roberta grabbed the pilot's uniform collar, making a striking fist with her other hand, and barked out...

"Do it, bitch! That’s an order!"

Roberta knew that the rebels would get more hostile if aggressive attempts were made to take them down in US soil — during their end-game bid to run and escape...

Canada was considered a better neutral ground option — to lay her trap to extract her hostage sister.
